Subject: Some questions about GW's foundation paints
|

I'm beginning my Jetlocks Eldar army. Going with Mechrite Red to do Saim Hann.
My questions....
1. Do you need to prime with the new foundations? I've read it's not necessary, but like to hear more opinions.
2. Do I prime in white or black when using Mechrite Red? My thought is to do white, but black primer will create shadows and give darker finish.
3. Anyone have stories of what they did?
I have some trimming to do before I begin my blog over in P&M. Currently doing a couple of test paint jobs on bikes.

Priming will help paint stick.
you can use white undercoat , most people use wash
over their basic color anyways, there is the shadow.

The mechrite red covers nicely over black primer. The paint is too thick straight from the pot, so some thinning is needed before applying.
I'm currently painting a test fig for my exorcist marines, and two thin coats of mechrite were needed for nice finish. Finish is nice matte and washes stick to it very well.

Foundation Paints and the new GW washes really are a godsend. Like Metsuri said, 2 thin layers of watered-down foundation gives a very nice finish, even over a black undercoat.
I always undercoat using black. It gives soo much shading "for free" compared to priming with White.

be careful with the mordian blue foundation, my friend bought some to do his IG, he painted the torsos/legs and it dried a lovely deep blue, however when we came to paint the arms (several weeks later) the paint had become several shades lighter (not sure how this happens, but it did ?...?...?...!...?)

Anyone's thought on this process.....
Prime black, thin coats of Mechite Red, wash with Badab Black, drybrush with Mechite Red or similar color.
I'm painting the canopy and engine/fins of Eldar jetbike.

It depends on what kinda finish you want.
I'd go at it like this:
Prime black, then apply 2-3 watered-down coats of Mechrite Red, and leave the recesses black. If i still accidentally paint Red where its supposed to be black i'd just use Badab Black there.
When you're done painting a smooth layer of mechrite red, its basically up to you if you wanna make it even more red by highlighting it up to Blood Red or making your own mix of Mechrite and Blood Red.

For me personally I like the red wash over mecharite red, it deepens the color and more than one coat will make the red darker and deeper, looks really cool.

I use the Baal Red wash over the Mechite Red Foundation. The Mechrite is a tad flat to highlight with and you might want to use Blood Red instead.
I use a Krylon Gray to prime my models, but I neglected to prime my AoBR marines. A basecoat of Chaos Black, followed by Mordian Blue Foundation, washed with Asurmen Blue, then highlighted with Enchanted Blue turned out some very nice Crimson Fists. I didn't notice any oxidation to the color after using the Mordian Blue, in fact all the Foundation shades I've used have stayed pretty close to tone after drying.
One critique I do have is that the Foundation paints have a really strong odor. Some have stunk to high heaven while others just have a strong acryllic paint odor. YMMV, but use ventilation!

Well as much as I'd like the "dirty" look to my models, battlin' isn't a clean business. I know the Eldar are an elegant race, so dirty isn't them.
I will use these techniques and post some pics soon.

i would undercoat black then a couple of thin coats of mechanarite red then a couple of thin coats of blood red for the start - this is the method for the red on this model ( WIP picture not using my light tent so apologies for the quality):
I then used the new red ink & some thinned sorched brown to do some initial shading

This is a test bike. Why it looks rough. I original painted with a horrible can of yellow spray paint, then primed white then with water down mechrite red.

Personally, I prefer the foundation colours over a black undercoat. This makes the colour darker and allows you to leave black in the recesses, meaning that you don't need a wash, you can simply highlight up.

Wow, I thought that 'jack looked great in black, but in red it's even better! Those foundation paints and washes are in my opinion the best gaming development of the 21st century.

That will end up pretty dark. Mechrite Red is a deep red, not a bright red like you normally see Saim-Hann in. I would do a base of Mechrite, then go over it again with a brighter red of your choice. If you still have decent shading from the black primer, use a red wash. If you need detail again, use black. Either way, brighten the edges back up with the brighter red again.

I wouldn't use black wash as it is too dark. The sepia (using several coats) or mud would give you better results.
Then highlight using mechrite mixed with orange/ flesh/ yellow of your choice.

No foundation red, but does use the washes. I used it on my BAs (with 2 layers BA red over black undercoat) and the test model took 45 minutes of painting time, with blazing orange highlights and all the details done (eyes, metal, gun, base, cables, iconography)

@ Waaagh_Gonads..... Thanks for the link
My plan involves 50 jetbikes (24 warlocks, 24 regular including 8 cannons, and 2 farseers) and 3 fire prisms.
Going with Saim Hann scheme. Engine parts primed black, boltgun drybrush, canopy and armor primed black, mechrite red paint, possible blood red drybrush and may use water transfers. Not going with any black stripes, too hard to paint straight. More on this.....
Farseers.... 2 of them. Dire Avenger helmets and Exarch bodies. Close to farseers bodies while staying plastic.
Warlocks....doing 24 of them. 17 get witch blade, 7 get singing spears. Using Dire Avenger heads and torsos for Warlocks.
Bike riders..... doing 24 of them 8 have shuriken cannons. Using Guardian torsos and heads. I see that each box has 2 torsos with boobies. So on principle I have to make one squad of 6 with boobies, lol. That might be enough to mesmerize the regulars I game with during game. At very least the ammo needed to talk smack about being shot up by girlies.

Can you put masking tape on the foundations and not bring up paint when tape is removed?
Or is there a better way of doing straight line painting?

I kinda like it. Wasn't that bad to paint, many layers. Last night I stared at Eldar codex for like an hour. Went back and forth between yellow and red. Then I saw the Ulthwe So now black got thrown into mix. I have ravenwing and Deathwing army already. How much black and white can I take,

check your local harware store for low-tack masking tape & also (if you can spare the cash) an airbrush for this project would be awesome.
for your metals i would suggest you give them a heavy drybrush of tin bitz before the boltgun metal - trust me you'll get a far better result.
Can't wait to see the finished army. Good luck

To give you a different result from Mecharite Red, check out the Chaos Marines in my Gallery.
I used a black base, then the Mecharite Red, followed with a Devlan Mud wash. I am going to highlight with a Mech' Red and other, brighter red mix, but you can see how the brown deepens the red.
Just something to think about

I love using the foundation paints as a dark base for almost all my figures now. The mordian blue is SOLID when hit with a wash of asurmen blue and then highlighted up to enchanted blue. Really love how it blends.
And I also like what some people have done with Mechrite Red and Gryphonne Sepia.

Instead of the masking tape or edging/painter's tape found at a hardware store (which you will have to cut to size) check your fine arts or craft store for thin-strip painter's tape. You'll find it in the section that has painter's tools like larger brushes, canvas tools, palettes, etc.
I just found it in my local Michael's store last weekend. They had four different packs of varying sizes, including some for fine lines of 1/2", 1/4", and 1/8" - I was going to pick it up to line my weapon platforms but was low on scratch.
