Wow! today is hottttt , actually the whole week is hot but today had lots of sun.
Normally i get agitated and probably wouldnt feel like painting , but the amount of sun is too nice to pass up!.
Note , because i want to time myself , the time is based on the actual time stamp on the camera NOT the local time ( which was from 3pm to 5pm )

So i dug up my Killa kan ( 3 old , 3 new one from trade ) based them , and primed them.
Here they are pretty much dried and not so smelly anymore ( they are kept under lid , want them to be 100% dust free! )


And here they are , realized some of the bases were still white where i held with my improvised plastic bag glove during spraying:


Thorough coat of tin bitz dry brush ( they look so cute at this point i thought i should just leave the metal that color , and should just finish the banner pole and detailing )
Note: I also use this step to cover up the exposed parts where the spray primer cannot reach 1:03pm ->1:48pm


Applied some Khemri brown on the base , tried to cover up all the black and white areas on base (Note i cannot remember how i did my base on my first killakan , this feels way slower ) 1:48-> 2:03pm


Thinking how most people seem to prefer a worn metal look , decided to apply bolt gun metal ( so it looks like its made out of steel not original bronze )
*Note , I carefully try to keep the bolt gun metal smooth and even , less touch up needed. 2:03pm -> 2:45 pm
By now the sun is over on the other side of my house , and not directly near my window , decided to stop for now so the color wont look different under a lamp.


Total time spent on painting project so far: 1 hour and 42 mins .
*Note, looking at my previous killa kan i remember why the base looked so different. Will cover them in watery coat of Charadon Granite tommorow.

**Note to self , im really not a fan of painting them this way. If i can find a primer that is silver , that would be perfect for this. No doubt speeding it even further.

Should i color it the same way i did for my previous kan? ( its generally black , with the additional color ONLY on the missles / glyphs and banner pole )
or should i actually give them colored armor plates? ( i have 2 squads so i dont mind them looking different )

I like the scheme you have set for them I say go with it .

I also like your existing paint scheme,it's very well done without being overly "busy", I particularly like the way you painted the totem skull and how you've done the base.

I actually like the blue and yellow paint scheme other ork players have painted. Whats a good place to apply those 2 color beside the banner poles?

Generally the blue and yellow can be assigned to random parts as you feel. I always quite like either blue or red rokkits myself Red Uns so they go fasta and Blue Uns cos they're lucky innit.

Well you can apply the blue and yellow as the checker pattern .

You're looking for silver spraypaint? Check a hobby store that supplies for train and warplane modelers. They have huge varieties of metals in acryls and enamels, many in spraycans so they go on the plane evenly. If you have an airbrush, it opens up your options even more and lets you use the non-spray metallics. Not only that, but the metallic enamels are glorious. It's like painting liquid foil.

Here's a list of metallic paints tat I found at my hobby store, all of which can be sprayed. The silvery colors come in spray-bottles as well as jars, but I'm not sure about the others.
- silver
- steel
- aluminum
- tin
- gunmetal (comes in many shades depending on brand)
- gold
- brass
- copper
- bronze
- red
- blue
- yellow

Day 2:

Today was nice weather as in it was breezy and cool. However the light poses major problem , cloud was constantly everywhere
and amount of sun light was pretty low. Used desk lamp to help ( can feel eye going blind ! )
So i have decided to only finish 2 kans today ( to complete 1 squad with my previous kan )


Today it starts with the basics, repainted the base as planned , picking out the Red with Mechrite Red , picking out the larger plates with bolt gun silver , lack of light is ok at this point.


Playing around with Inks , some how the red turned into orange ish: Excited with this bright look , i went back to my previous killa kan and did the same.


After the main colors are painted , rolled around the bed trying to figure out where to add the checkers... One of them didnt have a banner , so to be fair to the kan ,
i gave it checker on the ammo box. Unfortunately while painting the checkers i wasnt careful and the exploded brush head 's extra strands smeared extra paints everywhere else.
Went back with mecharite red , too lazy and couldnt be bothered to re ink . While waiting for it to dry completely, decided to paint the base some more .
Not washing the paint brush yet, dipped the dry brush into red , and use the mix to high light the red.


And then with the same brush , dipped back to Dhenab stone , and dusted the kans up alittle Note: ( oh... so this is why my brushes die so fast )


Final steps to fiinshing up , applied rusts near the rivets , painted the base with bolt gun metal , then flesh wash .


Darkened the base alittle + pic of another angle:


Cleaned up the dry brushed base ( painted the base rims black again )


*Note for tommorow:
-Need to clean up the red paint near the missle launchers , didnt see that till now.
-Wash the base tommorow with brown wash , (flesh wash doesnt look too good )
-Double check ammo belt if its clean .

And now feed back from you guys!

-Which version of red do you guys like? The bright orange? or the new 2?
-The eye slits , do you like the glowy eye ball like from the original kan? ( the new 2 i didnt paint eyeball in )

I think you either need blood or rust on those saw blades because they look to clean to be orky!

Agreed on the "war" spatter on the weapons.

One thing that bugs me a little is the missiles. I think you could do a really crisp job using tape and/ or a micron pen. IMHO brushes are not suited for crisp detail unless you are doing a lot of layers. The only other thing I would try the same kind of thing with is the lenses/ eye pieces, they seem to lack any depth fitting of an Ork-built lens; who knows what materials Orks find to build their contraptions!

There is a micron article on the front page I believe, easy to find in a search. They would be useful for your checkers as well, but I think it is pretty kool how they look Orky.

For some reason the paint job reminds me of this Tank girl photo.

Do you happen to have any pic for what the blood on a saw would look like ? i dunno the physics of the splatter pattern :'P

The micron pens seem to die when it touches paints -_-

Luna welcome to the P&M BLOG section, my responses have dropped by more than half since my thread was moved here.

I will find a good example in a minute.

Here we go, this one works.


I would just paint in red roughly around the tips of the saw, finish the edges up with some watered down paint; you can mix in dirt to make dirty blood (use an old brush for this though). After that I would just flick watered down paint in a "realistic" spinning pattern. So, aim off to the side of the blade and spatter a bit of paint, then do the same thing around the rest of the blade. For gore-spatter you can use varnish mixed with red paint spattered in the same way, but this time you use the blade itself to aim at the main body.

IMHO gore effects are best done messily or with an insane amount of OCD detail, I prefer the messy stuff, it just makes more sense.

Just put up a better one, it is a bit hard to see though. I know you can find better stuff online, but most of it just isn't suitable for DakkaDakka, that is the problem with doing most gore research. Honestly though, most of that stuff is just way too much for me, and I think it should probably not be as available as it is.

Airbrushing with extreme use of stencils can produce some amazing layered gore. This takes a lot of practice though, and just smearing some paint-gore on is all you really need to do.

Wooo ... i see that looks realistic.

*Drooling at other's blue killa kans i decided to add some blue to mine And made it more gold ish compared to the previous ones:


While i originally made my base i played with different looks but you couldnt see when it was all primed black: (Now you can see! )
Its funny , what ever paint i use at that moment , it usually result into something else turning blue ( this time the base )


Added more white on checker + base


Added rust , dirtied it up alittle (incase you havnt noticed i like my things clean ish ) rusted the floating debris too.


And Voila , 6 kans , total of 6 and a half hours .
2 kans , 2 deff dred to go for my stompy Ork kans .

I am really digging that blue on the second unit

If you're still looking for good buzzsaw gore effects, consider that there'd be an even amount around it and random flecks and globules pushed inward, aftereffects of the spinning doom that befell a cow/dog/annoying neighbor/sibling.

July 18th , (Big Mek's expensive toys -deff dreds) They are going to be painted yellow... why? because

@SONOFRUSS , the deff dred is blue ( all the black you see = blue ) It seems like the whole right side including the 3 killa kans has a shadow over it .

I tried brightening it but no luck , it was way too dark :x

Maybe it is the base it needs blue to bring out the blue on the model. hmmm
