Hey guys. Im starting a tau army. Im already set on mah scheme. i love it to death, so dont try and make meh change it. Ok. The bases. Check out the pic and then i need some suggestions on the color to paint the rim, and also some suggestions on how to make some cool base flock. Im goin for a kinda arid, desert look. I already painted a little dab of Scab Red on the base so tell me what you think of that. So please help meh out here!
Oh, and mah camera has been funky lately so tell me if you need better pics. Thanks!

As far as basing goes for an arid desert kind of deal just use cinnamon, it's good stuff.

Or whole grain flour (finer than real sand and is still tan) and is non-uniform in color which will help add depth or sift sand through a screen. You can build up a bit (of course it depends on how detailed you want to get) with green stuff before the pseudo-sand to give the appearance of stepping in it. Either way with pseudo-sand throw a small stone in here-and-there for effect.
Maybe paint the base trim the same as your figs third color/Tau writing (looks like a burnt orange from this angle).
Hope this helps.

I like the scheme! Baking soda works good for sand as well as snow. Just paint when done. I would make the base blend in with the terrain. So the Red or Blue rim doesn't work for me. But that's my 2 cents

For your basing flock, just get a tub of GW sand (or Woodland Scenic’s ballast), use white glue to attach it to the base (be sure to score your base with an exacto first), and paint it whatever color you want to. If you want to pick up some static grass for a few clumps, Gale Force 9 makes some that is very convincing for dead and dried grass.

I would definately check out Gale Force 9. Their basing material is really good, and they have a wide range. I would be tempted to go for a rust red almost dust like sand with some kind of yellow/brown arid grass. Woodland Scenics do some quite good long grass if memory serves me right ( here).
