Very funny.

Someone bought an epic Squiggoth/Orkisaurus off ebay Australia for $121! That's right - over 3 times the retail price from Forgeworld.

Someone is going to get quite a shock when it arrives in the mail!

While i have no idea what Orkisaurus is,
I think (1 Forge World Resin Orkersaurus or EPIC ORK GARGANTUAN SQUIGGOTH)
might have confused some people.

Meaning its big enough to be used in 40k , and even bigger to be used in EPic.

again, i dunno what orkisaurus in 40k is.

That's just the standard "Epic scam". They don't actually show the scale of the miniature when they sell it, they usually only sell miniatures available in both scales (squiggoths, thunderbolts, valkyries, orcas, etc), the auctions are always correctly listed in the Epic category, etc.

Whether it's a scam or not depends on your point of view. Should potential buyers know that what the single word "Epic" in the description means? Should sellers be pressured to include size information especially in cases where there is a risk of confusion, etc.

Personally, I'm in the Caveat emptor side of the argument.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

On the one hand, a knowledgeable GW player ought to be aware that they used to make a game called Epic which featured 6mm figures.

On the other hand, Epic is not a valid scale description. The game has been out of print for some years and it's probable that a lot of newer players have no idea it exists.

A truly honest seller would make the scale and size of the model clear in the description.

It's not out of print. The auction description clearly states that it is and Epic miniature, even going to far as to suggest a unit type that's only available in the Epic rules. There's nothing remotely dishonest about this auction.

Well in this case he's listed it as being 'epic', given the weight and a picture, I don't think there's an attempt at deceit. But I've seen worse examples.

I've seen large items apparently being sold for smallish amounts and been confused for a while because if you open the item description it mentions nothing of Epic, it does not mention it in the title or description at any point but look to the top of the screen and in tiny print you'll see...

"Toys & Games > Wargames & Role-Playing > Warhammer > Epic 40,000"

And that's your only clue to it's scale in the whole thing. Easy enough to miss when you're searching eBay as a whole and not specifically browsing the Epic section.

We had this whole discussion with the "sprues missing" from a "complete" model. It's obviously one of a number of dirty tricks some sellers use and telling people they should be 'more aware' when buying things isn't good enough in either case. Genuine mistakes always get made by buyers and seller, but that doesn't mean we should provide shelter for some sellers to deliberately mislead. Sellers should always be clear about their product - the fact that some people defended the 'sprue-missing' seller on the basis he was technically playing within the rules made me sick.

There's this weird mentality that scammers are widespread on eBay and something to be tolerated, if you get burned it's just a lesson to be learnt. This is amazing,
you sure as hell wouldn't tolerate that kind of treatment from a shop, why any different online?

It might suck for the buyer that looks at it and thinks he is getting a 40k scale model, but it is clearly labeled as epic, and unless that is the world's largest table it isn't too hard to see that it is a tiny model.

As is said, it's clearly listed as epic, and the size of the table and the model itsself should be dead giveaways...

It's worth what someone will pay for it. Didn't get to read the listing, so don't know if there was some 'word trickery'; but if you're going to buy on ebay, then do some research.

A deader give-away would be to specify the scale and size of the miniature.

Regardless of any other 'clues', if the seller wants to be totally up front and honest about what he is selling, he should provide hard facts rather than rely on buyers' supposed ability to make inferences from external knowledge he may not possess.

How hard is it to say this is a 6mm figure measuring 5 inches long (or whatever.)

Obviously the buyer didn't know what he was buying (and a few others looking at the bids) and I'm not sure if the seller was deliberately trying to catch people out. Either way when the buyer eventually gets it delivered and realises I feel sorry for him and I'd hope if the seller isn't a tit they could sort it out.

In other words, I don't find this "very funny."

For what its worth, he does list the approximate weight of the miniature for shipping purposes.

Its a sketchy ad for sure, but anybody reading it should be able to decipher it for themselves.

I don't think it's a scam. I bet the buyer will think he's been ripped off though.

It's listed in the 40k section, so it's at least mildly misleading. But at least there's a pic.

Hmm, I don't see a problem with this ad. It's honest, it includes all the info, and it doesn't include anything misleading.

If I were selling such an item, I'd make it very clear that it's for epic and not for 40k, but that's just me. There does come a point where a person needs to read the auctions themselves, and this might be one of those times.

The ad was fine.

Looking at the bids, there was a whole horde off silly people bidding on the model once it passed the Forge World price.
