Dakka Discussions was always meant to be a place for people to talk about gaming in general. . .topics that don't really fit anywhere else on the site very well.

However recently, Dakka Discussions has started to become the dumping ground for waaay to many 40K threads, to the point where threads about non-40K games just get quickly pushed right off the front page in no time.

So, we've gone ahead and made a 40K General Discussion forum which is now the place to put any general 40K related threads that don't fit into any of the other 40K forums.

PLEASE make an effort to put your threads in the proper forums instead of just dumping them here in the Dakka Discussions forum.

So, for example:

  • Threads about modeling (including stuff like: 'how do I put XXX model together' and 'what is this old model?') belong in the PAINTING & MODELING forum.

  • Threads about what to name your Space Marine chapter or what Chapters you should include in your Deatwatch unit should either be in the 40K FLUFF FOR NUTTERS or the PAINTING & MODELING forums (depending on what slant the thread is really about).

  • Thanks!

I don't think we need it, there's already a half dozen 40k forums AND forums for other games. I think we risk discussion on this board becoming too fragmented.

I have to agree with Kid_Kyoto here. It's no secret that this forum is mostly excited about 40K. I think that separating the discussions dilutes the value of general hobby discussion as a whole, since most "40K" threads apply to other games in the hobby.

If anything, I think the mods should be a bit quicker to lock redundant threads. Do we need the seven or so recent cropping of "Value Miniature Transports" threads?

The more specific your forums get, the less traffic they get, and the more pointless they become.

We have a 'General' forum over at SB.com, and other than posting the odd thread about television series' (Heroes, Fringe, Termiantor, Lost etc.) it's mostly just 'What If' threads because all the actual conversations have been moved off to the gaming forum, anime forum, movie forum, non-Sci-Fi forum, VS forum, chainstory/fiction forums. It's a wasteland of really banal conversation (even by 'theintarwebs' standards).

So just be careful of that.

Yeah but the fact is that even though de jure Dakka Discussions was for general topics, de facto it was just becoming 40k General Discussion. better to have the 40k Discussion locked up where it cant hurt anyone and let the actual general/fantasy discussion take place in Dakka Discussion eh? ;P

As always, if you spot a thread that you think may need to be locked the proper thing to do is click the 'notify moderator' button to give us a heads-up about it.

Only the 40K general discussions were overrunning the Dakka Discussions forum, meaning if you have a general WHFB topic you want to discuss that doesn't fit into any of the existing WHFB forums you should feel free to continue posting it here in the Dakka Discussions.

We are definitely aware of that issue and I'm keen to try to avoid over-separating the forums. We will keep an eye on the numbers, as always, and if it looks like it was a bad idea to separate the two then we can always change things back.

I do think in this case the change is warranted because there are plenty of true 'Dakka Discussions' that are constantly being posted that are discussing general gaming concepts. However our previous forum structure had no official place for 40K and WHFB general gaming questions and with the increase in posts the 40K general discussion has started to really choke up this forum with topics that would ONLY be of interest to 40K players.

As such, I think the 40K general discussion forum will be of use. But again, only time will tell!

    Let's see...

    I'm making an Inquisitor-Scale warband

The Battle Bunker's Bizarre Bazaar is tomorrow.

Chrispy looks different in real life than in his profile pic (of course the hat makes it hard to tell!)

I just got half an army back from a Dakka painter, loved them, and will be getting ready to send another army's worth to him. I also sent out a few models to another painter, also from Dakka.

    Is any of that interesting?

Back on-topic, I'll definitely check out the new forum... thanks for the heads up!

I think that the more forums you add the easier it will be for new users (like me) to add there bit to the appropriate place.
Not sure where your gonna fit the Michael Jackson forum in your site though! LoL!
I only say that as i am getting bombarded with mail about a post i randomly commented on earlier.

So what gets discussed on this forum? If all 40K topics are off-topic... and modelling goes in modelling and fluff goes in fluff, what goes here, exactly?

Bitching about GW? If so, change it to the "GW h8trs vs GW fanbois" forum.

I could not agree more. But at the risk of being a part of m-theory/ chaos theory, I must say that it is the "Dakka" name that inspires 40k gamers to post anywhere they please.

I suggest the forum should be renamed "fluffy kitten bikini motor-horse rider" Or something to that effect...or not.

Or maybe we can talk about m-theory exclusively. Ok...great...I did it. I let Schroedinger's cat out of the box/bag. We are all way too obsessed about plastic fantasy. And somehow that is cool. What a weird cool world we live in.

I agree that nothing irrelevant should be put in other threads, and I'm not saying that just because Yakface yelled at me for an incorrect post.

The topic is called "Dakka Discussions" - and Dakka is a 40K term. Is it any wonder that people think it is OK to discuss 40K?

Secondly, the title is a little ambiguous. "Discussions" can be anything.

If I can make a suggestion - this topic could be renamed as something like, "General Wargaming Discussion." There may be a better name than this, but I think it would be an improvement. It is all in the name, after all.

You might as well call it the the troll forum, that way people at least know that this forum is designated for trolling. Dakka discussions is a horrible name for this forum, Are we discussing the status of this site? I got no suggestions apart for the on quoted above. My point is that nobody knows that dakka discussions means talking about stuff other than 40k (dakka is a 40k term).
