Hi All –
I pulled this from a question thread of mine to give it it's own title.
My idea is to kitbash an Imperial Fortress City Wall together. I want to make it modular to fit either the long or short length of a 4' x 8' table.
I liked the Bastion wall shown in the Planetstrike book but I wanted something taller and more elaborate.
Here's a pic of the components laid side-by-side (4'-1" total width) and a close-up of the Aquila Gate.
I plan to fill in the gothic arches with plasticard and add some gun ports. The Bastion Towers will be topped with the single barrel gun (forget the name) from the kit and the Aquila Towers will have the Quad guns from the Defense Line.
I want to make the opening in th Aquila Towers modular for various items (See the 2nd Ed Marine "Statue" in the pic?) and weapons like more guns and even a missile rack. The "Bridge" connecting the Aquila Towers will be centered between the two with balconies facing in both directions (to taunt the attacking hordes or to quell the citizen unrest). Oh, the COD panels at the base of the Aquila Towers will be mostly the "skull arches" to represent the Imperium being "supported" by the death of it's citizens.
Also, the back of the Bastion Tower will have the Eagle Door from the COD Sanctum Kit at the base (facing the city) and to the top gun platform to represent the elevator shaft. Other than that, the City Side will duplicate the Outside (after all, sometimes you need to keep things IN as well as OUT ... you never know when the citizens will fall to Chaos !!).
Any C&C is welcome !!

Awesome project!!! It is coming along nicely, can't wait to see how it progresses. How are you plannign to base the piece(s)?
btw, I have a similar project in the works: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/251152.page
so I'll be watching for ideas.
Good stuff.

I suggest magnetizing the big sections or some such. That way you can run missions where you can blast away walls...
great idea though!

Magnetising could be a very good idea - I'd be dubious about building it all as one long fixed wall, it would be very difficult to store and transport, and difficult to reinforce internally to prevent accidental breakage. And designed right, it would allow you multiple layouts.
I like the current layout. An armoured door might be a nice optional (i.e. magnetised) addition for the arch.

Hi -
Thanks for the encouragement and the suggestions.
I am planning on magnetizing the walls to maintain the modularity and make the beast easier to store. In fact, I have an idea of also using a metal "L-clip" at the top that will grab onto the adjacent section to keep it tight and in line from segment to segment.
Warboss, great idea to have blasted wall insert, too. I'll have plenty left to use from all the Shrine kits I've gotten. Thanks for that spark.
There will be a huge operable blast door in the gateway. It will separate in the center and each half will slide into an Aquila Tower. I may also make the smaller front doors on the Aquila Towers operable to reveal hidden weapons.
Ok, kids are in bed and I'm off to "sniff glue" Hopefully I'll get far enough to post an update.
BTW, CTGamer, I'm in CT, too (Northern). I really like what you have going on with your City Wall !! I wish I had that many Necromunda Bulkheads.

Wow, I love it! I thought about doing something like that, but financially, it'd never fly. You know what it needs? Those 3-up Space Marines that GW puts on all of their buildings...why they haven't sold them yet is beyond me....

Looks like a great idea! Maybie make them a bit bulkier to look armoured? I think the magnetising idea would work really well as you could make a ruined/blasted section for each full section so when people destroy a peice of wall you can replace it with some rubble.
Would be good as a wall infront of a massive bastion or cathedral.

Well, not nearly the productive weekend I thought it would be. Also a couple of set backs as I try to figure out how to add depth to the walls without burning through tons of COD panels. Been spending a lot of time on the Evergreen and Plastruct plasticard styrene websites !! Of course, being there just gave me too many ideas for other projects <<sigh>> !!
@ Granesh - The "financial' aspect is why I'm re-thinking the depth and city side of the wall. And I agree with you on the 3-up marine statues !! Those are perfect and I would scoop those up if GW ever produced them !! I have one of the Sideshow Toys Space Marines they produced years ago but it just isn't the same as GW's "Silent Guard" posed ones. The one I have is a little too dramatically posed and I'm not sure I want to paint over it (yet). Then again, it does make for a great stand-alone staue. Too bad they go for big $$ on Ebay or I'd get other, differently posed ones.
@ Great Unclean One - The windowss will be filled with plasticard to make the arches "solid" and read as a huge continuous wall broken only by some gun ports. I was considering adding buttresses or reinforcing spines between each section but, IMO, it took away the continuity of the arches. Maybe if I try something thinner?
Thanks for the ideas and comments !!

That thing is 26 CoD panels across. That's friggin' huge. My largest building has is 8 panels wide, and it's a big building. That thing's gotta be damn near 40" across.

I like the way this looks. I am a fan of the REALLY big building and fortress Ideas.
I would try suggesting Foam Core for the City side of the wall, to add the depth you are looking for but sadly that is an expensive item in my book. Small Sheets around where I live go for 5 or 6 bucks and thy are only 3' x 2'
I am not sure if I am reading into what you are saying right thought. When you say depth, I get the idea of making the wall thicker. and what I would do is lay 4 sheets of foam core down and work from there, kind of like cutting out a stencil of the walls and windows, glue them together and then add another CoD wall to the back. Maybe some thin Plasticard over the edges of the Foam Core to cover up the foam center and make it look more, put-together so to speak.
I hope that is what you were intending when you meant depth. I hope what I said was helpful and not just a Spam of Useless Junk lmao. I will follow you through this project because I am curious ^__^
Good luck Myrthe

Plastruct has I-Beam structural supports, Place those the the 'seams' of your wall where the panels meet for added structural strength. They also have trusses that can be used for long spans between walls.
