Hey nerds,

I used to play chaos back in 4th ed, specifically Iron Warriors (i know, i know....I can hear your brain scream CHEESE already). I kinda want to give them a try, however since i now have to remove a few Oblits and my Basilisk, I need to paint up some troops and such. Now, im no Michealangelo, but when i put my mind to painting my models can come out kinda-okay. However, i gots one little gripe that id like some advice on. The yellow 'warning' stripes that they sport, usually on their weapons and hearaldry, how would you guys paint them? I tend to use Bad Moon Yellow and kinda freehad it, but they usually end up coming out gakky. Any Advice?

PS I attached some pics so you can see what I mean.

It's because you're painting a colour which is bright over a dark undercoat. Hence a lot of paint is needed giving a 'gacky' appearance. Ive seen the same thing on about a thousand black templar shoulder pads.

+ get some masking tape, put it on your shirtt or something then pull it off so it becomes a bit less sticky with all the fur then put it on your model, paint over that then pull it off, perfect stripes. You can cut the tape to the size you want.

whatwhat is right in that painting light over dark is a surefire way to get a headache. It sounds ridiculous but what you need to do is build up colors.

Something i've recently tried with some success is painting elf flesh, then using yellow ink over that. Or just elf flesh then your choice of yellow over it.

Yellow is definatly a pain any way you swing it. Just experiment with different kinds of layering and putting down multiple coats. Good luck!

I've had great luck using GW's foundation line. I would try painting the piece yellow first and then adding black stripes over it. Black will always cover up nicely and you'll only need the one coat. Hope that helps!

Not done a lot with the foundation paints yet, but I always had good look painting white over black, and then painting whatever (red in my case) over top of that. The white seems to go over black very well.

I've always had the best luck with yellow if painted over a tan base color. White can work, but I just find tan is much easier. And definitely do the yellow first, and paint the black afterwards.

I also highly prefer to spray it if possible.

Thanks to all, the advice really helped.

Ifurita, I liked the mini painters tape idea. Dont know why i didnt think of that ahead of time

As far as painting over black base coat, i find that, not only does it save time and aggravation with the shoulder pads (Im rather ham-handed, lots of touch ups = not a good time) But the boltgun metal i paint the bodies isnt as shiny or jumpy when it dries. (I learned the hard way from painting Word Bearers....they kept coming out looking like World eaters.)

Again, thanks all, hopefully Ill post some pics soon when alls complete! (planning on using this army instead of my Orkses cuz i wont get them up in time.)

i think you need to learn how to paint a straight line, that would help.

use masking tape to keep a straight edge.
you will need to do alot of thin coats over a dark base colour.

just so you know, you should probablly not call everyone a nerd in your post. as I would call you a dick.

other then the fact my Chapter hates your's with a passion these should help.

use masking tape, put down a foundation yellow or grey wichever. go over that with the final coat of yellow. that'll help keep your colors bright.

go over your bronz's with another coat so its cleaner, with the silver go over it with Bad Abb black wash to help bring out the detatils.

Thanks for the tip, wash-away

And for clarification, the title of 'nerd' isn't so much an insult as it is a mutual sign of respect, as I consider myself a nerd. (Im also a dick, too, so pick your poisons, i guess)
