So, I'm headed to a friend's place right after work for a campaign game. I have my 2000 pt IG army tucked away in the back of my jeep. I have the top up, parked under a tree, windows open... but, it's gonna be 98 degrees today.. I'm kinda worried, remember the good ole days when I was a kid and the heat from a hot car would warp records and tapes so you couldn't play em anymore.

just wondering, anyone ever have a really bad heat wave mess up your models?

The only damage I ever encountered from leaving figs in the car was the bases warped. It didn't damage the models, but I think that was because they were metal. The models were in a case but, sitting in my car seat.

I've since, at a minimum get them out of direct sunlight (IE trunk). You should be ok with what you describe (assuming they stay out of direct sunlight)

I wouldn't risk it, If the heat doesn't get them then thieves might.

not really worried about thieves, pretty safe area.. when it's nice out I park with the top down all day and all. Plus my boss's office overlooks the parking lot and he's an ex-israeli military Zohan guy, so if he sees anyone sneaking around the parking lot he'll go Chuck Norris on em.

A guy here, in CNY where it doesn't even get that bad, had his entire tau army melt in the case during a 'heat wave' of the mid 90's. His case was probably in direct sunlight to cause that kind of damage though.

I've seen some bad heat damage to IG tanks. Although afterwards they do make great wrecked vehicle terrain.

I strongly advise against it.

I had a whirlwind's armor start busting apart and curling in my car because of heat on a summer day and all the super glue joints became really brittle and a lot of my army fell apart. I will never leave models out in heat ever again.

hrm... well, it's too late now.. guess all I can do is hope and pray. if they do get messed up it'll be more inventive for me to start that traitor guard army :p I'm hoping the shade and open windows will help, hopefully this will be the first and only time I ever have to do this though...

By mid 90's, you mean "after october 2001", since that is when the Tau first came out? Or did you mean, mid 90's as in the temperature?

Temperature. That's as hot as it can get here, and it melted models once - is my point.

I doubt there are any thieves out there breaking into cars and taking miniatures, but I like to keep them out of sight anyhow because I think it is quite possible someone might steal them thinking it was a pistol case.

It stays around the 90's F/ 30's C pretty much all summer around here it seems, so I don't like to keep painted miniatures in the car. I have never had a miniature melt, nor heard of such, but I did keep my old IG army in the car, and over time either the paint or varnish yellowed. I don't know if it was related to the heat, but I havent had the same thing occur with my Eldar, which I make a point of taking out of the vehicle.

It just isnt that much trouble for me to take them out, and I can't imagine heat, and surely not direct sunlight, could be good for the models.

The inside of a car in the direct sun gets a lot hotter than 30 C as we all know who have experienced it.

Even in the UK, it gets hot enough to kill a dog or small child.

I'd be careful, the local GW store melted a land raider crusader with the lights from their display case!

I have not had any models melt but I have had warped plastic bases on a few models. I try not to leave my models in the car unless its during travel time.

I had about 150 RT guardsmen in the back seat of my car when I first started playing. After a game we stopped off at the bar for a drink. Well... three hours later (it was a big beer) all those little plastic IG were now members of my buddies squat army. The really funny part was the rough rider horses had become ponies. Granted, I live in Wyoming and it gets about 110F during the summer and I left the windows up. No direct sunlight, just baked those little suckers. I really wouldn't risk it. I never leave minis in the car any more.

Wyoming, yeah, the big square state out west. No, that one's Colorado... just above... yeah right there, the one with Yellowstone. No, we're not Montana.

I warped up a resin plasma gun from an old armoourcast warhound once. My stupidity, and I paid for it. A little boiling water later, however, and it was fine.

That's what I though, but it was weird reading it the first time! Another reason to dip, as the polyurethane protects everything, and smells funny when hot!

well I got lucky, my army survived up until I started playing, then they got wiped out by plague marines.

Nothing warped or melted or anything. Not gonna risk that again though.

Kind of a pain though, the only way I can get a game in after work is to go right after work, if I stop at home first it'll be like 8pm before I get anywhere for a game :(

This might be a little late, but a friend of mine had his army in his truck. It was a little over 1500pts of empire that was totally and irreparably damaged.

I also game after work, and I always leave my army in my car. However, I leave it in the trunk (no direct sunlight), and I park in the shade. I've never had anything take damage, and the daytime temperature just yesterday was around 100 degrees F. My figs are mostly metal, but I do have plastic falcons, and those have been fine too.

Yeah, My army was in my trunk during a hundred degree day here in NC on Friday and my army was fine, though the figures were noticeably warm when I started playing.

ive never had models melt, but like someone already said, the heat messes with the super glue for some reason and makes it break easily.

i have however seen a winged tyrant and 2 fexes (3rd Ed nids) fly down a flight of stairs. the result was not pretty.

I would warn you to not leave them in the car.. Years ago I got called into work and
left my models in the car because I was working over night and would be off by 10:00am
When I got home I had a ton of warped bases and a number of vehicles melted.

Now I have a junk yard terrain peice...

Also had a case stolen out the back seat of my two door car... That means
they where looking for something to steal because there is no way you could have
seen the case just walking by.

yeah I was worried about my stuff all day. Got lucky I guess. Plus for the theft thing a jeep is too easy but luckily my boss watches the lot like a hawk and the office is in a decent area. I usually do my best to not game after work just because of time and the fact that I have to drive far to get to where we'd be playing. I'm a weekend warrior, but this was a special occasion since it was a campaign game we needed to get done

my friend had his guard army in his trunk one summer day. One Russ completely exploded. Another looks like a balloon inflated inside of it. Everything warped and swelled. It became my looted russ. It really looks the part. THe troops themselves were fine.

Lost miserably, wiped out by the end of turn 4

my guard vs his plague marines, lots of cover for him to get cover saves from just about everything I took to kill his armor saves :( I softened him up real good but as soon as he got in assault range it was over, and of course he could sweep into each unit after wiping out one.. at least that won't happen again with the new rules

gonna do a rematch for the fun of it, bringing a lot of HQ heavy weapon teams next time

I am thinking, if you can't take your case into work with you, why not get a big cooler at Wal Mart, put the case in there, and then put it in the trunk? Maybe throw in some ice and a few drinks if there is room, to keep them cold

Now there is some thinking outside of the box.

Getting a big cooler, filling the bottom with ice and packing the mini cases on top of the ice should indeed mitigate the risks of heat.

Nice suggestion.
