I bought a revolving hole punch (they are a tool for people working with leather, usually, so look in the sewing aisle) and it is perfect for cutting circles of varying sizes out of plasticard. You can make dozens of rivets per minute with this method, and it is easily the best and the fastest means.

Another method is to take a length of plastic rod (circular is fine, hexagonal is even better, but hard to get - google Plastruct) and use your x-acto knife to slice it like a salami. The problem with this method is that the slices are not (unless you have inhuman co-ordination) perfectly even and regular - okay for orks, but not for anyone else.

You can use drops of superglue. When they harden, they are just like rivets.

If the material you are using is thin enough and you have not already stuck it onto your model, turn it over, place it on a cutting mat or other cushioned surface and make indentations where you want the rivets to go. When you turn it back over, these indentations will stick out and look (a bit) like rivets. How you make the indentations is up to you - a hammer and something hard and pointy will do the trick.

Lastly, you can buy rivets from specialist modelling shops, but that is for people seeking to make scale replicas, not kitbashing.

Get a piece of wire (about 1mm diameter or less), pour out a little bit of PVA glue, dip the wire into it then dab it lightly on where you want the rivet, if the rivet is not pronounced enough for you repeat again in a few minutes. The good thing about this method is if you put a 'rivet' in the wrong place you can wipe it off straight away plus its real cheap...
All the rivets on this vehicle were done this way.

One method I've used is to buy a cheap model kit covered in rivets and cut them off that, you can slice them off with a sharp knife and pop them onto your kit with a tiny dap of glue, liquid poly is good.

Some rivets are more 'midget gem' shaped and aren't too difficult to make with clay. Roll into a small ball, flatten one side and pinch the 'top' gently until it resembles a pyramind with a flat top.

Getting them all the same size can be tricky so use them for big constructions or models with few rivets, I suggest.

i've just got the FW model master class book and thier suggestion is to grab a water filter (i got a new one from Wilkinsons fro £4.50 ish), open it up and find thousands of tiny balls in various sizes mixed with flecks of carbon.
drill an indent into the mini, use a cocktail stick, paper clip or similar to tranfer some superglue into the dent then stap a filter ball with a craft knife & place.
One filter should do a whole battalion!

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

If you want big rivets, using small 'googly eyes' from the craft shop can be a good source.

Someone ought to make an article about rivets.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.
