Trying to come up with an extra 250 points to incorperate into my Mech-Vet IG list, I knew I wanted to bring a Valkyrie into the army. I've heard of the amazing horde elimitating power a Vendetta with Multiple Rocket Pods can achieve, and so allocating 140 points, I chose to bring a Valkyrie into the folds of my H'garian 25th Mechanized. Somehow in all this crazy point crunching, the idea of converting the Valkyrie into a AC-130 sliped into the horrors of my modeling mind. Once concieved, I knew there was no going back. So, here lies to questions to you Dakkadakkites:

A: This will change the firing arcs for nearly every weapon. How to resolve that with my opponent?

B: I'd like to maintain the weapon "feel" of the AC-130, but still follow all the allowed weapons and their stats in the IG codex. What weaponery in the 40k world looks like modern AC-130 weaponery, but its effects could still follow rules for "Multiple Rocket Pod", "Heavy Bolter", or "Multi-laser"?

IMO as long as the weapons have the same amount of coverage it doesn't matter if they poke out the front or the side of the aircraft.

If you are using it with standard Valkyrie/Vendetta rules then Kilkrazy is correct. If you want to deviate from them then just ask your opponent first, and be ready to field it as a regular Valkyrie/Vendetta if you play outside friendly games.


But you have given me an Apocalypse VDR idea. Some styrene to make it a little bigger, stick a earthshaker out the side along with an autocannon and an Assault cannon and then a true AC-130.

Believe it or not you can model it and still keep the overall feel of the spector gun ship due to the amount of weapons the real deal has on it.

If you go heavy bolters but model then instead with assault cannon barrels it will do an amazing job fitting in with the vulcan 30mm cannons on board. The 105mm cannon though would most likely only work with lascannons of something of that nature.

Yeah, I would say to try to keep the positioning of the Valk weapons on the AC-130 - i.e. waist heavy bolters, underwing missile pods, nose ML, etc. That'll be easiest to keep confusion to a minimum.

Other way around DBM, I'm picking up the Valkyrie model this afternoon. I want to load its weaponery (MRP, HBolters, Multi-lasers) onto one side. Clean up both "doors" so they dont exsist anymore. Bring the look of the Valkyrie into something more AC-130 like. So, instead of alot of foward fireing guns, they all fire out the Left... and instead of rockets firing out the left, something else, thats more "gun" but can be believed to use the 4, ap6, Largeblast stats.

So with the Valkyrie kit sitting in my hot lil' hands. I realize, woh, the side sprue for this kit is waaaay smaller then I remember. There is going to be very little space for everything, so space will be at a premium.

Thinking about weapon loadout, I'm thinking I'm going to model the Multiple Rocket Pods as Assault Cannons. This works for me for a number of reasons.
1: Same range, so less confusion on the tabletop.
2: These cannons fire from altitude by a circling aircraft, thus they are sprayed into the "Large Blast" area. Maybe different ammo too. All easily understandable fluff that allows Assault Cannons to have the weapon profile of Multiple Rocket Pods.
3: They would simulate the two 20mm M61 Vulcan cannons they had on the AC-130H Spectre (prior to '03) rather nicely

Originaly I was leaning towards two Heavy Bolters to act as erm, well, two Heavy Bolters and forego the direct connection to the 40 mm L/60 Bofors cannon. Now, with the kit right here, I'm thinking 1 gun will help keep the left side of this plane from looking too orky, meaning: Guns just sticking out of everywhere. I've access to a perverbial tonne of Heavy Bolters. From the ones that come with the kit, to IG Heavy Weapon Team ones, to SM Scout Handheld HBolter, to LR MBT Sponson HBolters... So with all these options, perhaps just go with a single HBolter with a better ammo feed and call it a HBolter with 6 shots?

Lastly comes the 105 mm (4.13 in) M102 howitzer. With only a Lascannon, or Multi-laser as weapons available to the Valkyrie, I'd truely love to model it with the Lascannon. Alas, the gamer in me says "Multi-laser is cheaper, and this aircraft is anti-infantry". So, I'm planning on just adding a Multi-laser to the side, and avoid any more "counts as" weaponery.

Now, to start working on boreing out some holes, and patching up the sliding doors...

Oh, I was just reading about the new contest (from the main page link). Thanks for the heads up but I'm not going to enter. Firstly, I just don't paint that well. (nothing near what I've seen other winners do in previous competitions) Secondly, my paint scheme for my Armour is very neat and tidy. Thirdly, I'm excited about this and the build blog potential it has.

I am planning on having it done soon as the event I want to use it in happens around Nov 20th.

Hey love the idea. IMO the lascannon would be closer to the 105mm in roles the basilisk is crazy to big huge art peice like that would be upwards of 155mm.

So finished the hardest part, just figuring out where and how to put all the weapons. Not entirely happy with my greenstuffing... but its new to me. Tried to create a leather wrapping effect like on Chimera Hull weapons. Fluff wise, I wanted the Assault Cannons to be hardly restrained, as they would be spraying and praying at the ground targets. While the HBolters and Multi-las are a bit more targeted, so don't need as much freedom of movement.

Removed the little tab near the door frame. That turned out to be a mistake as it aligns the Boom section of the tail. Oops.. Guess I'll have to eyeball it when I glue it.

So far I'm likeing how all the weaponery looks. Still need to trim up some mold lines, but otherwise I'm happy with the effect. LOTS of weapons all pointed at someone who's about to have a very bad day.

ok, so this thread seems like it hasn't been updated for a while and i just bought a Valkyrie with the intention of doing the exact same thing... infact as soon as i saw the valkyrie model my only thought was AC-130 Spectre... i wouldn't want it any other way. anyway i was wondering if any progress has been made and if pictures are available? i ordered the Salamander conversion kit from Forge World, because of the gun seems a close 41st millennium version of the 105mm howitzer. a multi-laser and a assault cannon will finish off the armaments. (the Spectre II being my platform of choice)
i was hoping to see how yours was coming so i could prepare for some of those conversion headaches that pop up,

why not write ur own rules on it, make it an apocalypse vehicle or something, its pretty cool

Wicked amount of firepower. There should be a morale check just to see if the targeted enemy just doesn't break cover and run when they see that bad boy circling around them alike a vulture.
