I recently finished my first conversion project, turning an old Star Wars "Rancor" toy into a Gargantuan Squiggoth. I like it, it looks more like a giant Ork than a big, piggy, orky lizard.
[Thumb - After 1st weekends work.JPG]
It started looking like this after the first weekend.

[Thumb - R to S right view showing howda.JPG]
After a couple of weeks of work it was looking better

[Thumb - R to S face view 01.JPG]
It was definitely getting a menacing look.

Haha cool!

Is he a bit of a hassle in case of bumping with the extra top heaviness now?

Not top-heavy at all. It is pretty stable. I hot-melt-glued the arms and legs in position. The "hands" can still rotate at the wrists and it "knuckle-walks" in a very stable position. The howda interlocks with the lumps on its back and is chained in place. You can grab the legs and move it around on the table as needed. I built and painted it with play in mind.

A big Tyranosaurus modle might make an interesting squiggoth. It would definitely need some conversion work...

The force is strong with this one. Sorry had to do it.

Looks great! If you want to get some extra Star Wars points you might look into converting some Orks into those pig guards from Star Wars.

Thanks for the kind words guys!

The project was a real learning experience, since I have *no* sculpting experience at all. The rancor fought me the whole way. The vinyl it is made from is VERY glue-resistant. Hot melt glue is the only stuff I found that would stick to it, and then not everywhere on it.

This meant I had to sculpt the face additions on it, let them dry and then glue them in place with hot melt glue. Then I had to fill in gaps with plastic model putty before painting. The armor on the head and back is glued to thick plasticard pieces that are screwed into the rancor body with flat-head screws. The”arm” and “leg” armor is held on with upholstery tacks in a few places. Luckily those paint up like bigger rivet heads.

Rivets…sigh. I used my rotary leather hole-punch to punch out hundreds of “rivets” from thin plasticard. VERY monotonous.

I scratch-built the big kannon in front from a couple of old pens, some Space Marines Rhino parts, plasticard and the frame from a toy cannon from a child’s American Civil War playset. Great find there. The set had 4 field cannons and 4 mortars. With hardly any work at all the mortars became Ork Lobbas. The cannons will take a little more work but they will also become Ork Kannons.

The howda was designed to be an open-topped structure, so any Boyz it carries can quickly debark. It has a “back-porch” by the tail – a lower level platform that I have not yet figured out the purpose, other than getting the Orks closer to the ground for shooting purposes.

Amusing note: The howda mounted on the squiggoth sits about 12 ½ inches or so above the table top. This means that orcs carried on the howda using sluggas cannot hit the ground with them. (EDIT: I came home from work and measured things. I was wrong. The height of the howda is 10 inches above the table top. Orks on the edge of the howda can range a target about 5 inches away from the squiggoth's feet. Still sounded funny though - KtH)

Oh, and I think I'll skip making 40K stuff into Star Wars stuff.

That is ace. I like it a lot more than the official style squiggoth (although the forgeworld squiggoth is really impressive, too).

The chains are a nice detail, and I love the use of the ACM mortars.

If you don't mind a bit of constructive criticism, I think you should paint the fangs and toenails more yellowy, and paint the white armour plates on the arms and legs maybe brown, to look more natural and contrast with the green skin.

It could be the flash making them look white.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

If I was afraid of construction criticism I would not have posted pictures here...

When I get finished modding some AoBR Deffkoptas I will tone down the white with some yellowish-brown. I have to agree it will look better.
