Off the shoulder of Orion

As promised, time to post the report for the second game of our campaign. Following the initial skirmish, the main forces deployed from their respective staging areas.
The marines forces, benefitting from their extra 400 points requisition won in the first battle sent out two 1200 point armies. The first secured Forge Precint Alpha, whilst the second 1200 point force deployed by orbital assault (marine special campaign rule) into Forge Precint Omega. The Imperial's knew how critical the defence of these two sites was to the ongoing war effort.

The Orks also split their forces into two equal armies. One quickly overran the virtually undefended Equatorial Hub food proceessing zone, capturing additional resources. The second greenskin army moved due north, eager to seize the rich gubbins of Forge Precint Omega.

As they entered the outskirts of the Forges they saw the marines making planetfall, and battle was joined....

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Guzmek pulled the handlebars to one side with a jerk, sending his Dethkopta swerving around a looming chimney stack. Below him the crowded hab-units and heat exchangers of the Forge Precinct flashed by in a grey, soot-streaked blur.
The ramshackle Ork skimmer weaved between slab-sided buildings and clattered over leering gargoyles and antennae nests. In front of him he could see the brutal outlines of the leading Ork vehicles as they crawled forward, smoke belching from crude exhausts.
Suddenly a flash of colour appeared between two ruined walls. A blue armoured vehicle came into view, the storm bolters on its hull tracking for targets.
“’Dere dey are boyz!” Shouted Guzmek over the din of the engine, “Da ‘Umies ‘ave turned up for a scrap – let’s give dem a stompin’ dey won’t forget!”
Tracer fire began to flash up from several buildings in front as the rest of the Marine force opened fire. Guzmek roared with glee as he pushed the throttle all the way forward and dived towards the Marine lines...

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The Orks mass for the charge - Kans and Mega Nobz move through the ruins and secure the first objective.

Lets see the 'Umies take this off us!

The Ork Heavy Hitter arrives and opens up with all guns...

The Marine gun line escapes completely unscathed – and prepares to return fire..

The Landraider blasts the Battlewagon apart, destroying the major Ork armoured threat and several boyz as a bonus.

The dreadnought, tactical and devastator squad line up the survivors. The ork mob takes further casualties and falls back

The Razorback blasts away a Killer Kan while the Terminators move into position

Meanwhile, Dethkoptas screen a trukk full of boyz as they move around the Marine flank and engage a lone Rhino..

The Ork forces move cautiously forward, wary of the massed Marine firepower after the losses of the first turn.

Meanwhile, a second trukk with the Warboss and another mob of Boyz races into cover on the opposite Marine flank, barely surviving the fire of the Marine dreadnought. They deploy into nearby ruins from the immobilised vehilcle.

Across the field, the Dethkoptas destroy the flank Rhino and clear the way for the trukk mob to engage the Marines.
In a single round of abysmal Marine luck and spectacular Ork rolling, the devastator squad completely miss the advancing Killa Kans who in turn destroy the dreadnought.

The Warboss mob rolls superb difficult terrain tests and storms through the building they sheltered behind to shred the tactical squad..

The remaining battlewagon mob rally and surge forward, along with the Mega Nobz. The Marines continue to roll terrible dice as the Orks close in...

The Captain and retinue counter charge the Orks. A desperate battle erupts between the Warboss, Marine commander and their respective retinues.

Both sides grind the other down, until only a handful of terminators remains.

The Marine captain emerges victoruis from the close combat, but only two terminators remain with him

More tremendous Ork rolling sees the threat of the devastator squad almost totally removed by a salvo or Dethkopta rokkits. Dismayed by his brother’s demise, the melta gunner misses the Killa Kans and Mega Nobz as they close in..

The second boyz mob in their trukk ram the Razorback and immobilise it, before the Death Koptas finish it off. (Why do my 2nd Ed Blood Angels always come out hot pink in these photos?)

The battlewagon mob reaches the final defence line and overruns the remaining devestators

The remaining terminators manage to heroically stem the Ork tide in the final turn. The Landraider surges forward to contest the Marine objective just as the second Ork trukk and Battlewagon mobs reach it.

The final objective is contested, but in their haste, the Orks have left their own objective untended...
Doh!

Final Result
1 Objective Contested
1 Objective Unclaimed
Draw!

Captain Boydus Maximus counts the cost of stemming the Ork attack

The Orks find their Warboss knitting his wounds with medi-squigs. "Call da uvver boyz and let em know - there's plenty of 'Umies here for stompin!"

Bloodied but unbroken, the Marine forces dig in and prepare to repel the inevitable Ork second wave....as the Orks prepare their next attack....

Nice one, I enjoyed that. The backstory gave the game a good context, and the models were very well painted. Just a suggestion - it would have been good to have some broader shots to give an idea of how the battle was going as a whole, not just the close-ups.

Thanks for the comments - I will get the next battle posted before too long.

Napalm,
The Battlewagon is based on the Italeri 1/35th "Buffalo" kit. I built two battlewagons from varients of this model before the GW version came out.
