I have been playing the Dawn of War RTS for several years now. Early this year I started reading more into story of 40k and decided to start collecting minis. Chaos and Orks were my favorite armies in the RTS. So here I am with a ton Chaos minis, in various stages of construction. About half of my figs are recent SM converts to chaos I am new to whole operation : making, painting and basing so any suggestions or feedback would be great. Enjoy the pics

I would say wash the metal areas with badab black wash. Because you used black as a main color that is difficult to wash. Maybe try a dark grey next time and give it several coats of black wash. Then you should have a black marine with highlights in an easy way...

If you want to know why I say wash the metal take a look at this thread of mine:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/218010.page

The metal on the various orks is chainmail (I think you used that too) and a wash of badab black... (While you are there you can even leave a comment )

Nice job otherwise...

Its not the biggest thing in the world, but a base is always nice, are you going for a city fighting theme? Some fine ballast painted black would be a good start. Then dry brushing two or three colors would do the trick. If you can dig up some back issues of White Dwarf at your hobby store, there are plenty of articles about bases...

Oh and it looks like nice clean work with the metalics, keep up the good work!

Agreed, the clean-ness of some of your detail makes this a good first effort. I have a feeling that the models painted toward the end of this project will be superior to those at the end; you seem to have the steady hand for it.

One suggestion I might make is to put your camera in macro mode for photography (usually it's a toggle between a symbol that looks like a flower and a symbol that looks like a mountain or something.)

Welcome to the spiky, better version of marines! I painted this well after, oh, five years in, so I think you're way ahead of the game

Like Cory85 and Brian P say, the work is sharp and clean. With great foundation work like that, you can take these guys in any direction you want.

My best suggestion is that you visit a local Games Workshop store for some painting ideas (if one is available). You're already ahead of the curve, but sitting there watching some of these simple tricks that painters use to bring out the detail is really fun and will save you A LOT of time. If GW isn't available, inquire at other hobby stores too.

Forgive me if you know this already, but I suggest some highlighting and shading. I would start with a pot of GW Badab Black wash and apply to the silver on your Terminator. Once those crevasses fade into darkness and the silver pops even more, it will really complement the good work you've already put in.

For the black areas, there are many different ways to highlight, but the most basic is drybrushing. It consists of dipping the end of an old brush in the paint pot and then wiping most of the color off onto a paper towel. Then brush against the model's edges, and the color will come off onto the raised edges. With the proper color choice, this will make a nice highlight effect. So for black, you can drybrush with a dark grey a few times, then come back for one more shorter drybrush of grey.

The only downside of drybrushing is that it tends to give a weathered look, though this can be avoided by restrained application and a follow up wash afterwards.

There are a bunch of articles on Dakka that can better help with these techniques too. Keep up the great work and post the progress!

I have been inspired by some sweet conversions/customs on this site. I decided to try one on for size. This is a WIP, C&C are welcome.
I add a storm bolter, havoc launcher, Smoke and Comm bits to turret. I pintle mounted a stubber and storm bolter. I am thinking of add some mini sponson either to the turret or sides with some Hbolters or Hflamers. I am going to run some side armor over the treads, I am not sure what I am going to use for this though.
This is for fun, though I was thinking of using as something in between a super heavy and heavy. New to the game, feeling things out.

With the infantry you could drybrush there hair to make a better effect and posibly add a bit more detail, otherwise good job.

Cool Tank man, would advise for side armour skirts to cover the tracks. This would make an awsome predator.

The tank i quite bigger then a predator, Its as long as a baneblade, but shorter and thinner. I think GW's vehicles are undersized. Ironically Titans are oversized... but no gun is to big
I was planning on some plasticard side skirts with some custom side turrets with Hbolters.

Here is an update on my army..... I have allot still to work on. I am looking into some more customization on the 3 tanks. I have a rhino and a vindicator that I haven't built yet.
I am not sure on the second weapon for the leopard or the merkava. I think that I will stick the 2lascannons on the merkava and possible making up another 2lascannons/dual Hbolter from some spare IG HW teams. With my semester in full swing not sure how much will get done between now and December...... No more building for me until I have this army painted/based.

I am working on some modifications to my Chaos army. I was orignally going to do a Black legion army. A friend showed me an older Chaos codex with models painted up grey wolves, with the red corsairs look. So I am now slow starting to paint up models in several SM chapter colors and going to link them together with red for a Red corsairs force. I am working on a grey wolves SM squad, its a mix of AOBR and CSM models and a Ultramarines terminator squad. I should have a little more time to some painting. The Goal is to have this CSM squad done in a week or two.

I like it. I see a lot of people starting out painting, and not sticking to a central color theme in the army. I can tell from the overhead shots of the army that you stuck with one scheme. I think it looks clean and neat, and I like the conversion ideas.

I'll let more experienced painters tell you about washes and whatnot. I like what I see so far.

unfortunatley, it has been stated in cannon that no marine from the 1rst company of the ultra-nots has gone traitor...but that has no effect on how YOU want YOUR army, so paint how you want to. great mini's btw. i'd suggest making use of a guard army (to be traitor guard) to use those converted tanks.

I collect:

Grand alliance death (whole alliance)

Stormcast eternals

Slaves to Darkness - currently Nurgle but may expand to undivided.

forgot to mention. i would reccomend a matte varnish can (krylon - 2-3 bucks at wally world) to keep your mini's safe from the ravages of paint chipping.

It's me again, I finally got around to painting up my CSM squad and Termy squad. I like how they came out, I even got them based with medium-fine sand mix. I am working on squads in dark angles green, Catachan green and shadow grey. These squads will have to wait till finals are over in 2 weeks. Enjoy the pics.

Give everything a wash or two of badab black!
It will give some much needed shading, pull the different components of the models together, hide some mistakes and generally enhanse the look of your models 100%!

Nice work so far! Keep at it -- painting definitely improves with time and practice.

I'd echo others on the suggestion you apply washes (thinned paint) to your colors. GW's washes are actually quite good. Brush on an even coat, and let the wash seep into the crevices, nooks, and crannies of the model. This brings out details.

Also, it looks as though you're painting with pretty thick paints. Many people thin their paints with water (bringing it down to the consistency of milk, roughly), and paint multiple coats (since that first coat won't cover a surface uniformly, if thinned). The process is more time-consuming, but it prevents the paint from gunking up the details on models.

But most of all, keep painting, keep experimenting with technique!

You may want to pick up the GW "how to paint miniatures" book. Its chalk full of helpful sugestions. Unlike the realm of battle board, it is worth the price.

Thanks guys!
I plan on picking up a pot or 2 of the black wash this weekend. I am slowing painting up 3X10 man squads in other colors ( catachan green, dark angles green and shadow grey.) The rest of my models will just get red shoulders, gauntlets etc to tie them into my red corsairs. Once the marines are done then its onto the vehicles! A friend loaned me that book, thanks for tip!

I noticed you're having some trouble painting the eyes. I've learned to paint them first, and then you can touch up where you over painted with the original base color. Looking great though, I haven't seen a whole lot of well painted BL armies on here.
