So I am getting a Hive Tyrant sort of near completion. A bit of greenstuff and a lot of paint left to go, but mostly I want a bit of feedback on the wings.
The wings are sort of a shady attempt, given the parts and not entirely complete - and not painted more than a base.
Basically I have never liked the idea of the fragile looking wings most have, so this took a while to work out. As I see it, if the wing of the Hive Tyrant hits a tank, it should hurt. . . the tank.
Leathery wings are fine on little guys, but everything about a Hive Tyrant should be dangerous. Especially one built for melee. Most winged MC however, make me instantly think "Shoot there, use a blast - or a template if possible, and cripple the thing".
This was my attempt to avoid that.
I am planning on adding a bit to the sharp edges of the wings and paint them really bright for "psyker energies". Covers the ubiquitous Warp Field as well as backing its innately high armor value.

this is a deffinate deviation from the norn...do they use psychic feild emenations to fly, is there a force field generated by the armored fingers. if there is a field generated you might sonsider some really wild, bright paint where the field is coming from so its easier to conceptualize. i just posted my flyrant same time as you did. i like the rippersyou have posted up on the base. i thought about making some little winged rippers to have under the belly on mine, but too much work for me right now. once you get this beast complete, lets see some finished pics.

yeah, doing something more to avoid the 'lots of scything talons' look would be good. The fact that they look tough and dangerous is great, but they don't look espcially like they'd help the creature fly.
How about adding a greenstuff membrane between the three wing 'ribs', or even an armoured-looking wing membrane from plasticard, if you want to emphasise the armoured look
Or if you want a 'flying via psychic field' look, add something (lots of teeny spikes or gland-like swellings maybe) to the talons to make them look less talon-ish

I am getting around to the greenstuff this weekend-ish. I am pretty certain that I shall use the "psyker-flight" idea. As to how exactly I will pull that off. . .
shrug. We shall see.
This idea was one of the stranger ones I had for my Tyranids. Still not certain how it will work out. But covering the mass'o'talon look is priority.
(I am pretty sure I will not model a ripper with a cowboy hat riding on a carnifex any more so this may be the wierdest now)

Hm. Some clear insectoid wings coming off the spiky ribs might be kind of nice if you change your mind about the psyker-flight idea.

I would move the bottom, smaller set to the middle, and put warrior talons on for the third set then. Would create a distinct line of extension as you move outward on the arm.

I hope you can take the wings off or else you would have problems ith the GS. What you can do is making some coral like struktures with the GS and fit in the gaps a transparent foil.

I, perhaps, should post another pic of the wings. They are remade talons, but are all attached to one "limb" not attached seperately.
So in essense folks think that the gaps need filled? I rather liked the discreet segments, but I would like it to be readily apparent what I was aiming for. I was thinking some extentions to the individual pieces - mostly to cover/hide the obvious talon usage - but was planning on making the three talons per wing seperate.
I shall have to think on it more.
Thank you all for the feedback!

When I looked at the pic, I was sitting there wondering "So...where are the wings?" It definitely needs something there.

Ditto ^
What about adding wire "arcing" between the talons, so it looks some what like it's charged with psychic power?
You'll have to paint them in progessive blues or some other bright color though.

For the wing piece movement - I agree.
However, it was my original intent to make the "wingtip" between the top and second spine. GS to psuedo-extend the wingspan. I rather like the arcing energy idea and may have to try to find a way to detail it. I think wires are too much but some filiment or another may be appropriate. Maybe just GS.
Moving the pieces is possible, if annoying, but better done now than later. The smaller talons looked . . . well, too small when I put this together the first couple of times - I did try it. But perhaps this method did not work out as well as I had hoped and I should move back to it. And bright blues were exactly what I had in mind.
Thanks again, I definitely want to make sure the wings look like wings once they are complete, even if oddly built ones.
