Bounding Dark Angels Assault Marine
|
With the new Space Marine Codex I have pretty much decided to run my Dark Angels as a Space Marine Proxy... not a hard decision. I have always wanted a dreadnought with dual CCW so I am putting an Ironclad together. I ran down to the battle bunker and picked up an Assualt drill which I figure could function as either a chainfist or seismic hammer and a right side Dreadnought CCW.
Body is AOBR Dreadnought with some scratch built extra armor for the upper sarcophagus. Hunter killer missiles from SM vehicle sprue magnetized for easy removal. Here are some images of the progress thus far.
Assault drill with meltagun from an old school landspeeder I think.
So I am currently working on extra armor for the legs and I need to add a heavy flamer to the right arm. I need rivets on the extra armor, what is the easiest way to add rivets?
Any other ideas or suggestions?

Either by cutting/punching out bits of plasticard, or by following the advice of the following article: http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Adding_Studs_to_Your_Models
Nice model by the way. Looks pretty tooled up!

I am stuck on the leg armor. Here is a view of what I am thinking about:
Basically I have drilled out and pinned a rod in the end of the upper leg joint that will be the pivot the armor is mounted to. I also found a decent plastic piece and made a couple of outer shields. They are too big and a little to smooth and rounded. So now I am thinking I will scratchbuild something a bit boxier/gothic. I am sure I have an aquila somewhere for the center shield.
Is it too much? Someone posted an image of a real ironclad ship (CSS Virginia) from the American Civil War in another thread and I like the idea of a ton of armor plates on this guy. A veritable moving mountain of armor.

I'd be happy to paint it. There would be fees involved, though. PM if interested.

Last night:
Brass rods from the two "Hip" joints and central Aquila shielding.
Side view of the new leg extra armor. I am not sure of the best way to finish that tab that extends out to the right, but it looks too long to me. It is basically the weapon cowling from a razorback turret cut in half and with plasticard added to extend it over the critical areas
Blue tack everything together.
Stack of all the separate bits right now, I imagine I should leave most of them off until I paint.
So what I definitely have left to do is the Heavy flamer on the right arm and adding some DA icons to the leg armor. I was thinking about trimming out the edges leg armor with a gothic look but more than likely I will just add rivets around the edge.
I am also thinking about the base. I wish i would have done something to give a slightly more dynamic pose. Has anyone done this with an AOBR dreadnought? I guess it would be possible to cut the leg joint at a couple places and go back with green stuff. My main table is a city fight table so I will probably base this guy accordingly. He is also going to get a drop pod. The new drop pod model is pretty awesome but I am dissappointed that it doesn't really accomodate a dreadnought. (See this thread: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/219905.page)
So I am tempted to buy another kit and try some modifications to make it less of a birdcage and make it possible for a dread to get in and out.
Comments welcome.

Short word to the wise, trying to change the position of a space marine dreadnought's feet is more trouble than it looks like and is probably not worth it. Pics later.

So here is an intermediate photo working on moving the position of a leg/foot:
It was a few hours of work for raising the left leg all of about 3mm. Definitely not worth the effort and without the extra armor it would have looked unbalanced. I ended up having to rebuild most of the hydraulics and all of the cabling. This is the AOBR dread, and it is probably not as flexible as other dreads since it is so few pieces.
Here is a closeup of the final work on the legs:
It eventually all came together though:
Overall it turned out to be what I was hoping for... a big chunk of overarmed, walking armor.
Will see if I can actually get to the point of painting. Right now the arms, leg armor and hunter killer missiles are all removable to make it a little easier.

Absolutely cool. My AOBR dread is just waiting for some work to be done to it. I love what you did with the pose from the legs. makes it all worthwhile. it gives movement and presence to the whole model.
great work.

I haven't put a regular plastic dreadnought together yet (I stocked up on metal dreads before the plastic ones came out and I have a few already assembled dreads from ebay) so they may be easier to pose. If you think about doing it, plan on completely rebuilding all the connections back from scratch and plan on it taking about 5 times longer than you expect. I think the pictures here exaggerate the effect, the actual change seems barely noticeable when I look at it. Anyway, it is a good learning experience.
