Hi guys (and girls).

This is my first Dakka Dakka Forum post.

I'm currentely in the process of trying to build a Space Marine army. However, I do find Imperial Guard to be very tempting at times. I now realise that sometimes it's just the case of: "Belt up and get on with it."

Since the start of '09, I've been considering what Chapter colour to go for. Let's put it this way: I'm fed up with blue, or rather, Ultramarines. But don't get me wrong - They're first amonst the Emperor's finest. (I'd consider the Brazen Claws, though.) Now, let's think for a moment. What colour is the total opposite of blue? ORANGE! "Yeah, great." I thought. "How about The Roaring Tigers, painted black and orange..." But then I found the Knights of Gryphonne, and let's not forget about the Tigers Argent. "Scratch that. What Now?..." Something original was required. Something different. So then, after much consideration, I came up with 'The Cosmic Steeds'.

They'd be painted Hawk Turquoise and have Company Colours indicated by their helmets. They would conform to the Codex, and Sergeants would have red Chapter and squad markings. Here's some pictures of a test model:

As you can see, this Marine is a member of the First Squad, Second Company and Cosmic Steeds Chapter. I've got a background for them, but do not really want to show this as, to be honest, I'd like to hear what you have to say. Which should I go for, The Cosmic Steeds or The Knights of Gryphonne? Also, how big an army should I paint? Being totally insane, I was thinking about a whole reinforced Battle Company. That's about 220 Marines, including transports and tanks from the Armoury. Lots of tanks. But be truthfull with me - Would you do something like this, to this level of detail? Let me know! Is it to be orange or turquoise? It's your say.

Here's a picture of a Knight of Gryphonne Space Marine (taken from Bolter and Chainsword). What do you think now?

EDIT: I have since deleted these images. I have, however uploaded some new ones of the same model in my gallery.

Nice painting. I like the color scheme alot. Go for as big an army as you want. I think Cosmic steeds sounds like a cool chapter name.

I really like your color scheme and that paintjob is excellent. For the size, I'd say go with whatever you can feasibly do. A whole company would be very cool fluff-wise, and gives you a lot of options for making up an army list, which trust me, will come in handy after you get quite a few games under your belt with your standard list. You'll be pining for some variation, and having a full company to draw on could do just that. Start small though, and don't burn yourself out, but a full company on display would be a sight to see.

Beautifully clean painting there and a nice (and very different) different colour scheme. Good fluff too.

Ironically, they do. So do cheats.

Hi again.

If you're interested in painting turquoise, I'll make it no secret:

Undercoat: Skull White. (I just like a white undercoat.)

Base coat: 1/1 mix of Mordian Blue and Knarloc Green.

Wash: 1/1 mix of Asurmen Blue and Thraka Green.

Layer: Hawk Turquoise.

Highlight: 1/1 mix of Hawk Turquoise and Ice Blue.

Extreme Highlight: Ice Blue.

I'd imagine that this would work well for the Eldar Craftworld Iybraesil colour scheme.

Keep the comments coming - Thanks!

Forever alone

Cosmic Steeds is a silly name. You may as well call them Space Ponies (in Space).

The painting is a good job, but I was never a fan of turquoise.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Nice one, Cheese Elemental! Perhaps I should consider that option - Space Ponies... Who's thinking pink?

I love the colour scheme for the Cosmic steeds. But...the name...you gotta work on that.

Mabye, "Cosmic Stallions"? It sounds more...manly. Also, the banner, right now it looks like a 5-year-old girls dream, mabye more flailing hooves, raging painting fury or something? A little less, fairy like and more FAST and FURIOUS?

I thought about that... Way over a year ago, in fact. (God, do I have too much spare time? Nah!)

I thought about the Astral Stallions... But then, there was the Astral Claws Chapter... But I know what you mean, Emperors Faithful.

You know what, how about I just go with the Knights of Gryphonne, and leave turquoise for another army... Or would that just prove that I've wasted loads of time thinking about something for no reason?

Come on people! Have your say, and knock some sense into my head. (No, seriously, DON'T come knocking on my front door.)

Thanks.

…Other ideas? Hmmm... Thanks for all of those suggestions, Emperors Faithful. Even though I've thought loads about a new Chapter, I think it would be cool to go with the Knights of Gryphonne. Apparently, their Chapter home world was destroyed by Hive Fleet Leviathan, and so they embarked upon a crusade. (They're in the Codex: Space Marines, too.) To be truthful, I just don't want to think too much about something else right now. I've thought about how they might display all of the Codex markings, etc.

How about I save turquoise for another time? Thanks for showing interest in my evil schemes, by the way. I've been impressed by the awesome community on this site.

Cosmic.

That's a close one, Emperor's Faithful!... Next time, I tell you, next time... HA HA HA! It's all good fun. You know what? I'll paint up a model and post it on this site. Just like what I've done here. In the meantime, I'll be preparing for the bigger picture. Oh yes, lots and lots of de-flashing models.

Right, I'd better get doing stuff, then!

Once again, thanks!

Up your nose with a rubber hose.

Glad you chose Knights of Gryphonne Cosmic. I've liked them since Insignium Astartes came out. And check out what Chapterhouse Studios is making just in time for your project: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/245278.page
