Well since alot of other people are doing it I will too I suppose, just looking for some feedback on the model, these should be bigger pics then the ones I used. I think my photography really holds me back, I tried making a light box and it hasnt worked out too well, so any comments on that would be helpful too. Also what photo editing program do you guys use. Thanks to everyone who voted for me and thanks for the feedback.(also these pics havent been edited at all so...)

I would recommend taking the pic outside, not in direct sunlight. Alos have the camera on a stable surface/platform and use macro if the camera is capable. Take a look at my Grave Guard Standard in this forum.

A close up on the model, and sharper detail. I mean, there's a lot of space with nothing around, and the detail seems blurry more because of the pic than anything else - a shame because he looks like he is well painted!

Also, the colours aren't very good, you probably used a normal bulb where you should have used the blue ones. These produce a "whiter" type of light that makes colours look like they should.

If you can, maybe you can post pics with just body shots of the mini, I'd really like to see it closer.

Agreed on the two guys above. There was a good post on making a light tent before, I'll see if I can dig it up.

Apart from the photography, he looks as if he is well painted. He looks like the old 'Eavy Metal style painting of the 90's which is rare these days. Good work!

I saw this in the competition and I was REALLY disappointed.
If it's as good as I suspect it is, you could have had a heck of a shot.

Unfortunately, your photographs just held you back.

Whenever photographing minis, you should be far closer and use the camera's Macro function. If you don't have access to "real" light easily, you can use "Reveal" style bulbs. IMO, they are the best. It's all I photograph my minis with. A light box would be nice... but I've never used one, myself and -while my pics aren't PROFESSIONAL- I've never suffered for it.

I'd love to see some closer images to see what this bad boy really looks like.

Thanks for your kind words and the comments, here are some photos I took tonight, before I was using the zoom on the camera and it made it blurry when I got too close so I just moved the camera closer for bigger pictures, even though it seems to make some of the faults on the model come out alot more, things I didnt really notice when looking at it in real light, anyways without further ado.

Again comments are greatly appreciated, especially constructive critiscm. I probably needed to use less white on certain parts of the grey and the end of the plasma pistol needs to be touched up, plus maybe another highlight on the gold.
As for the bone, generally what I do is start with a layer of scorched brown I leave that in the deepest recesses and then cover the rest with beastial brown, I use a mix of bleached bone to beastial brown starting with about 2-1 bone-brown and work it lighter from there until its about 5-1 bone-brown then hit it with a layer of straight bone, I was with brown ink, highlight with one more layer of bleached and then a 50-50 mix of skull white-bleached bone, Ill wash it again and re-highlight if I feel its too bright or Ill leave it like that, kinda depends on the model. Hope this helped. I will be posting some more pics of other models probably tommorrow so check back for that and let me know what you think.
Thanks again

Good work on a classic wolf mini. It's my favorite wolf fig even though it's size is a bit off next to the modern marine figs.

Couple of quick observations to improve him:
- drill the barrel open, really improves the look of the plasma gun
- Get some symbols on the knee and shoulder pads, the plain yellow is asking for something in black
- Fix the skull on the back pack, its really odd looking in the middle of good bone
- NMM gold could use some stronger highlights and the placement of highlights is on some places little off

On the whole the fig is painted to a good standard, the fur and leather are both done good. To win in a contest such as this you just need to get good pics, and it's a good way to get mini in winning condition to take shot such as the last couple and fix the mistakes which show in those.

I like it good job.

May I suggest going to Wal-Mart you can pick up a light box there for about $35. it has two lights;a tripod for your camera; and the box itself with two backgroung screens. even comes in its own portable carry case. I love mine but I just dont have room to set it up anymore.

happy painting

I would've voted for you with those pics.

The skull in the very center of his chestpiece looks like it's just white.

It doesn't look like the handle of the weapon is highlighted either.

I second Metsuri's thought about drilling out the barrel of the plasma pistol...really helps.

I play

I will magnetize (now doing LED as well) your models for you, send me a DM!

Thanks again for the kind words, youre right the 2 skulls you mentioned are not great they were kind to last minute so was the weapon handle, didnt have time to highlight it, though I should have made time, sane with the symbols on the knee and shoulder pads, i was drawing up some space wolf designs but im not a very good freehander and it didnt turn out the way I wanted, alas no transfers so I left it blank, I will be posting a new eldar ranger that Im finishing up later tonight or tommorrow so please take a look at that and lemme know what you think.

Wolves are a good group to practice free hand as the symbols can be simple, but fitting in them. Just push yourself to new territories in painting as the experience makes you better and gives you new ideas for future. Also when you succeed in something you thought to be hard the confidence boost is something not to be down played.

Hey Grandmaster,

How about posting how you spent those 30 seconds in Photoshop to improve the image? I think that would be helpful for everyone.

First i cropped it down, remember for the web you can crop it down as the files don't need to be big.

This can be good if you can't get in closer.

I then used the grey dropper in curves to make the WB better (this is not the best way but at this stage its all i can do)

Then i selected the model with the magnetic lasso tool feathered it by 5 and inverted it. Then i used the white dropper in curves white out the background.

Job done.

I would do it differently if i was taking it this is what i did on the one above!

Hope it helps
