I've gone through the painting tutorials, but couldn't find (or just didn't see) what I was looking for. The tank pics I had posted earlier (with the artillery shell sticking out of it) garnered some good feedback...
"leave a gaping hole", someone said... which I like
There's plenty of gaping holes, cuts, and general damage... so I want the impact on the front of the Rhino to look different from the rest.
Does anyone have a tutorial for painting the damage caused by a plasma cannon type weapon? I think it would lok kinda cool to take that shell's impact area and make it all melted and plasma-scorched.

Soldering irons do give a good energy weapon damage effect. I used one to... liberate, shall we say, this Devilfish engine, as well as cause some serious damage to my tau objective marker. Just make sure you don't inhale the plastic fumes though! Another option would be to gouge out a crater with your knife and then liberally apply poly cement to melt the edges down a bit.

Wow! Nice work!
Definitely what I'm looking for. I'll have to dig the soldering iron out of the bits basement... i think there's one down there somewhere.
I used a lighter, and various metal things to do alot of the damage on my rhino... for the impact spots, I used the head of a decent sized nail.
and them I drove the nail into a small piece of wood after I remembered the properties of thermal conduction... albeit too late.
