I had a blog. S'bout a small campaign for a couple of friends, I'd been doing it for two months. And then google wanted me to create a google account to service the blog from.

Now, I have my own email account. My work email account. My work email account for when I'm direct representing our current client. And an account relating to my other hobby (climbing).

I do not want to create another blasted account just to service a blog. The blog worked fine for two months from my hotmail, why must it now be changed ? Is there one technical reason why, if I log on using hotmail instead of another, new, google, account, that the entire interweb will come crashing down and consume us all in a firey apocalypse ?

I didn't think so.

I get this with the f&^% phone companies as well. I do not want more text messages. It is a TELEPHONE, I use it to talk to people. Can I swap some of my 200 free texts for more airtime minutes ? No. But I can have more free texts.

I know that it is because I'm 41 this year that these things wind me up. I know that I can create the new google account in seconds and then just leave it 'on' for when I blog. but really, there is no need for it.

http://devosIV.blogspot.com

No more. either let me log in as me or it can sit there in the ether for ever, just taking up space.

I'm feelin' ya. It seems you can't do a fething thing on the internet without signing up, coming up with a username and password and then being barraged with surveys and crap. At least Firefox is good about preventing pop-ups. Damn, I hate the computers. (I'm 43, and didn't own one until I was 28.)

Just buy your own domain and server space from your ISP.

Yeah but, but, but:

Blogger still 'belongs' to goggle, so how do I get 'my' blog off of them ?

And I do all of this a work (Ssshhh). How do even find out who the ISP is ? Can I just buy domain space off Tesco/AOL/Tscalli/whoever ? Is a one off cost or a subscription ?

I'd also just like thank all of you for listening to my rant.

Thank you.

I pay £3.90 per month on top of my broadband subscription to Zen Internet for a domain name and server space.

There was a one-off fee (£15?) to buy the domain name and there is probably a renewal fee -- I don't know if it's annual.

These kind of fees aren't much in terms of my household budget, however I know they can be onerous if you are a penniless student.

The advantage of Google is it's free, and that means you have to put up with their system.

ISP is Internet Service Provider, the people you pay for internet.

But this isn't a 40K forum though ? (at least that's what it says in the sticky at the top of the page)

Blogger is free. If you don't like them, don't use them. Google provides tons of service to their end users for free.

This rant is silly. Next you'll be telling us about those damned kids with their texting while on your lawn or something.

PS: From Google Mail, you can set up all your e-mails on all your other accounts to receive and send e-mails from one location. I use my Gmail account to respond to work, school, and two different personal accounts. I also use one just for spam that sends everything to the trash bin. If you like, I can help you set one of these types of accounts up.

I realise that, it just didn't seem if you knew the abriviation. Ask the IT department anyway, but try not to make it seem like you're spending time at work to do it, rather that you're trying to do it at home and need a bit of help and would prefer to talk to someone in person about it rather than a helpdesk that's most likely outsourced. Basically, you're just asking them for help and it should be fine. If you don't want to do that then try the ISP you use for internet at your home, or the above suggestion.

Edit: I misread you're last message I responded to.
Kind of makes this post useless now as well

What you clearly need todo is get a nail and a board. Drive the nail through the end fo the board. then go to Google headquarters.

After that you'll know what to do...

The Google blogging service is free, therefore Google may attach whatever conditions they see fit to it's usage and you really have no course for complaint.

Pay for a decent blogging service and stop being a freetard.

I don't get the complaint. There's a free service out there that wants to know something about you in order for you to use it. They're still giving you something for nothing.

Or pay for your own web server and do whatever you want with it.

As they say, beggars cannot be choosers. If you want free service, you get a few terms and conditions.

If you're going to do that, I have a better option. Use http://www.webhostingbuzz.com/, and use the word 'ICE' in the prmotion code box. 50% off for the life of the account. So you get a hosting package with more than you will possibly need at one of the cheapest prices on the net.

It would bug me if Google products weren't better than everything else, in addition to being FREE.

Centralized database for individual users. Consider for a moment all the services google provides (For free, mind you), and what the average consumer prefers - ease of use.
1:This allows a single login, and
2:minimizes the customer support issues of "I got my (insert 3rd party account here) hacked..."

Lets look into what it'd take for you set up your own:
1: a domain. Somewhere from $5-$35 a year to coordinate this and your DNS.
2: a static IP. There are options for a dynamic DNS, but they are less simple.
3: a dedicated hosting machine. Doesn't have to be a powerful one, but configure your own, and take some basic measures to secure it.
4: Migrate your blog entries to the new machine. A lot of cutting and pasting to go.

If you're in the IT department's good graces, they might help. Understand your Blog is about the last thing on the list of their issues...and there's a fair chance they'll just advise you to sign up for the email account.

Or, you could save yourself time and just sign up a bogus name and create a gmail account.

It (the blog) started working again the next day. If it siezes up again I'll sign up for gmail. Really guys, I was just venting my spleen. I'm amazed that my old man rant solicited so much reasonable, level headed advice.
