Subject: The D6 Generation Episode 37: Rogue Trader RPG Interview & Detailed Review of Arcane Legions

Highlights this episode include a Rogue Trader RPG interview and a detailed review of Arcane legions.
First we interview Ross Watson, Fantasy Flight Games' lead man on the Warhammer 40,000 themed RPG's Dark Heresy and the new "Rogue Trader." We find out what to expect in this new edition to the 40k RPG line up.
Later the D6G team gets into the details on exactly how the new hybrid game Arcane Legions works. We've seen the miniatures and played the game and we're ready to share our thoughts.
All that and our usual 'not too horrible' humor, with features such as:
- When Wives Attack
- The Hollywood Minute
- Achivements in Gaming
- The Score
- & More
[Note: We know our shows are long, so now we've added time offsets to help you find the major segments quickly. See the show notes on our web page]

I love all the Dark Heresy books. FFG has done a good job managing the license. I'm very excited about Rogue Trader.
Good episode as usual guys. Thanks.

I can do only second that, but I'd go for great episode rather then just good. But then again it's just me.

I just started the show, and I'm very excited to get to the FF interview, but I had to stop and say that I hereby request that the D6G change it's tagline to "We're not here to thank our nipples."
Russ, I can't believe you let HD provoke you to say that! You're supposed to be the serious one!

Ooooh.... those are really nice. I LOVE the gallows.
Reminds me of a terrain commission I did ages ago for someone who did Wild West gaming of a mine shaft. I recommend adding a boarded up gold mine for additional Western fun!
Thanks for doing the espionage, Russ. Whose game room is that in?

Our friend Andy did the covert photo taking while Craig was distracted with GM duties of the game.
We were playing in "The Game Castle," a store with a lot of table space set up for miniature war games located in Londonderry, NH.

I just wanted to say that I love The Score. Just like When Wives Attack, I don't know of any other podcast that services these particular topics. Thanks Ken.
I love how D6G is really a string of different podcasts. Since each segment has a distinct focus, it makes it all feel like a complete package. It's almost like getting a whole gaming radio station in each download rather than one show. Also it breaks up the listening, which is nice for those of us who listen to podcasts in small chunks.

This is more for show 36 (I'm a bit behind...)... Another Wild West minis game you might want to check out is Pinnacle's Great Rail Wars. It's firmly a 'wargame' although the core system was recast later as the Savage Worlds RPG system.
It's been a while since I read it, so this is all from memory.
The setting is their Deadlands setting, so it's the 'Weird West.' One thing to note is that the majority of the stuff is 'Western' or 'Western but twisted.' So no 'Orks' generally, more mythological beasties that fit the theme.
Initiative is card based. Every squad or solo character is dealt a card. Some have a trait that allows them to get a second card and act on the highest. Characters have relatively simple stats rated by die types from d4 to d12 with d6 being average.
Squad characters die quickly, solo characters are tough to kill.
The scope of the game is closer to 40k than Inquisitor. Maybe a bit bigger than Necromunda. Despite the name, there's no rules for trains in the main book: the 'rails' are the efforts to build a railway from coast to coast and various factions are fighting to be the first to do so.
Thee are rules for some 'vehicles' and steampunk tech ranging from steam velocipedes to massive Steam Tanks in addition tot he ubiquitous horse.
They sold their own minis, but I'm not sure if they're still widely available.
It was a neat game. Had some neat ideas like cannons were brutal but effectively immobile.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

Wonderful interview with Ross Watson. I was a bit sort of 'meh' on Rogue Trader, seeing it as the last step on the path before the third part of the 40K RPG lineup.
Having listened to the interview though I'm really looking forward to it. Sounds like heaps of fun.
And they couldn't get any info out of him for the third game, but it appears GenCon will hold more info.

I really enjoyed the Score this week, well done Ken, its the first segment I have actually listened to , rewound and listened to again. Tears in my eyes at the Henry V music, such a brilliant film and one of my favorite plays. I also loved Plunkett and Mclean which is a great film and was the first film I bought on DVD many years ago. Liv Tyler in it looking georgeous .
Anyway fab Ken and keep up the great work

Thank you , Owen!
I have to say The Score was quite a good listen this episode and Plunkett and McLean is a great film.
I also like the scenery pics from Gut Shot. I build scenery for my groups Mordheim games and I like to see other folks work to find(steal) ideas.

Just finished listening to the epic episode while on holiday in sunny Scotland.
Thanks for another great one guys!
Particular thanks for thereview of Arcane Legions. I really want to love this game for various reasons. Firstly because its cheap, and I like cheap! Second, because I can buy it without adding to my painting backlog. So, being put off by the anachronsitic background is a bit of a bummer for me!
Hearing that Craig is really engaged by the fluff is very encouraging. If the starter pack comes with a nce, full colour rule book (I too am really disappointed with monochromatic codices) and the fluff can get me hooked (I admit it has potential - steam powered Romans, seriously!), then I'm sold. We'll see.

Another great show! Loved the arcane legions Review, i'm definitely trying to get that @ gen con. The one thing that is funny to me about the way the game is being received is that no one has a problem with steam powered Romans, minataurs, mummys or animated Terra cota (sp?) warriors. What makes the game unrealistic is the Romans and Hahn fighting... I for one can get over that small stretching of reality.

What a great show. Really loved it.
The Rogue Trader interview with Ross was very exciting. I will buy my copy ASAP (probably not the commemoriative copy). I play the Dark Heresy RPG occasionally, but I would buy these books just for the fluff. They are beautiful.
Arcane Legions isn't my style (The faux historical isnt my thing), but I feel like I have the basics of the game now, and will look for it at Gencon- maybe to play a demo if it doesnt look to horrible.
I'll look forward to seeing you all in Indy. I'll be the one rolling around in a big pile of Space Hulk game pieces
That game was chock full of Innovative Mechanics.

If you want a good look at the Arcane Legions components we were trying to describe in Ep 37, check out the official YouTube videos that Wells Expeditions has just released: http://bit.ly/H9Av1
They even have actors with costumes. (Sure, a bit cheesy, but A for effort no?)

Cheesier than the hat-rack at a Packers game, but actually a lot of fun to watch. I think it's a nice touch.

Loved those videos. Wasn't that Craig in the armour? Seriously though, you've got to enjoy something like that, that doesn't take itself too seriously.
Regarding the issue "well if we can have <insert magic/ monster> why can't we have Chinese vs. Romans?" I don't disagree. My finding it a problem is a purely personal thing. For some reason I can accept "made up race A" versus "made up race B" and all sorts of things that are impossible in real life for the sake of a good game or fantasy tale. But if something is "supposed to be" Romans and something is "supposed to be" Chinese, then unless these is some sort of distortion of the space/time continuum (which, to be honest I could accept if its good enough in the fluff) it just jars a little. Its one of those stupid gamer foibles that causes me to fancy one game and not another.
Looking at those videos gave me a good idea of the quality of the components too, and to be frank they do look "not too horrible". If the UK £ price in anyway corresponds to the advertised US $ price I can forsee getting hold of this game. I'm always a sucker for a new game, even if I may not end up playing it a lot, and at the price quoted it is probably cheaper to invest in this entire game than to buy a single new unit for 40k or Hordesmachine! It would almost seem rude not to!
