Well it's winter & from some of the threads I've read, I'm not the only one who doesn't have a place to spray paint & airbrush indoors. Hope this helps gives someone else an idea to make thier own. Mine moves the air w/a shop-vac. The only thing I actually bought for it was the Central A/C filter. Everything else was scrap materials & supplies from work & leftovers from home improvement projects. Any questions & comments welcome.

Bye the way I did try it out tonight & so far it seems to work. My wife didn't complain about the smell & she was right above me in the living room.

It's very cool. Are the sides and top glass or plastic? I going guess plastic since there's screws in the side pieces. Do you have plans on how to clean them when they get coated with overspray?

That's an awesome idea as im in the same crappy situation with the weather and people in my house.
The thing concerns me tho is the spray fumes being ignited by the ac motor in the shop vac that could be bad.
I remember a warning label on mine stating just that, not to use it to pickup flammable materials.
for airbrushing it would be fine tho unless you where using alcohol to thin
maybe a few high cfm computer fans would work better and be safer brushless motors come to mind

The glass is plexi-glass. The top was a mistake, when 1 of the sheet-metal guys where I worked, made a mistake fabricating a side window for a sikorsky s-76.(I'm not a full time aircraft mechanic anymore if anyone is curious) The side glass is also plexi from a 318 excavator I was prepping for sale. (current job) It had sun crasing (spider-web cracks inside the glass). The side glass was cut from 1 piece. As for the worry about fumes igniting from the electric motor. I'm not too worried about that. The shop-vac I have has the motor's cooling air separate from the air that is moved by the impellar of the vaccum. I would reccomend The Quiet Deluxe Series by Shop-Vac if anyone is interested doing this. Mine is 5.5hp. Also it is quiet enough that when my wife was upstairs watching TV, she didn't hear it.

yea I wouldnt worry bout the fumes igniting either. That warning label is more for gasoline and things of that nature. Yes paint fumes can catch fire but Im sure going threw the filter like that first would really limit the chances.
That being said, thats a pretty nice paint booth. How well does the filtering work so far?

KingCracker the only spay painting I've had a chance to do is use some automotive grey primer on a couple of figs. The smell was to a minimum. The important part is wasn't enough to get upstairs. As a side note I airbrush w/enamels which means I'm thinning w/mineral spirits which IS, if not more flamable than gasoline in the fine mist of an airbrush, so my fingers are still crossed. Next time I get the chance to airbrush I'll let you know if I still have eyebrows.

you could even run the vacuum hose from the exhaust port to your clothes dryer vent so it would dump the smelly air outside or just stick it out the nearby window

Infernus I thought of that, unfortunately I can't use the dryer vent, it's in an inconveniant crawlspace. The exhaust comes out of a wierd diffused vent , probably what makes it quiet. I do plan to put the shop-vac out in the garage, just hope the hose reaches.

Sonofruss I thought of some sort of fan in my spray booth, but then I realized I would need a lot of ducting, & a fan needs to have the power to move a large volume of air & fast. I knew my shop-vac can do that. Believe it or not there is plywood in it. 1/4" on the bottom & 1/8" on the top. I tried to keep the weight down so it won't be hard to move. The white sides are a thin MDF used from the bottom of an old shelf thing my wife was throwing out.

That's a pretty dead'ard contraption you got there. I know what you mean about this garbage-y weather. I live in Wisconsin and its about 15 degrees on a good day.
I just primed a batch of AoBR mini's yesterday in my basement. I used a space heater and a gas mask, works just fine for me. Though I wouldn't mind having something like that.

aunshova, even though the only thing I bought was the airfilter, everything else can be bought @ Home Depot or Lowes type places. When I was faced w/the fact I couldn't do the little bit of modeling I get to do every once in a while I first searched for something already made to do the job. I did find some & I'm not putting those products down they're probably awsome, but I'm not spending almost $300 for one.

I actually hope everyone does try to make one but, since what I'm using to power this is not truly intended for this purpose (a shop-vac) Im not going to give any plans or sell premade ones. All it takes is one person to do something truly stupid w/it & I'm in court or jail for the rest of my life. This was not written to offend anyone I am just covering my butt, I learned that along time ago when I became an aircraft mechanic. I will say the hardest & one of the most important things to make is the carboard funnel thing (picture 3). What determined the size was the top clear glass (I already had that) & then I chose an A/C filter to maximize the area for light. Also seal any seems w/silicone or caulk. For part that are removable I used foam tape. I did that to the top so I can replace the filter.
