Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

After seeing another thread somewhere in here talking about how the only new codexes are going to be space marines, I did a bit of inquiry over beer #6 with someone who has a 5 beer limit and shall remain unnamed, but is a very important person...(I can't really detail more at the risk of people guessing who, and then it working its way to them and damaging a relationship)...

But the release date for the Necron codex is scheduled for January 2011.

I was actually rather drunk as well and completely forgot to ask about the Dark Elf codex, which is why I got him drunk in the first place :(

Sounds good.

Your lucky I tried the exact same thing with an already drunk hobo, last week.Yet sad thing is all he could manage was to point towards the East, mumble something about the "end times" and vomit on my shoes. Then proceed to follow me to into a shop and shout things at me while I bought milk.lol.

But seriousally I hope they don't kill off DE,yet I fear GW has made them the new squats.

That's a long way out, with one more release this year (probably Grey Marines with Poor Hygene but not confirmed) and presumably 2 for 2010 that's a lot of question marks.

Inquisition (in some form) in 2010?

Tau (again)?

Dark Elfs?

Is there an easier release they can do than Necrons? The Necs need rules, not really models.

I just got wind of Blood Angels and Black Templar being those two in 2010 that will be released. Apparently, GW had the bright idea that releasing all the 'non-codex astartes' space maroons around the same time was a good idea.

One of the biggest leaks I also heard about Black Templar was their lack of preferred enemy in the new codex. Sounds like BT may've gotten nerfed.

I'm not one to give out my sources, though I will say this guy was probably as hammered as the OP's leaker.

"From the fires of Betrayal unto the blood of revenge we bring the name of Lorgar, the Bearer of the Word, the favored Son of Chaos, all praise be given to him. From those that would not heed we offer praise to those who do, that they might turn their gaze our way and gift us with the Boon of Pain, to turn the Galaxy red with the blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods."

I really hope that you are mistaken, or that they have some alternate rule to replace this.

I would be sorely depressed if my Angry Space Marines in Black Power Armor (who are not at all like other Angry Space Marines in Different-Colored Armor) suddenly got hit with the Nerfbat.

That's great that they're coming out so soon though. I'm excited, either way.

Stupid GW. Stupid, stupid GW. The game dosent need 3 more marine codexes more than it needs dark eldar, necrons or inquisition. I have friends who have given up 40k until their new codex comes out for goodness sake! GW should be trying to be trying to bring in these disenfranchised players, not keep them out.

Given they started them only recently, any drunk could have speculated that they would be released either the end of 2010 or early 2011. They follows the usual development time-line.

I believe Space Wolves were confirmed for this year some time ago.

I was in Baltimore on business, and can't exactly duplicate effort although I will say that the person in question pretty much can't be outdone in terms of authority to speak on the subject. That wasn't a guess. There aren't question marks on the release date because it isn't a guess. =p

And I don't particularly care whether anyone believes me or not; for all you know I'm a random nobody that had a drink with a redshirt in a local GW store, right? I just thought I'd share a piece of intel to offer a little light at the end of a long, long tunnel.

I said that I'm not particularly interested in trying to establish to my credibility because I have no vested interest in it. IE, you can believe me or not; I don't particularly care either way.

I think it's plausible. That far out, it might change, but I think it's probably consistent with other rumors.

Necrons and Tau both seem to be in a similar state. They could just do a quick revamp, fix the rules, add a unit or two. Or, they could do a 'rebuilt from the ground up' approach, but I don't see that happening. But, GW is a model company. They need new models to sell to release the codex.

I personally think that the Necrons and Tau could use a good ground up redo. With that said what new models could the Necrons get, that isn't already out?

You know GW is going to release what can sell the most models. Space Marines outsell everything, so that's probably why they are releaseing BA,DA,BT, SW, and any other flavor of Space Marine they can think of.

IMHO I think that they should put the focus on the enemies of the Space Marines. You can't have a good narrative without good antagonists, and bad space marines with out flavor doesn't count.

I agree. A lot of the problems with Tau could be fixed by tinkering with points values and minor rules changes. If they need to add models, a plastic Tetra would sell well, and they could do a new alien ally but not make it crap like the Vespids. Changing the other metal models to plastic would be nice -- Kroothounds and Ox, Pathfinders, Sniper Drone and the various add-on bits for the suits.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Personally, I'm hoping for more of a 'rebuild the whole line' approach to Tau and Necrons. While it's easy to just fix all the wargear to be fifth edition compatiable, and to tinker with some point costs, both are still fairly 'new' armies to 40k. I'd rather see them revisit the fluff, revamp the army list based on the fluff, and fill some holes in the line. Firewarriors and Necron Warriors are both nice, but the lack of additional weapon options in the units is a big hinderance in Fifth Edition, with nearly every other race having flamers and meltas in their 'line' units. And both armies have some significantly different rules for the armies that don't function like other races (units splitting fire for Tau, markerlights; WBB and Gauss weapons for Necrons). While I want the armies to keep some personality, I'm also okay with them replacing special rules with USRs to clean things up.

Careful what you wish for. If GWs pulls that little stunt they'll consider it to be your army's renovation and you'll be waiting another 8 years for a real codex... Unless you play SMs, in which case it will be more like 8 months.

And that is not nearly as satisifying as:
1. Complaining that you don't have an up to date codex, followed by:
2. Complaining that you're up to date codex totally nerfs your favorite unit, isn't as competitive as the old codex, and/or requires you to buy new models because all the good stuff is either new or totally stunk in the last codex.

That date seems to be realistic based on current rumors. It sounds like BA and Tyranids are on the way after the Space Hulk release, and I could imagine a BT release in 2010 too.

Regarding DE, I think people need to accept that yes, they are working on them, and no, they won't be ready until they decide they are. IMO, no deadline is a good way to get nothing done, but that seems to be the parameters (or lack thereof) for the project.

@dietrich -- I'm with you regarding Necrons. I've stood on this soapbox before, but I think they need more than a Tau Empire-style patch. Too many hobbyists don't find them interesting or appealing, and I think that's something anything other than the cheesiest of rules will have a hard time overcoming. If 2011 is accurate, that's actually a positive from that standpoint. It should give them time to work on them.
