So I've started an IG army (surprise surprise) and I've themed it as a naval regiment, tasked with attacking large space stations etc. So in effort to tie this all together, I have been thinking of making a cargo bay/hanger game board. I would like to know if anyone has seen anything similar? I figure I'd need plenty of containers, parked ships, fuel canisters, heavy lifters, etc, and so I'm going to start looking for things that would fit.

Anyone have any ideas or seen things that may fit?

Thanks

never seen such a beast, but i could imagine that you could use docked orbital landers as los blocking terrain, have catwalks between service towers, etc. etc.

Are you any good with electrics?
No cargo bay/hanger would be complete without a lit up runway, warning lights etc

Also, watch Starwars if you have never seen it or rewatch it and take notes/sketches.
Plenty of inspiration there.

I'm sure this has been around the block, but you may want to look at this 3D Space Hulk for inspiration. the textures and techniques may translate nicely.

Purely space stations, or would you also look at maritime docks? Could be interesting.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

Yay another reason to watch Star Wars again! Yeah I'll def look at the movies for inspiration, especially (unfortunately) the latest one with the assault on the docking bay. I want it to be big enough that vehicles could roll through and fit in, both physically and fluff-ly.

As far as a maritime dock, I agree that would be interesting, but that, alas, is a project for another person or another day.

The catwalks would be cool in making it a little more varied. Maybe have areas that are infantry only? Like hallways?

I was thinking of doing a space port board. It would have craters, overturned plastic plates as launch/landing pads, cranes, trucks, and these puppies as shuttles.

THe Cobra Gunship toy from the new GI Joe movie would also make a good imperial shuttle.

I've wanted to do a board like this for a long time, good to see someone else accomplishing it! The best idea I have is play the Death Star level on Star Wars: Battlefront 2. I think there's a hangar level in The Force Unleashed. I know the company that makes AT-43 makes a great steel storage unit, and the battlefield accessory sprue would work well too. As for space ships, a Valkyrie would look good. If the Forge World stuff wasn't so expensive, I'd do a whole hangar of Arvus lighters and Aquilla Landers. Hope I've helped a bit, I'm going to watch this intently...

Try looking for interior shots of an aircraft carrier's hanger deck. Lots of pipes everywhere, various space ships, crates, carts etc.

You could also make it multi-level by having gantry ways and cranes 'suspended' from the 'ceiling' (which is to say, build a couple of frames to go above) that would be accessible COD style. Likewise, control towers or a main control center for the shuttlebay/docking station (i.e. 'forts') airlocks and 'jefferies tubes' (access tubes) to represent hidden deployment/'deep striking', maybe some kind of space 'drydock' where a ship is under repair, surrounded by lots of equipment.

Oh, in addition to palates of stuff, you're going to want some kind of transport truck or forklift-like vehicles around (I'm thinking munitions carriers like on air bases, forklifts, or in sci-fi speak, maglev hover transports for gear etc.). They could be objectives or obstacles or even targets (get a penetrating hit and blow 'em up to affect the opponent).

Look at some Star Trek stuff as well; anything involving the shuttle bays. And try to get a hold of that BFG magazine rule booklet on boarding actions etc.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

If you've not read it, find a copy of The Guns of Tanith; it has Gaunt's Ghosts assaulting a gas mining facility and brought loads of ideas into my head for gaming boards. Some areas would have to be wide open for ships to land on; others would be cranes, walkways, crates, cargo containers etc.

Oh. For some scenery, Forge World does cool sentinel loaders (http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/sentpl.htm) if you're feeling rich

I don't know why but when someone says 'hanger bay' Cairo Station from the first level of Halo 2 always springs to mind. Plenty of long/ruined corridors and hangers with catwalks and parked Pelican Gunships.

To quote the Channel 4 show, Peep Show: "I'm cancelling out of shame, like my subscription to White Dwarf"

Hi,

I'm new to the forums but I've been thinking about making a cargo hold board for ages too. heres a crude sketch of what I had in mind (its not to scale!).

i was thinking along the lines of some sort of civilian vessel that has been commandeered by the imperium in desperate times. i was planning on making all the doors open and close (hopefully electronically if i can work it out) I was hoping to make them wide enough for a Valkyrie to fly through but it might get a bit big so maybe wide enough for a tank to roll through.
the central door in the floor is going to be big enough for a thunderhawk to drop through too so I can use it as a drop ship for either my SM or IG
the block on the right with the two garage style doors is to house a couple of hellhound incase any xenos make it on board.
the walkway along the top is going to be wide enough for tanks too and i have scavenged some old bike gears and chain for a working lift in the rear right corner.
thinking about a huge crane overhead too but this wasn't part of my original idea.
there will also be crawl spaces under the floor (cut into polystyrene in a similar way to making trenches) covered with squares of mesh for easy access.
throw a few utility vehicles and shipping crates (anyone know where i can get these or a good way to make them?) around the cargo bay floor to block los and movement and it should be fairly versatile.

I plan to eventually create the entire ship as I have already started work on a control room and am currently collecting all sorts fo stuff for the engine room and torpedo bay in the front. (the general shape will be similar to BFG imperial ships.)

hope this gives you some ideas!

look around on the nets for papercraft cargo crates. I found lots of good stuff in papercraft form. Failing that, i think its armorcast who makes some cargo containers in resin.
