Howdy,

We'll be posting a few bonus episodes over the next 24 hours or so of interviews we conducted while at GenCon 2009. The first bonus episode is up now.

Please let us know what you think!

== Bonus Ep 1 ==
While at Gencon 2009 we managed to get a few interviews that we thought would be best sent out in 'unofficial' bonus episodes. In our first bonus episode we start off with the creators of Exillis, the new hybrid game that brings the creative world of hobby wargaming together with the power of computer-aided combat.

Then we chat with Curt Covert of Smirk and Dagger to hear about his latest project and how it did at GenCon.

Finally Craig and Raef talk with the folks at Armorcast and learn what they've been up to recently.

== Bonus Ep 2 ==
In part 2 of our bonus GenCon episodes we interview the folks at Wyrd Miniatures and discuss their new miniature skirmish game "Malifaux." Malifaux premiered at GenCon 2009 and features many innovations including card, not dice, driven mechanics in a setting that is as unique as it is bizarre.

Join us as we get to know the folks that bring you a game that features cowboys, mechanical spiders, flying pigs, and undead hookers. (no, they don’t play rugby)

== Bonus Ep 3 ==
In part 3 of our bonus GenCon episodes we interview Flying Frog Productions and discuss new expansions to Last Night On Earth, A Touch of Evil, and some new products coming soon.

But first the D6G team interviews Wells Expeditions about Arcane Legions at GenCon. How did the game's launch go? What's coming next for this new product?

I was hoping you guys would do an Ex-illis interview. I was all excited about arcane legions and malifaux but Ex-illis was the highlight of my con experience. Is anyone from the d6g playing in the beta? Are you guys planning a review?

The official D6G sherpa (http://twitpic.com/dx29q) did get into the beta and pick up a kit there. I'm planning to help him test it out. So more news will follow on this game as it develops.

I doubt we'll do a review on "the beta" because that's not really fair to the company, but I'll definitly keep you up to date with our experiences with it.

That's good to hear, I'm really hoping this game does well. Not to mention, I figured if any of you guys could appreciate this game's "innovation" it would be you.

Russ,

I couldn't tell from the interview about Ex-illis, but how exactly does the computer track where the models on the table are?

Does it use some sort of camera or is there some sort of sensor built into the board or each mini?

Or does it not track the actual position of the models but rather just calculates attacks and damage?

If the latter is true, how do you know which models in the unit have more experience, or is that handled only on a unit by unit basis?

Good questions Yak. The board with the miniatures is more strategic than tactical. It's divided into 9"x9" squares. When you deploy, you tell the computer which squares you are putting each unit into.

Then, when it is your turn, the computer shows you a unit to activate, and which other squares are in range to move to based on the unit's stats. You click where you want to move the unit, and then also move the models on the table.

If there is fighting to be done in a square, then the computer will handle that, but you get some choices as to how your unit will attack.

I think the best way to think of it is that the miniatures show the strategic positions, and the computer handles the tactical elements. There is no "my vt. sgt is positioned within 1" of 3 models so he fights them". It's more "My cav is now in the same square with your dragon, let's look at the computer and see how the fight goes" Or "my archers can shoot arrows at your infantry 2 squares away, I tell the computer to do that: oh look, it says you loose to guys due to the arrows."

It's more advanced than that, you have different attack styles and options, but thats the basic jist. I'll know more next week after I try a beta game with our "sherpa" who managed to pick up a copy.

The upside: I am always interested in how these games come from someone's head to the tabletop and the creativity behind the games. The Flying Frog segment was a hoot.

The downside: More gamer crack for us magpies.

I think I need to change my sig to:
