I just purchased a Realm of Battle, and I'm planning on making a winter/snow based board for it, can anyone offer tips on producing a good snow look?

Are you going for paint or for actual snowlike texture?

Some good snow can be made from PVA glue, Baking Soda, and a bit of gloss varnish and water. Mix this up till it is about the consistency of cream of wheat and then spread it over the areas you want snow. Sprinkle some more baking soda over that, let it dry overnight, then shake off the excess. This will produce some pretty darn realistic snow.

I was thinking of painting and then adding on some flock, I'm just not sure how well the flock will hold up.

For RoB I would try a test of the baking soda mentioned above on some painted cardboard.

It is likely to be quite resilient (as it is mixed in the glue).

Flock would look great as a light dusting getting caught in crack, but I would be worried about it looking crappy after being played with for a while - especially if it is stored or carried around a bit.

(PS - when I read the thread title, I thought "cool - someone is modeling orks on snowboards as counts as bikers! LOL)

Yeah, the snow that I mentioned above is quote solid, solid enough to firmly secure things to bases, and you would be hard pressed to get it off it you didn't like it. You won't need to undercoat the board though (it goes on black bases without showing any though), but if you feel the need to, go with white.

And that snowboard comment may have just inspired me to go through with making and Ork bike army, since all my terrain and my future game board is going to be snow, snowboards would make more sense (with Wazdakka on a big snowmobile). Oh the ideas!

Your image isn't working.

I would so love to do this army, but I have no idea how an all bike (snowboard) army would work. I would have Wazdakka on a big snowmobile (as well as possibly some Nob bikers) and buy Boyz to put on converted snowboards (plasticard with the TL Dakkagun on the front and a rokkit with exhausts on the back) to be my warbikes (be cheaper than the normal ones).

I dunno how an all bike army would do game wise, but I may just be tempted to make 1,000 points of this just to convert up for fun.

Ah - IMDB does not allow image deep linking by the look of it...

I would suggest trying to use painted sand. Snow flock including baking soda rubs off pretty easy. But give it a try on one part before you do it all, who knows.

Okay, after thinking it out (and learning I can make a 1.5k army for about $170) I think I actually will go through with that, once I get everything, look our for my WIP blog, hehe!

Just 3 boxes of Boyz (to be Snowboards) and 3 boxes of Warbikes (to be Nobz on Snobmobiles and Wazzdakka on a Snowmobile) makes the whole 1.5k points. Awesomesauce!

Ah, ah,
We come from the land of the ice and snow,
From the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.
The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands,
To fight the horde, singing and crying: Valhalla, I am coming!

Here are a few of pics of the snowboard a friend made using the snow from GW. I believe he undercoated it black with light coat sprayed on of light grey/blue then lighter blue and then white drybrushes, especially concentrating on around rocks etc with the grey/blue tints for ice. The snow flock from GW. You need flock on the hills or you may as well not use the boards as the figures will not stay where you place them but will instead slide around.

Looks very nice so far! I am always tempted to do snowy terrain, but the thought of doing an entire matching board to use them always put me off.
I really like the snow/ice effect on the skull pits too.

Thanks!

I just dry brushed Ice Blue lightly over the skulls, then added Woodland Scenics 'Scenic Water' waited about an hour and then added some snow flock to it. When they mix the water becomes frosted looking, its a rather nice effect up close.

That's a great looking snow board Cyporiean! My son and I are doing our orks as our "house" army and we are doing the board snow as well as the bases on all of our orks. I love the ice effect, we're gonna steal that idea, thank you!

I wish the minis looked as awesome as that board does O_O

Nuclear: Properly pronounced new-clear, not new-cue-lir. There is no 'u' between the c and l, so stop saying it because it just makes you sound like a dumbass. This includes nucleolus, and all other derivatives of the word.

I'm slowly working on Repainting all my Warmachine stuff, they were my first minis. I've redone those Cygnar Jacks, but they flash screws with their paint.

A slighty better pic of one of them.

Looks great! Beware, though that snow tables tend to discolor over time. The white tends to pick up other colors pretty badly. Eventually, it often looks yellowed or brown with grey. :-(
