I'm finishing a batch of flamethrower and plasma gun guardsmen right now. I completed these two bodies ahead of the others in order to make sure I had the color schemes for the weapons right, and to get the feel for some painting techniques I haven't used before. This flamer is my first attempt at a cinematic effect, and I'd very much appreciate any comments or criticisms on the way I've painted the gout of fire. I'd also like to know what you think of the hazard stripes on the fuel tanks - should I keep doing these freehand, or do I need to use some kind of straight-edge or tape? (Doing either on something this size sounds pretty difficult)

The flame looks a tad too bright (sounds silly, I know) drybrushing some black on the top of the flames should give it some great contrast!

The models look great though! I really like the color scheme, and the cape, pauldrons, tassets, wonderful!!

You're not going to burn yourself out before you get 40 of these guys done, are you?

Huh, I've never seen anyone actually model the flames from a flamer. Cool idea. I like the cape and the addition of the drum feed or whatever that is to the plasma rifle. Looks awesome.

... because that totally makes sense.

Both conversions look good, I agree with toning down the flames but good job, can't wait to see them finished.

I just tried a black wash on the upper parts of the flame in order to tone down the colors and give it a "smoky" look. Let me know what you think - is this about right, or too dark?

Regarding the comments about putting this much work into guardsmen - these really aren't too bad. I'm converting and painting them by "assembly line" method (performing the same task on each model in turn) about a squad at a time, which speeds things up considerably.

Says the guy who makes cardboard models, lol...

I'd say this level of detail is what makes a great army. If more people did this, the hobby would be a better place.

I like it! Very 'burn em all and let the emperor sort them out'

-Inquisitor Leet

We are at war with forces too terrible to comprehend. We cannot afford mercy for any of its victims too weak to take the correct course. Mercy destroys us; it weakens us and saps our resolve. Put aside all such thoughts. They are not worthy of Inquisitors in the service of Our Emperor. Praise his name for in our resolve we only reflect his purpose of will.

I just finished the bodies for a bunch of these guys, but I'd like comments on this special pose. I tried to paint this plasma gun to show the coils on top glowing, to indicate the gun is starting to overheat (the coils are normally coppoer-colored). The guardsman is supposed to be holding his left hand above the gun, testing to see how much heat he can feel. I tried to use some source lighting techniques to show reflections from the glowing metal on his hand, some of the edges of the gun, and a little on his cape. I'd appreciate some suggestions on this. Is it about right? Too subtle? Should it be more orange (I was worried that using orange would make the reflections look too strong for the source)?

I didn't bother with source lighting on any of the flamers. Most just have pilot lights, and even the one shown in this thread doesn't seem like it would cause a visible reflection off the trooper in daylight.

Yes, someone's called them that before. I'd better come up with a proper name for them before it sticks.

Love the plasama gun coonversion, not sure on the lighting effect however... doesn't work for me.

My comments are my own, and mine own alone. If you have any complaints, please report to Mr Spanky who will take them down for you.....

Digging the pauldrons and the capes. The grenade launcher into the plasma gun is a great conversion.

I'm not sure it looks quite right yet myself - do you have any suggestions for correcting it?

WaaaaghLord:

The shoulder pads are made of plasticard, with putty filling the crevices between the parts (one flat trapezoid, a slice of half-round for the outward end, and four rectangular strip segments). I made some of the early ones with green stuff, but it took longer and never looked as consistent.

Sorry, I'd love to help, but pants at it myself! :-)

Cudos on the shoulder pads though, thats some serious work!

Have you ever considered casting them for consistancy?
