Okk so at my local gw they decided to start a new type of gaming for WHFB that was purely ship battles... IN THE SEA! So with many red shirts making thier awsome boats I thought I would make on of my own, and decided on making one for my upcomming warriors of chaos army...

I made its main structure from foam board and then did ALOT of cutting of balsa wood to make the wooden strips for the ship. Since its nurgle I decided I would glue it all together with hot glue since in the end I planned to make numerous slime drippings all around the ship... The cannon on the ship shoots... well I dont quite know but its got slime dripping from it.

The wood looks all crapily put together so some of you are probably thinking that its more orc like. However the fluff for my "Plague Carrier" is that all the corrosion of the ship and constant pushing and overflowing (which is quite clear on the model) of slime and w/e else nurgle has in mind, is pushing and dismantling the ships hull. If you look closely you can see just about everwhere on the model theres is either ooz coming from between wood and dripping down the side, or pushing out from under steps and out of ledges.

The front of the ship is square (some what odd) and has two huge spikes on it as well as a chaos symbol and a cow chain to it (with its heading going back as if the ships going forward and force/wind.. yeah. science made the cow blow the udder way)

Im not too sure if i like the chains or not, and I havent glued them on yet... Im also deciding whether to add a sail that looks are torn and stuff (thinking like the flying dutchman from Pirates of Car) but not sure yet.

Still has lots to add to it, tell me what you think and idea's would be quite appriciated!

GW put out a book called The General's Compendium a few years ago that included a very comprehensive set of naval combat rules. However, it shouldn't stop you from creating your own. The ship looks okay so far, but the cow needs some hanging entrails.

I think that looks really nice at the moment. However you are lacking the "chaos touch".
If you:
1)straightened the balsa wood up slightly (but not too much),
2)added more nurgle symbols,
3)glued some more tentacles to the side and deck of the ship,
4)added a few more of those "dripping pipes",
5)"slimed-up" the chains a bit,
6)gave it a couple of cannon holes on either side,
7)used a bit more hot glue for slime on the deck,
8)and even gave it a zombie crew.

....it would look much better than the red shirts' ships.

Have fun with it!! Experiment a little bit aswell!

Cheers,

Jack.

I would remove about the bottom half of the prow and angle it in towards the ship to make it more... ship like...

So it would look something like this:

|
\__

Rather than this:
|
|____

I would also mirror this to a lesser extent at the rear, perhaps sloping only the bottom 1/3rd of the hull. I would also extend the rear about 1-2 inches to accomodate this.

You might also want to think about extending the bridge back above the cabin... you can kind of see it in this pic:

And as for bits and pieces, if you can add perhaps some grates etc on the deck to lead down into the cargo spaces, as well as some masts and rigging, that would be quite cool.

You might be able to use the chains to "restrain" the mast. Though you could also use it as a kind of hand rail around the edge, almost as you have done now.

I am not entirely sure what a WH ship is supposed to look like, but I imagine that the more ship like it looks, the better

Well before anyone had a chance to reply i actually went back to working on it. I found many of the tentical parts from my chaos spawn boxes so i go like 7 or so of those added around the ship. I also added 2 more pipes to the top (made it look alot better)

@blightdron: Im still trying to look for some more nurgly symbols, Got to go buy more hot glue so i can add alot more of it (was original plan but am running out D:
As for adding cannons. I had originally planned to add two on each side but realized after i had it completed.. oh woops i forgot to add them... However i dont suppose it would look too bad if i greenstuffed in cannons so they were surrounded by a bunch of nurgly stuff so then theyre would be no holes.
@ silverMK2: I actually have some hatches made to add for a cock pit door. As for the redoing of back and front. i mite actually change that bottom piece on front (not liking the two giant spikes now) but will probably leave the back alone...

Thanks for suggestions guys, keep em comming

Take the marauder banner top off the front, it looks too much like the skull rune of khorne.
The cow doesn't deserve to be at the front of the ship, an open and festering daemonic mouth might be, spewing maggots and bile, but a dead cow? make a pile of corpses on it and include the cow or have it hanging rotten from a side.

I think the cow is rather cool.

I would take a look at pictures of old sail ships for ideas on detailing the hull etc in terms of gun ports, windows and places to attach rigging.

Oh... oh God, I hope that's glue oozing out of the pipe. Please, please paint it so people like me don't get the wrong idea.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

I might be stating the obvious but have you (and your group) looked at the old Man o War ships for inspiration?
Here is a pic of the Nurgle Fleet. They did most races, a quick google image search should find the rest
and Wikipedia can explain what on earth Man o War was/is......

HmmThanks for that man o war idea thing alex. I hadnt thought about it but looking at some pictures gave me some more ideas.

Well like i saidd before. I added alot more gw tentacles... and more pipes.

I also found my green stuff and decided to start on some details. I made the cow look rotted away in some places as well as bound to the front by random nurgle type stuff lol... I added in a cannon on each side and looking for more pipes to add a second to each. And ive also made a small stack of mucas/slime/nurgle cannon balls for the front cannon. And a cock pit latch. Will take pictures once i do a bit more.

Thanks for the ideas guys! keep em comming. really wanting to make the red shirts' boats crumble beneath mah wrath!

Added a bit more to the boat. Cannon on each side, Two more large back pipes, Random decay (rotting cows WOO), people being sucked into the boat ( want to do a bit more on this), latches with tentacles being held out, quite a few more tentacles and stuff all around the boat. I just took the ideas everyone gave me. Im probably going to pick up one of the little 9 dollar boxes of vampire counts skeletal people. Then greenstuff them into ghouls for the krew. Anymore suggestions you all might have would be greatly appriciated!

Ok so was quite pleased with the build of the model so i decided to start painting. I only used plain acyrlic paints... no special model paints as that would be a HUGE waste. I am no where near done with this bad boy. The green will be 2 layers. a dark green followed by a drybrush on the top of a lighter (some what radioactive looking) green. The Tentacles and spawn bits MITE be a different color although im not sure. The Pipes and cannons will be extremely corroded to the point where they look like they shouldnt be together still. the top part i will paint after the other parts are done. And I am making a sail that will be magnatized for transport purposes (plus i kinda like it without a sail )

Any ideas for painting the rest of this? or just thoughts? let me know what you think!

I would make the tentacles pink and blue so that you can tell them from the goo. And pink and blue so that some are pink, and some are blue just to give some colour to what is otherwise a rather rotted ship.

I would do the banners a dirty bone colour.

You might want to try and get some really watered down black paint for a wash to the planks to give them a bit more definition. Try it out on an unobtrusive portion of the boat in case it all goes wrong

I still think it would be better with a sail

But good work so far.

They look a bit too perfect. I'd drill some holes in them, add some fine sand and go to town with a craft knife. It'll give you a better texture for
weathering techniques and give that 'pitted rust' feel that you want.

Paintwise I would add more variation to the greens and definately paint the tentacles a different colour.
I'm still not 100% sold on the shape of the hull but it looks a little late to change that now.?.?
It's looking much better with a bit of paint, keep at it!

I think there are crow and vulture models that come with the giant, they would be cool.

A note on colour. Personally I'd avoid pink or blue or yellow or red for the following reason, they are the colours associated with the other chaos gods. Keep this in natural and unpleasant greens, browns and muted shades associated with decomposing and rotting, nothing bright or vibrant. Nurgle will thank you for it.

And paint those chains in solid rust effects.

Dark n dirty...

If you stick to browns/greens, you run the risk of not getting anything other than a rather flat looking model though.

A subtle pink or blue (or even vibrant, depending on the effect you go for) will give the eye something to rest on in the sea (no pun intended) of mottled colours.

I agree with Alex that the shape of the boat could do with some changing, but I guess if the builder likes it, that is all that matters

Hmmm I actually went with an orange for the tentacles. it contrasted really well and it seemed to go well with the green. As for the shape of the boat. In the pictures for some reason it seems WAY more box like then in person. It looks like a flipped house. However in person the corner pices between the straits and the triangle sections come out in a half circle giving it a more clean boat appearance. The change of two giant spikes ---> the giant ram type thing made the front look more boat like by far..

Any more suggestions greatly appriciated as the suggestion on diff color tentacles helped a ton :O !

I have no need for a boat, but this tread is making me want to go build one for some reason

And I honestly had not thought of orange for some reason, but I am glad that it fits.

Do you have any pictures of boats (or bits of boats) that you are kind of basing your design off?

That way we might be able to make better suggestions about how to progress

Not really ahah, just kinda going as i do. Plus kinda doing it as the gw people had theirs. they do look a tad different as youd imagine boats. Probably the biggest difference is size.

It cant be huge because you got multiple boats on a single table... gotta have deployment still, have room to move and shoot. etc.

I havent read the rules they made but they do involve some core infantry (very few) so I imagine some close combat which would also require some movement to get into...

Im not sure though. If i had to pick a boat i was most basing it off of... i would totally say flying dutchman from pirates of car. although it looks nothing like it... mainly because of limited size.

Well, one thing that I think would make this really pop out as a funtastic ship would be to add some cabin windows to the rear wall and sides of the raised cabin area. And of course a door from the cabin to the deck.

I would also add some stairs on either side of the deck to access the top section, and add some railings around the whole deck area.

Actually one thing i was really thinking about doing was adding one of the old (i dont even know where / when they from) warhamemr doors with the brick outlind and what not to the very back, think i should do that? And hmmm, what if i did do the window things in the back. sorta like i did the cannon? just an outline then i could have some tentacles comming out the side... think that would work?

I have no idea about the door, but yes, just the outline of the windows on the back would be cool.

As I say, the best place to get inspiration as to how to do up the boat is google image search. Look for pictures of sail ships and when you find something that looks cool, build it!

Yeaah i actually started out the project doing that... then i realized... not to many boats fit the scale im looking for and are infected by the powers of nurgle... BAH

Ok so ill probably go add those windows. Also realized. I has no wheel. luckily i got an old warhamemr wheel (not sure from what) but ill put that on a stand and make it work. I was originally going to use chaos vehicle sprew spikes for railing but only had one long one that would work cause of space marine head on other. Although i mite cut that off. since theres only space on each side for really one thing of railing it would work. If you guys come up with any more ideas let me know!

Haha, I guess I can see where you are coming from

Even though, as I have mentioned, I have absolutely no need for a warhammer boat, I may go and build one when I get home, I love this idea so much.

I start projects way too easily... *thinks of his half built burna boy stompa sitting on his desk at home...*

Ok, I have had a go at making a boat and it is far harder than I thought to make a nice curved shape

Though it may partly because I am far too Orky in my construction methods (cut twice, don't measure).

Kudos to you
