Hello folks,

I am working on building an Imperial Guard army using the old Praetorian miniatures from the 90's. I currently have Drew Olds from Garden Ninja Painting working on this army as quickly as I can locate and send Praetorian miniatures out to him to be painted. He does wonderful work and thus far has knocked out around 25 figures for me along with two tanks.

Last night I finished painting the new GW Battlescape terrain piece and thought it would be fun to take some "action" shots of my Praetorians crossing it.

I hope you enjoy these. I will be posting more pictures as the army grows and I finish up a few more terrain projects.

This is a really cool terrain piece which was a lot of fun to paint. I left the equally cool rifle memorial bit off the terrain to be used as an IG themed objective marker.

To reiterate, the models were painted by Garden Ninja Painting and the terrain was painted by me.

Good paint job, tell me about the rust on the rhino, it's sweet, how did you achieve it?

Thanks!

The rust is actually really quick and easy.

I base coated the Rhino with a metallic color (P3's Pig Iron) then gave it a wash of GW's Badab Black.

Once that was dry I did a wash of GW Dark Flesh and covered the majority of the blackened metal with the wash.

Once that was dry I did a combination of dry brushing and stippling with GW Vermin Brown. That gives the rust a slightly textured look. After that layer was finished I did a very light layer of dry brushing and stippling with GW Fiery Orange. The orange is just dusted onto the Vermin Brown.

That is all. The Rhino came together in under an hour and was my favorite part of the project.

Very good work on that terrain. The Rhino, rocks, the trees, it all looks great.

Also, thanks for the group shot. I don't always get to see the armies I paint all together.

This is a great color scheme! Did you choose it yourself? And where have you been getting your hands on praetorian guard?

Can't take credit for the color scheme, that is all Garden Ninja's doing. I asked for the canon Praetorian colors and he came up with what you see.

As for tracking down the figures eBay and Bartertown have been my primary sources. It has taken a few months but I have 75 troopers, 20 Heavy Weapons Teams, and 5 Praetorian Sentinels. My original plan was to supplement the army with Mordian Guard but I may stay with a pure Praetorian force.

That army is gorgeous. I love the Praetorian models, and the paintjob is really crisp. The vehicles are nice too, and I'm going to have to steal your rust technique to paint my friend's battlescape!

Holy Cow, those are the most beautiful Guardsmen I've ever seen. I've wanted to start a IG army from a more little-known chapter like the Praetorians, Valhallan, or Tallarn.

Your Kroot could count as penal troops.

Sharp looking army with a lot of classic models. Good stuff.

This is all absolutely fantastic. I love to see a unique Guard army.

If you've the notion to do so, an accompanying Zulu-themed Kroot army would be fun.

I think the Kroot Mercenary list is still allowed. And unless you have an Inquisitor or Grey Knights in the force, you can take Kroot as allies in an Imperial Guard force.

The ironic part is that the Kroot the IG get are way better than the ones the Tau can field.

Now that is just cool. Does anyone know where I could find the rules for the Kroot mercenary list? Are they in the current Tau codex?

I sense some Kroot in my future.

Thanks for the compliments on the army, everyone. odinsgrandson made this force really shine and I am glad others are enjoying it as much as I am.

I am posting an update for this army.

I didn't want to pull out all of my troopers so instead I am showing all of the new vehicles, characters, and units that have been added to this army since my last update in January. There are a few troopers sprinkled in for composition purposes as well as all the other vehicles in the army.

This update includes:
Command Chimera
Stormlord Super-heavy tank
Shadowsword Super-heavy tank
Leman Russ
Armored Sentinel Squad
Rough Rider Squad
Ogryn Squad
Guardsman Marbo Conversion
"Iron Hands" Straken Conversion
LE Commissar
Lieutenant Conversion

The Command Chimera is straight forward, but I added the Forge World armored skirts to the side along with the Praetorian lion emblem to denote it as a command vehicle.

By far I am most excited about the Rough Riders. The squad is made up of older Rogue Trader era Space Marine and IG bikes, along with resin body kits cast by TrooperPX from Bartertown. The arms and weapons are from Cadian sprues and the heads are from Empress Miniatures. Finally the spears are taken from the Wargods of Aegyptus range of miniatures. It took me nearly six months to track down all of the various bits for the unit and Drew did a marvelous job putting them together in a coherent fashion. The heads look a little small on the bodies but some of that is on account of the large armored shoulder pads and the camera. The heads look a bit more to scale in person, but could stand to be upsized just a tiny bit.

The two Super-heavy tanks were painted to compliment one another. The Stormlord is dubbed "The Breath of Sekhmet" after the lion headed goddess of Egyptian myth who breathed fire. I thought that was appropriate for the Vulcan Mega-bolter which it carried. The Shadowsword is a sister vehicle to the Stormlord and is dubbed "The Fang of Sekhmet" for its ability to penetrate the heavy armor of the Emperor's enemies.

The Ogryn squad will soon have its own Chimera, but for now they are hoofing it. Included in the squad is an older edition Ogryn which after purchasing I realized was smaller in scale than the current models. I reasoned that this fellow was a young Ogryn, and so I had his helmet painted with a white strip to indicate his inexperience in the field.

The Armored Sentinels have their weapons magnetized. In the photo they are carrying Plasma Cannons, but in my games I will likely have Autocannons mounted.

The two conversions I am most pleased with were the "Iron Hand" Straken model, and the Guardsman Marbo. The Straken counts as figure had some extensive sculpting on its right arm, and carries all the appropriate equipment for the character. Marbo likewise is properly equipped, and also has a trophy from his most recent kill adorning his back.

This army has been in the works since August and is really coming along nicely. I plan on adding some more Chimeras next, as well as a Psyker Battle Squad, and some Artillery.

I hope you enjoyed the update. More to come in the following weeks.
