Holy begusus! thats alot of SH in one book.

Its looking great so far, the yellow hazard stripes are too stripey or something though, ts hard on the eyes a bit I think.

But that is a very minor comment this is a great poject you're undertaking. Thank you and I look forward to seeing more and also how your 3-D board comes out, I was following your blog for awhile.

That looks really good.
Good of you to include the odd-ball WD tiles.

I do like the new tiles-set used in the other thread a bit more. Perhaps a collaborative effort (your excellent groundwork combined with the new maps)?

Downloaded and had a quick scan through - all I can say is thanks very much man! I love the way that the maps are laid out so simply (you're absolutely right - much easier to pick out quickly) and the fact that you have included the scans of all the WD board sections as well. I have been thinking of writing my own campaigns for Hulk and tbh rather than collecting any more 40k armies I think I will be buying new termies only for the forseeable future in order to do as many different campaigns as possible and this is a great inspiration. I so look forward to seeing the finished product!

Your Hulk Archive belongs on the Games Workshop Web site.

I am concerned with the scans of tiles and reprinting of magazine articles in your file. Reading about GW reactions to use of their material on the Internet, will you be able to publish a final version without any roadblocks from GW legal armies?

Once again, you have accomplished a great job.

I just joined today! All so I could say: Love the file! so easy to read, also love how you added the extra tiles that were available in WD! It allows people who don't have the tiles to play all the scenarios. Are you doing to do all the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, WD and Citadel Journal missions (are there citadel journal missions?) in this Tome of the Emperors Righteous Purge of Space Hulks?

Great job HF!

I wish I had more time on my hands currently to do some real proofing for you.

One other benefit about not using the 'new' Hulk tile artwork is that there is less chance that you'll ever be on GW legal's radar (as I have a feeling that newer map editor is going to eventually earn their ire).

@Hellfury - I think this is a great idea, and I applaud your efforts so far. As a long time Spulk fan myself, my mind immediately went to the same place. But there is no sense duplicating efforts, when yours looks so very good.

I'm not sure what you want by way of proofreading though. Are you looking for spelling/grammar checking? Or something else?

As far as feedback goes, again, I am not sure what you are looking for. I mean, what you have so far looks really good. The tiles you are using in the maps are perfect. They are clean and very easy to look at. I disagree with another forum member about the hazard graphic - I rather like it. But over all it is a good looking document. A suggestion I have is to offer two different documents once its finished - a plain one for ease of printing, and a graphics rich one for online viewing. An option for booklet formatting/printing might be appreciated as well. Again though, all and all, this looks really good as is.

I am working on original-art tiles for the older edition tiles done up in the new style. I'll post them as they are finished. These are 100% original artwork, so there will be no fear of any kind of infringement if you want to include them with your archive. I am hoping to have some finished by this weekend.

Regardless, this is a great project - and I look forward to seeing it completed.

Hellfury,

Very, VERY nice work! In a word, awesome!

Thank you for undertaking this. It's a lot of work, and truly a labor of love. I'm pretty new to boardgaming and totally new to Space Hulk. Bought the new version and desperately tried to find older material online... it's a mess, what's out there. The Archive clears up the mess for sure!

If I may add a very few comments... perhaps this is the kind of feedback you're hoping to get?

Living in the US, I do not have A4 paper/printer. Is there any way you can "refit" the Defilement of Honour Air Vent pieces on a secondary page to fit for 8.5" x 11" printing? For safety's sake, keeping the artwork within an 8 x 10" (~203mm x 254mm) area will ensure that printers with a wide margin should be perfectly fine.

Obviously, this would be easier to proof by printing and reading a hardcopy. But I also understand your wish to protect the document until it is done, too. Is there any chance you can provide a text-only extract from the file? I would be glad to spell check it and read it through for clarity, as I am sure others would do also. It helps to have more eyes on the text.

On page 25, should the CAT icons be perfectly round circles? I measure them at 1.68 x 1.54 inches (42.7 x 39.1 mm), which is a flatter, wider oval shape.

When you are complete, do you have the capability to include hyperlinks in the document (such as clicking on a table of contents link, to jump to that page)? If not, I would gladly edit that in to add it to the document. (In "real life" I work with Adobe CS4 as a production artist, and can easily help out there, if you wish).

Finally, you may wish to output a grayscale only version, for folks trying to conserve even more ink. This adds one more element to consider, however, and that is some of the maps use color to indicate specific features. Colors do not always translate well to grayscale. You might have a red box and an orange box that become the same shade of gray in print, making those shades on the map indistinguishable from one another... perhaps in those instances you can add the word "red" or "orange" beside them to ensure that these items are readable in a grayscale output. Another benefit of that is it can help people who have certain types of color-blindness.

Do let us know how you progress and what else you need! And if I can assist, feel free to contact me as well. This project needed to be made, and it's nice to see that high-quality work is being done on it by someone who cares so much!

James

Quick question:
Will you be adding in playtested custom missions that you think would be worthy of being added? WWW.boardgamegeek.com has people posting custom missions and 3ed tiles for the older expansion and WD tiles.
Thanks again!

Had some reading time... found only 3 genuine typos. The remainder are "style differences" like honor vs honour (US vs UK spelling) that don't count. (It's possible that the third typo is also a US/UK item... I'm not certain there.

1
The Defilement of Honour was different, being equipped with a functioning engine room of sorts, as well as an ancient navigational computer in control of it’s (correction: its) course programmed in some distant millennia.

2
The Vengeful Blade would take a (correction: at) least a day, maybe more, to destroy the space hulk.

3
For brief seconds the tiny projectile traced a graceful, spiralling (correction: spiraling) trajectory between the two vessels before puncturing the skin of the Sword of Halcyon.

[Edit] File voluntarily removed as a preemptive measure before GW legal BS knocks on dakka's door.[/edit]

@Hellfury,

You're welcome!

I agree about the "additional work" part... with a project is this big , no need to add on to it.

If there's any assistance I can offer, let me know. December is a slow month for me and I'd be glad to lend a hand. If you want to send a mission file by email and let me know your "style" preferences, I'd be pleased to format one to match and send back to you. Even one at a time, over a few months, can be worthwhile (slow and steady!). If you think it's worthwhile, be happy to contribute.

Re: The Defilement tiles - it's not actually the tiles that I was referring to (*my error!*). It's the paper size. The sheet they are on is an A4 sheet, which means some part of the printout will be cut off if sent to an 8.5 x 11 page. I've made an 8.5 x 11 version that doesn't re-size the tiles themselves, and attached it, to show you what I mean. Feel free to use it if you wish!

It is a US/UK item. Spiralling is the UK spelling.

Hellfury,

I posted a similar message in the rules archive thread but I just wanted to post, again, my sincere gratitude to you for embarking on this project. Put simply, I would put the value of this project, once complete, at equal to the value of the 3rd edition release. It's simply fantastic to have all the missions and rules compiled in two easy volumes. It's extremely exciting and I am in awe at your efforts. Thank you so much, if there's anything beyond proofreading that we can do to help, please let us know.

This is awesome.

GW shutting down brilliant projects like this literally makes me feel nauseous. What the feth is their problem? Look, if you want to put this book out, put it out, I'll buy it. But just shutting it down, for spite? You're shutting down your fanbase. For feth's sake.

Unfortunately, IP laws are such that GW MUST pursue any and all IP violations, lest they risk the IP being lost and going into public domain. That's just the way it works. It isn't a matter of GW reprinting the WD issues or not. I worked briefly in museum collections and archiving, and study it as my unofficial minor in University. Archiving is important, and props for doing so. It does suck though when legal obligations get in the way of preservation.

Best of luck with the Archive, and I hope it can circulate long enough to make it to the fanbase before GW is forced to shut it down.
