Go orks.

Different painting style, different gaming style, and models are really cheap thanks to AOBR and so much of the range is now plastic...

If you want a chance to learn new painting styles, I'd go Eldar. You can get away with anything from blending to checkerboards on them. Something I started but never finished (I decided to stop collecting Eldar) was to do Swooping Hawks with lightning bolts on the wings. The one I did came out really cool, and it'd be awesome to see a whole squad. Just an idea to get you started...

I said orks because I think they'd be harder to paint, with all their skin, which I find hard to paint.

go eldar, they are a great painting challange, harliquines, aspect warriors and have alt of symbols and clothes to paint, plus have a wraithlord!!!!

I think they would be better to paint, but thats IMHO

"I salute you! For though our path has been long and bloody, you have served our lord with unflinching courage and the honour of true warriors. We have seen many fall today and must remember, even as we die, that our blood to is welcome..."

It depends on which would be harder for you. Either could be difficult, depending on how much detail you put into it.
I said Orks because they're so dang fun to play.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, "If you don't laugh, at least once, while playing an Ork Horde, you're doing something wrong."

I've got both, along with marines and necrons, and love painting my eldar more than any other army. There's a lot of diversity and like others have stated, you get to use many techniques. It allows you to develop a consistent style why not getting bogged down by painting a horde of models that are all pretty much the same. Gotta love that.

Orks on the other hand are really very fun to convert since there's little restrictions on what you can or can't do. The painting tends to be a bit more tiresome and there can be a lack of diversity in your palette if you don't mix things up yourself. Try doing clans for some variety - one mob of goffs, on bad moons, one evil sunz, and so on - check out the 2nd ed ork codex for ideas on paint schemes.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

If the only criteria is "to help you paint better" then go with the eldar, overall a much harder thing to paint as with orks slapdash and mistakes can actually make the model better and more in character. Eldar are usually cleaner and neater lines, plus you can really go all out and use as many different colors as you want, as apparently their sense of acsthetics is MUCH more evolved than ours.....which means they clash and get away with it...

if you're trying to challenge yourself and try advanced techniques, you want more detail.. like chaos.. but in the case of the pole.. eldar.. i paint all day every day and orks are the easiest to paint.. even with 10 skin tone variations.. eldar will challenge you the most between the 2 imo as a full time painter.

I may be an eldar player, but ironically I voted orks.

The large hordes and all the modeling options really appeal to me in the orks army. Eldar are fun as well, but they can be a bit more difficult to play. As far as paiting goes, however, the eldar give you much more creative options while pretty much every single ork you paint will be the same color...
