This would be cool except I've been virtually getting a 50% discount by ordering online from the US. $40 for a Tactical Squad? They're $32 in the US and then add in a 20% discount.

Quick summary:
Codices are down $5.
Most things over $45/50 are down $10.
Battleforces are $105 from $130! Nice.
Ork Boyz are $25 down from $35. Much more reasonable.
Ditto SM Scouts, $23 down from $35. Assault marines $30 down from $40.
Chimeras are $40 down from $50.
That little boxes of snap fits is $10 down from $16.
All in all, good changes until our next price increase! haha.
Even the good old tac squad is down $40 from $45. All the tanks including Land Speeders are down $10.

That is why it is called gc-minis. It was only worth going to the States when the dollar was low.

What he said.
I ordered my Necron army from Chaosorc and Ebay and ended up paying half of what I would even after these price drops.
Even with a 2 week shipping time (the longest something took to get to me from EBay) it was worth it.

Okay, let's do some arithmetic. I could spend money on a Tactical squad from the Warstore, going at 20% off the listed $35. That's $28 with the discount, ignoring shipping.
I could also spend money on a Tactical squad from Great Canadian Miniatures, going at 30% off the listed $40. That's also $28, ignoring shipping. But wait, there's more. There's tax, say 13% for Ontario. Now it's up to $31.64. Now let's adjust that price by the current (29/09/2008) exchange rate (1 CAD = 0.954520 USD), lowering the price in American dollars to $30.20.
So now I'm only paying a premium of $2~ when I buy at Great Canadian Miniatures, compared to yesterday when I would have paid a premium of $6~.
The $4~ in 'savings' is nice, but I'd rather put the $2~ I'd actually save towards shipping from the US, because, for reasons unknown to me, I tend to get stuff from Neil within a week or two. The Warstore wins on both pricing and prompt service.

So now we're just waiting for GWOZ to get their act together and lower prices to suit, otherwise we'll remain as the one branch of GW that pays significantly more for the same thing.

Have you ever actually done this? #1 gc-minis is in BC, there is no PST. #2 there is custom (which includes tax) on the Warstore.

Yes, I've ordered from both companies. Somehow I've managed not to get charged with custom fees at the border, and I've always been charged the going rate for Ontario PST/GST by Great Canadian Miniatures.

That was a quick response. I was going to say further that the privilege of USD has a % as well. Much better with gc-minis, especially after the price drop and especially for larger orders. I only ordered one time from Neal, I ordered mostly PP stuff and it was when the CAN was > the USD. Came out about even.

@Nurglitch: If Canadian customs did things properly, you'd probably be looking at $20 in fees.
Also, if Canada and Ontario are at all like the US, *technically*, you're supposed to pay "use" tax on the imported stuff if tax wasn't collected by the seller...

Maybe that's true. I'm just saying that I haven't been charged custom fees. I've heard that this might be because, if you label the goods as 'toys' or something, toys are somehow exempt.
Perhaps results may vary, but my experience has been that it is cheaper to order from US and my conclusion based on that experience that this 'price-drop' will not change my buying habits.

@Nurglitch: There's a myth that, if you label something as a "gift", you wont' be charged customs. That may be true, but if you get caught, you can go to jail for mail fraud.
Once upon a time, when the Canadian dollar was discounted by 30% or more relative to the Dollar, buying Canadian made good sense.
Nowadays, if the difference is small (<5%), I'll prefer to order locally.
Anyhow, my main point was, from a proper accounting standpoint, it should be cheaper to order in-country.

Yeah, that's why I'm not presenting my explanation for why I haven't been charged custom fees as fact. I'm not sure why, but it means that, from the perspective of paying less for the same product (as well as receiving it much quicker), I order from the US.

True story.
The guy who sits next to me at work bought 3 armies online and used the gift trick everytime. Never payed a dollar in customs duties. Me? First time I try it - $45 in extra fees and a letter warning me that I what I did was illegal.
I'll shop North of the border when possible. If you ever do get hit with extra fees, it obliterates any savings you might have gotten.

This is what I have discovered about canadian duties and GW stuff from US or UK sellers. If the seller puts the word "Models" or something similar on the green custom slip that is put on the package, then you will be charged duty. If the seller puts the word "Toys" on the slip, then you will not be charged duty. That way, the seller is happy about filling out a truthful custom form (unlike if you ask them to put the word "Gift" on it), and you are happy to not pay a custom duty. I think the reason why this works is that toys from the US or Uk are not charged duties (but I may be mistaken)

Yeah, I always label on customs forms as "toys" and give the actual value - it's honest and proper. I don't recall having an issue so far.
But guessing the mind of customs? That's not possible.

sorry, sorry, the troll got on my laptop when I wasn't looking....
Also, yay price drops! Now I'm glad I hummed and hawed on my mechanized guard army, you'd think I'd be glad to know I'll save 90 bucks on chimeras, except I'll be spending 360 on them so even then. Assuming I buy them at GW prices. Which I won't. (Sorry FLGS, but you already have so much of my money...)

The reason for the drop is really because GW has merged its Canadian and US operations in an attempt to reduce overhead. To what degree I'm unsure, but pricing and marketing are all under the same roof is what I've heard. Its nice of them to spin it as an improvement of services and all but its rather transparent why they did it.
Nurglitch wrote:Okay, what with the Canadian dollar tanking, it is now worth it to buy from Great Canadian Miniatures.
If its any comfort its not really the Canadian dollar tanking, its the same economic forces that really hit the US in the early summer that brought our dollar down. That force has finally caught up and is working its way through the worlds economy. The US has a suck-tastic summer and now the rest of the world will have an equally suck-tastic autumn as things generally return to equilibrium.
