I was just wondering if I could get some feedback on my colour scheme and painting technique. I know its not the best and if anyone has any tips on how to get better then it would be welcome. Anyway I tried to do something original with my orks and picked orange, it came out a bit bright so I used red as a secondary colour to take some of the edge off the orange. I'm rather pleased with how it came out. Anyway here are 3 of my Nobz i've painted. I'll put some more up when i've painted them... It takes me ages to paint anything for some reason.

Edit: Just noticed I havn't painted the skull or the top Knot... Oops!

The painting looks pretty good, but you should drill out your gun barrels. Makes for a much cooler look.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

That sounds like a good idea. Not sure why I didn't think of that, thanks. I shall try that and post pictures when its done, not sure when I'll get round to that though as I appear to have misplaced my drill bits .

Some more pictures of some I've just finished including one Deffkoptor. I'm aware there is one "albino" ork, this is because I was nagged into trying differant skin tones and by the time I'd finished I couldn't really be bothered to go over it because I sort of liked how it came out.

Edit: the Deffkoptor isn't actually finished my bad. But you can see where its going. Also How can I mix bronzes because at my games workshop they say they don't sell them anymore and was wondering what an effective bronze recipe is. Thanks.

oooh I think i might have a good idea for bronze

i was thinking along the lines of painting gold and then darkening that with say a wash of a lightish brown of some kind

I dont know if its just me but my shining gold paint doesnt always go straight on, it always seems watery to me...so with that in mind could try it over a brown?

just some thoughts heh

I was thinking maybe mixing a brown or dark red with Gold, washing it with brown sounds good, yes in my experiance it's watery too. I'm not sure though i might try it on a few spare bits of sprue or something and see wich looks the best. Hmm not a bad idea that... *Dashes off cackling with glee*

We paintz it red cuz red makez it go fasta!
You should try watering your paints down a bit, it looks kinda of thick in some areas.

Nuclear: Properly pronounced new-clear, not new-cue-lir. There is no 'u' between the c and l, so stop saying it because it just makes you sound like a dumbass. This includes nucleolus, and all other derivatives of the word.

Mixing them with speed freaks? If you dont have a bunch of fast attacks Im sure it wont happen. I really dig the red and orange tho.

I think that this is a tough scheme to pull off. Red and orange are next to each other on the color wheel. To have both a dominant feature in you scheme is a little tough.

Either 1 or the other is a good offset for the green. The technique themselves are both executed in a fine manner. The 3 colors together (triad of green, red, and orange) are in discord.

So.. don't stop what you've started but a good color wheel (about $1) and a few online lessons in color theory go a LONG way in making a cohesive looking army.

I generally think that the majority of table top quality armies that look good are due to color selection more then technique.

Regards.
This book is excellent and written so it is easy to understand (and reasonably priced).

Thanks;

Karmaiko: I find if I water them down they become too watery by far but it's probably more down to my ineffective mixing than anything else. I think I'll water down the orange if I was too water them down as I'm sure thats the one I'm having the most trouble with thickness wise.

KingCracker: I'm not big on fast attack so thats good.

jgemrich: Until you said that I didn't think they looked to bad at all . Although having said that I still dont really see that much of a problem but I shall check a colour wheel out for sure.

Hmmm.

So... I don't think I said they looked bad. I think I tried to respond to your request for feed back on the colour scheme and how to improve. However, it is only my opinion on how to improve in the future.

Good luck.

I didn't mean to imply that, I just didn't see the clash of colours and now they have been pointed out I can. Although I can see why my phrasing seemed that way, my apologies.

If you can't find the GW bronze, try looking for Reaper Pro Paints or the Reaper Master Series. There's a great bronze metallic in their line up that I use.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

Not big on fast attack? Have you used them yet? Im telling ya, stuffing a bunch of boyz into as many trukks as you can, and then pouring them out onto your enemy is GREAT!!! Add to that, a lightning fast strike from a nicely build bike squad from the flank. That will kick some serious ass!

thanks peeps.

Urm. I use my Deffkoptas at the minute and they can good for flanking if my friends terminators don't blow them up. See both the people I play normally play Space marines and Daemon hunters >.<. But I can only see my fast attack choices getting splattered, because at the minute the only reason I win is because I field so many models compared to my opponents. Although a trukk rush does sound like fun .

Edit:

@ Deffskullz: Thanks I'm actually looking into alternate paint sources now because all my mixing of the GW paints have failed and come out totally wrong .

At the minute i'm painting my boyz. I've decided to paint them with more metal and less orange. Hopefully I'll have pics up of the finished squad by this evening... Although given my painting speed more than likely sunday heh. Wondering about painting the boyz' skin lighter too. Not sure... Any oppinions?

Just a quick question, bought some of these new fangled things called "washes" today . Just wondered if I had to water them down like the old inks? Am not sure and don't want to waste any at 2.50 a pot.

Slap it on liberally to needed areas, I occasionally add abit of water if i want a less conspicuous wash

Washes are win tho
