I just got my new Drop pods. Looks like a really nice model, we'll see once I get it together. I have seen a couple people mention the capacity of 12 and the harnesses for 10. It is a shame they did not make this a 6 sided model with 6 doors. One reason is so that they could justify the 2 extra passengers. More importantly is because I don't see any reasonable way that this is going to be converted to a Dreadnought drop pod. If it had six sides it wouldn't be hard to modify every other vertical section having three supports instead of six and having double wide hatches.

My guess is they had this designed before they changed the capacities in the codex.

It'll be interesting to see how people convert it, that's for sure.

Besides, if Dr. Strangelove has taught us anything, it's that real heroes ride the drop pods right on in!

How does this make the design..."flawed"?

I think they'd stand up in the rafters holding on yelling "HURR HURR! WE'RE MARINES!" to bolster their morale. Of course they don't really need it though.

12 marines fit in it exactly how 10 marine models would fit in a Rhino... Duh....

Maybe the extra marines are tied on the outside.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Ok, I got it together, is anyone else having problems getting the hatches to stay shut? They all have a full range of motion but there is enough stress that 2-3 of mine tend to pop off their seating surface.

I knew someone would mention 10 marines in a rhino...

The design "flaw" is a matter of opinion. It took me about 10 minutes to think of a better way to do it, too bad they didn't think about it 10 more minutes, we have only been waiting about a decade.

There are some assembly issues as well in the order that you put things together. They can all be overcome with a little pushing and bending. I followed the guide on the GWUS website. You definitely should plan to do your first one all in one sitting before your plastic cement fully sets. I would strongly discourage anyone from trying to do this with super glue, not sure why anyone would but if you tried I think it would be a nightmare as you have much less flexibility.

My one went together fine .. doors stay nice and snugly shut. Harnesses are damn fiddly though, and I didn't realise I'd put one of the interior divider sections in the wrong way round until the glue had almost dried.

It seems fairly sturdy once assembled, too. Overall, quite happy with it. I'll see tomorrow if the second one is just as user-friendly ...

On the topic of harnesses, how to they actually get out of those. It seems like the harnesses would be raised. I was thinking that they were supposed to rotate forward and the space marine could duck under but there isn't even enough room for that. There is a good chance I will start doing them without the harnesses.

Other than the harnesses the whole thing seems very durable. I like the touch where there are recessed areas for the space marine backpack to fit into and that the weapon actually moves.

Fixed the hatch shutting problem. I found a little flash that I missed on the hatches near the hinge that was preventing them from staying closed. If anyone else has a similar problem I can show you where to look.

10 Marines fit in a Rhino just fine. There's even a diagram in IA2 showing not only how they sit/stand(2 in each seat, 2 by each side door, 3 up the middle, sergeant next to the driver), but also how they deploy out of it.

I am sure it was. If we can get 12 in a drop pod I wonder why we can't get 12 in a rhino.

I think you rolled a for sarcasm...

My thought is the design on them is flawed because you actually can't toss them at the table for that extra bit of effect.

You can actually.....

I heard that the reason for the 12 seats was added late in the development process after the pod was done....
But to add extra seats/doors etc... would increase the size of the kit by at least one sprue... which would raise the price abit (erm...alot) as right now it all fits on one of the "large" sprues that they can cast

So £18 for a drop pod- i kinda prefer that to the £25+ I'd expect if they expanded it that way.

Oh, come on. It's a nice model.

If you need some sort of justification for it, just say that the two extra marines were already on the ground, in hiding, near where the pod landed, and were the ones that called in for support.

Alternatively, convert two marines to be riding the outside strangelove-style.

Or field squads of 10, if it really bothers you that much.

I think if you want to complain about something, look at the new Thunderfire Cannon. I'd call just about everything in that box a design flaw. I've been trying to get the pieces of this thing to fit together for almost a day now.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

The model is easy to defend.

It was designed from the STC so there is a limit to what modification you can do, especially with anything where aerodynamics are involved.

It was designed to hold ten men, the marines found they could hold twelve by adding, in all likelihood belts to the central column.

It likely cannot fit any more in most likely not from space but weight restrictions. After all there are five sections of the pod, if you can squeeze an extra marine in two, you coul squeeze an extra marine in all five.

Just because there is a logical workthrough, doesnt mean that GW have bothered to work one out.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Yeah I was working on that one also. At first I was thinking it was a bad cast but after I went to the trouble of filling in the gaps I found that most of them get covered by other bits. It still seems a bit rickety. I hate metal.

The drop pod model's been in development quite a while, longer than the 5th ed marine codex. The decision to make pods 12 men came long after the point of no return for the drop pod manufacture.

Let me get this right.
We have been wanting/waiting for a Droppod model for a long time (not as long as a new Ork Codex or plastic Waveserpent or plastic Sisters or....anyway) and now all we can do is whine about the flawed carrying-capacity-design?

Sheesh.

A note on the Thunderfire cannon, local blackshirt (Disclaimer: this is in Canada, check with your own red/blackshirts for final confirmation) said they acknowledge there's a casting problem in the fiirst run of them, and if we've gotten one that ligitimately does not fit together without a whole mess of greenstuff they won't have any problems in replacing it for us.

Yes, though whining is a bit loaded. More like informed critique from looking at the model. The only 'whine' on this thread has been the guy who whined 'sheesh'.

In all honesty GW have had a long while to get it right, so why not get it right?
