I wanted to share with everyone my Moonscape and Blastscape project. Some of you may have seen some of this in other threads. The project is complete and here are the links to all four parts.

http://dspaintingblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/moonscape-and-blastscape-part-1.html
http://dspaintingblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/moonscape-and-blastscape-part-2.html
http://dspaintingblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/moonscape-and-blastscape-part-3.html
http://dspaintingblog.blogspot.com/2009/07/moonscape-and-blastscape-part-4.html

I really enjoyed this project and I must say I am pleased with the results. I really think that people should not discount the Blastscape set too quickly. I will agree that it is not much to look at in the bag but it does paint up well. The only thing I did to these models was fill them. They are, otherwise, right out of the bag.

Thanks for looking and I look forward to your feedback!

I am just trying to get my post count up so that people won't think I am a GW sock puppet.

Nicely done!

You even made the piece I was most looking forward to (and the most disappointed in) - the crashed pod - look pretty good

And the other pieces of crashed ship looks very nice!

Good stuff!

Great job of some dodgy terrain. A million times better than the efforts of my local GW staff.

Still looks like crap, decent paintjob or not.
IMHO: painting them was a waste of time.

By the way, I love your Necromunda/Inq 28mm sites! I have been inspired by them for years. When are you going to do some updates?

I don't think the fill is needed for the Moonscape. The laser burn and the meteor impacts don't really need it either. I think for the other three pieces it is a good idea. The pod and the space junk piece do have some thin spots. It really did not take much work to fill them. Painting took much longer.

I think they look great. The crashed pod looks fine and proves it is the contrast with the master resin piece that caused all the controversy. GW made a stupid error trying to pass that off as the real thing.

Kendoka, is right. They look like crap. Your paint job is amazing any if it was not for your ability to paint at a high level they would still look like crap.

Its like putting lipstick on a pig. At the end of the day its still a pig. My dad always had a saying. Do it right the first time cause if you don't, you'll just waist time polishing a terd.

I can't think of a better and more fitting time then now to use that saying.

Congrats on salvaging your money. You did a great job and your terrain looks much better. The fact is that 50% of the people out there will not be able to match your quality, or don't want to.

I'm not going to spend $20.00 on $2.00 worth of terrain just to spend another $15.00 trying to make it look like the original advertised picture. (and still not get the exact result.)

Anyway, super paint job, S*%T product.

Romeo,

Let me know if you want to see these in person. I can bring them out to Empire sometime.

But then again, you probably don't want to see them...;-)

This is actually an upgrade for me. Most of my terrain is litterally made of trash!

About to eat your Avatar...

I would like to see it (your scratch-built terrain) if you don't mind. I am sure a lot of Dakkites would really appreciate it as well.

If you can do this with that, I want to see what else you can do .

The P&M BLOG section is great if you want to post WIP stuff, but you won't get nearly as much feedback as in the P&M section.

Good job, but I have to join the rest of the "meh" crowd, I almost feel like those pieces don't deserve to be painted so nicely.

Really nice paintings , but i cant help feel bad that you need to spend $50 to make the poor quality terrains playable :/

No, just buy two sets from an online discounter, return them to the store, make a profit, then use the same online discounter to buy them again, thereby getting them for free (essentially).

And really, when you look at the quality, I did get what I (didn't) pay for.

Please remember that the $50 quote included the price of a Moonscape set and a Blastscape set. That is about $37 just for the GW stuff.

See there wouldn't have been as many complaints about the quality if they hadn't released the pictures of the better quality resins. But hey ho, maybe GW will learn from this mistake and release pictures of the actual product, or an equal quality resin . . .

There are plenty of people at GW to blame for this disaster. The first is the model designer. I would think that the designer would know the production plan for these pieces and they should have designed models for that type of production. The second person to blame is the production mamager that looked at the masters and did not see that a vacuum formed model based on those masters would not pass the sniff test. The third person is the marketing manager for using the masters in the adverts without waiting for a sample run to ensure quality. The four this the Chinese manufacturer for not pointing out that the production method selected cannot produce the desired product.

It is clear to me that the amount of detail and the hieght variation from the highs to lows means these are very hard to produce with vacuum forming. The issue is getting the right amount of heat and vacuum to create the piece without the plastic failing in the process. It is clear that they had this issue as evidenced by the thinness of the most dramatic pieces. Since this is only the second time GW has used this process I hope they do learn from their mistake. This one could have been so much better.

Well vacuum forming is probably the cheapest and best way of making these . . . it's just a shame that GW didn't realise that and so decided to go for too much detail, the moonscape works well because there is only minimal detail, whereas blastscape went for super detailed pieces . . . which is never going to work with vacuum forming . . .
