Has anyone else done much with using an airbrush to paint and weather vehicles? These are some of my first attempts with an airbrush, and while it's a bit of a different look, I like it.

These have a something of a camo green undercoat, shaded first with highly thinned smoke ink, then black, with the details painted in later once the hulls had been airbrushed.

There are lots more pictures in the gallery:

There was a Devilfish or Hammerhead thread about that topic. But I think it was a year ago or more. But pretty good paint job. I do not think they need any weather effect.

Well they don't need weathering but for nurgle they are remarkably clean.
Very nice

They are a touch clean for nurgle, but beautiful paintjob all the same. Very nice color choice, and tentacles are fun and high contrast ftw.

The painting is superb. I have to echo the "a bit clean for nurgle" coments though. The purple is a great contrast! I'm a big fan of green primarily with small purple details.

Very nice. A unique look. While it may be a tad clean for nurgle I think it works. Just because Nurgle is who he is and most people disease up everything Nurgle doesn't mean you should feel shoe horned into making everything in your army look like somebody took a dump on them and wiped their nose on them.

Yeah, as people have said, the cleanliness of the models is somewhat uncharacteristic, but they have a clear Nurgle look to them, and for what they are, they're fantastic.

I wouldn't change them at all. Nice job, I hope my airbrushing turns out something like that for my Thousand Sons vehicles.

Im not going to echo what everyone else has said, but as for weathering with an air brush, depending on the effect that you are looking for, it could be simple and difficult at the same time. Alot of vehicles in the military that Iv come across, tend to have weathered marks on them in the obvious places. But lets say you were wanting to do a sandy tank look, a tank that has been through alot of sand that is, which obviously is seen alot here in Iraq. Hold the tank with the bottom facing you, get your airbrush and in little spirts, spray the bottom faces of the tanks body (like the front part, the rear ect), because those are the parts that are always being hit by sand when its driving, other parts may get hit everyonce in a while, but crew members moving around alot on common areas of the tank, and the wind blowing the sand off, keep those areas fairly sand free. If I can find a picture, Ill show you.

Where ever I am...

Oh, and as for rust marks and chipped paint on the "metal" parts of the tank, those dozer blades would be chipped to hell around the edges, and above the teeth (obviously cause the move terrain out of the way so to speak). The bottom parts of the side armor would also be chipped and scratched, and now using an airbrush for weathered effects is difficult, and to me would be only be used in large areas where exposed metal (chipped paint). Brushes to me are the best for weathering, do to the brissles giving it a scrathed look along the chipped area. Does that help at all?

Guess my question is, can you do this with regular models? Like infantry, Space marines?

I know the feeling, I had one sitting around for years before I ever really tried to use it for anything more than undercoating full models. It definitely takes some practice to master a new tool, but on the plus side, many of the underlying principles carry over from standard painting, so it's not as much of a learning curve as starting from scratch.

Thanks. These were requested to be a cleaner look than what's typical for Nurgle, something that's been rotting in the warp for closer to 10 years than 10000.

Stelek wrote:Guess my question is, can you do this with regular models? Like infantry, Space marines?

That's what I plan to find out. I'm still getting the hang of airbrushing, but so far, I can use one to do most of the undercoating of the colors on an infantry model, I can get maintain pretty good control down to about a thick pencil line size. I've already used it to shade some Warjacks, Soon I'll be trying this kind of shading on an infantry model. Here is what I got with a Khador Juggernaut.

I'd love to know what kinds of paints you are using. Airbrush-specific paints, or are you thinning your own down?

If you're thinning your own down, any pointers? I have an impossible time getting ratios and mixtures right.

Actually, while I'm asking, what kind of airbrush and tip? I have an.. Aztec, I think? I hardly ever get to play with it, but with results like these I'm reconsidering.

And lastly; for something like the juggernaut, do you airbrush the parts before assembly? I have a hard time figuring out how you'd control the spray so as not to get it on unintended parts of the model.

Beautiful (if cleen) looking models.

The airbrush is a device I'd love to learn but haven't seen the point of investing in it without knowing more about paints, consistency and having a heap of vehicles to use it on.

Well I have like...20 armies unpainted but ready to go.

Since I really hate painting, I'd love to airbrush and maybe dip--so do tell, what exactly do you use?

Beautiful painting there. I recieved an airbrush 2 Christmases ago, but have yet to crack 'er out and try it on some models.

I'd love a chance to sit down with an experienced user and get some intstruction.

Live in the maritimes by any chance? I know you said you were new to the airbrush, but those look damn good to me!

Mostly thinned Vallejo colors, though I've been meaning to try some airbrush specific paint, or possibly just get some extra bottles to keep pre-thinned paint in standard colors handy.

The standard advice is that you want to thin the paint to the consistency of milk, but it seems the natural tendency is to not thin it enough. For standard colors, I was thinning at least 4/5-1 with future floorwax, which is really mostly just a glossy acrylic medium. It will make things really shiny, but a good coat of airbrushed dullcote at the end will take that right off.

The juggernaut was fully assembled, and I don't think I'd want to try it in parts. The airbrush puts on a very thin coat, and until it's been sealed, it can come off easily if you brush against it. Once you get the hang of controlling your airbrush, you should be able to maintain a spray area as fine as a thick pencil line, which is quite a bit more than needed for a larger model like that.

This isn't exactly what I'm using, but it's another knockoff of the same type mine is a copy of, and was the closest I could quickly find.

The air control at your fingertips was a big help, particularly when I was first starting and completely unsure of what characteristics and different effects you get with different pressures.

I've been avoiding this thread like the plague.
One of my buddies commissioned these pieces as Christmas gifts. One was for me, another for himself and the third was for the guy I mentioned in "Painter"s 2 other threads (the krieg & Leman Russ threads).

As I've finally received my gift, I can dig into this thread and chime in.

If you look at the first picture of the squadron together, mine is on your far right and the guy who commissioned them kept the one on the far left, giving the middle to our other friend.

Okay...

...these are just cool.

I have to say that they ARE extrememly clean and not slimey or anything but, as has been said, that is what my friend requested. He's not fond of "over the top" Nurgle.

The colors are just awesome together. It's very neat & very clean, but it really does look nice. It's more of a "traitor" Nurgle tank than a full-blown Nurgle tank. LOL Kindo of like they're only part way there (as he said, 10 years vs 10,000).

Plus, what you DON'T see very well in those pics, is the dozer blade on mine. As there's no three-quarters view, you don't see it well, but there are tusks/teeth that are growing out of the bottom of the dozer blade at an upward curve.

They're very nice pieces and we were all tempted to just go and start gaming immediately.

Unfortunately, this was a "family" event and our 3 wives wouldn't have been too fond of the idea. Our kids wouldn't have even noticed, though. LOL
