Welcome. Welcome to Deewalla's first attempt at a blog.

This will be the home of my own Regiment of Dave Taylor's wonderful Genswick IG army.

I already have a massive IG army, (maybe 8-10 thousand) so I don't aim for this army to be the highest competitive army. What I do want, is a very characterful, unique, army that envokes the feeling of the poor average guardsmen being driven in front of the guns. However, I know that I will try to make it a tough list while fitting to this wonderful theme Dave Taylor has modeled (and whom Dan Abnett wrote).

Still fleshing out the list. With my first IG army, I collected and collected and collected until really I could field almost anything in the IG codex multiple times over. With my Genswick army, I aim to create, from the start, a solid 1850 point list. Then maybe add from there. Then again, maybe not. As my 25th H'garian's would have whatever my 8th Genswick would need.

The idea in my head follows closely what Dan Abnett wrote in Straight Silver. Men fighting a 40 year, deadlocked trench war. Artillery, Mortars, and massive amounts of bodies. With this image and goal the following list still strives to be "hard".

So, without further ado.

The Eighth Genswick Regiment "The Bloody Eighth"

CCS, Straken, Regimental standard
2 Priests

PCS, 4 Grenade launchers
IS, Powersword, Melta, Commissar
IS, Powersword, Melta
IS, Powersword, Flamer
PCS, 4 Grenade launchers
IS, Powersword, Melta, Commissar
IS, Powersword, Melta
IS, Powersword, Flamer
HWS, 3 Mortars
HWS, 3 Mortars
HWS, 3 Mortars
HWS, 3 Mortars
20 Conscripts
20 Conscripts

2 Hydras
Manticore
Colossus

I've aim'd to make this a quagmire of men, supported by artillery and mortar. While not the best list. (I could do that with the guard I already have) I think this list does a great job at bringing a trench warfare theory to 40k. Blobs of men with Commissars and Priests, with blobs of Conscripts screening, covered by ordnance lobbed from the rear. HUZZAH!

This list does however leave me with 150 points left and I'm unsure where to put it. I first was thinking a Banewolf with Multi-melta for some more anti-armor. I know a Vendetta would be great, but it is a worse fit then the Banewolf. (Theme wise) 150 is enough to add Rough Riders, (which Theme fits perfectly) but I'm unsure if they fill a needed role. Either way, I know I have some time to figure it out as getting 100+ Genswick troopers will be a (expensive) process.

The Hydra's I dream of doing in the style of a Half-Track. (Commissarbob's hydra take on Dave Taylor's ork truck/chimera conversion)

The Manticore I'd like to create as a Russian Katyusha multiple rocket launcher on the back of Dave Taylor's ork truck/chimera conversion. Similar to the Hydra above.

The Colossus I envision as a large field piece. First thoughts are to create a base the same size and dimensions as a Colossus Tank would have. Then to pile up Sandbags/Trench Walls. Model a Heavy Bolter team covering the front. Add a field gun and there ya go. While, on the table, it might seem wierd for a gun emplacement to move around, I doubt opponents will mind. (As it wouldn't be firing when it's moving)

To start, I'm using various internet resorces for guides and inspiration.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/267862.page -Accolade's 64th Genswick, he's done a great job! Alot of research links there too

So. There you have it. I only hope in the coming weeks moral will stay high, wallets will stay un-empty, and men will be made for the war-mill. First boxes of Men-at-arms, and Cadian squads ready to be opened, cut apart, and assembled.

Besides proclaiming my intentions to the world of Dakka (in the hopes that the Dakka will keep me to my word ) I've got some questions too.

Any good sites for buying bits? -A few that I've found all seem to have stocks of 0-3 on various items. Not the numbers I'm needing to create 100+ Genswickian's (? Ha, is that the right word?)
150 points. What to add... what to add.....

"A jolting field truck, smeared in mud, rumbled past, turning east. Behind it came a staggering file of artillery tractors towing 0.12 feldkannone pieces. Aexe Alliance infantry in filthy green greatcoats walked beside the column." -Excerpt from Straight Silver by Dan Abnett. The introduction of the 30th battalion, Genswick Foot.

First infantry model made. Very simple, if exacting, conversion. The arms must be clipped just right, or you risk mutant arms. Either much too long, or far too stubby. Following the originals from Dave Taylor, the stocks are removed from the Lasguns. His conversions also seem to have alot of kit. That not something I'm overly fond of, for painting reasons mostly. So I'm going to leave the models rather basic. A man with a gun, wearing a tin hat.

A quick undercoat and some paint, and I'll have my first prototype Genswickian.

On the subject of paint. I want to keep the green that is so vividly captured by both Dan Abnett and Dave Taylor. For the secondary color, I love the look of the grey. However, I don't want them to be an exacting match. Another muted color perhaps? Brown? Any suggestions?

Awesome to see another Genswick player Deewala!!

I was just as inspired when I saw Dave Taylor's original army, it just took me a couple of years to resolve to build it. Seeing this blog reminds me I have my own army to finish!

I bought most of my army in bit form off Ebay, buying up droves of Bretonnian heads and torsos and Cadian arms. I know what you mean about cutting down the arms; I kept the stocks on the lasguns and had to go back and cut a lot of the arms down even farther because they ended up freakishly long. The good news is I haven't had a lot of problems cutting them too short, so hopefully you won't have a problem with that.

As far as color goes, if you want to differ from the grey/green scheme of Dave's, I suggest doing another earthen tone, such as the brown you were thinking of. A mid-tone brown would probably look pretty good. You could just give them mostly green uniforms, with brown boots and satchels and wooden guns (of the same brown color). I saw a French WWI manniquin with a green uniform similar to this on wikimedia commons (you can google wwi uniforms and find it easily).

I'll be keeping an eye on this blog to see how building the Genswick goes for you!! If you need any advice or anything, just PM me, I'm always eager to help another of the cause

Just back from my Local Gaming Store. We've got a weekly campaign going. Was a blast. This week was 1100 points with 0-1 Troops, and +1 to all other choices. =D

Ran 3 deathstrikes. 1st game they gloryiously won the match. 2nd game they utterly failed. Was still fun though.

ANYWHO... while I was there I scanned the paint rack. The two colors that really seemed to fit what I've thought about were BOTH Foundation paints.... Knarloc Green and Charadon Granite. Have two infantry men ready to paint.

I'll get a good feel for how they're going to look at the end of the day. (I hope)

Then, it's off to clipping, and converting, and glueing 4 boxes of bits together. =D

...... to make only 20 troopers. Opph the math on this project sucks. But it'll be so worth it.

Wow. Took about an hour for the first guy. Really REALLY like the way he came out.

Still debating about adding the unit markings on the rear of the tin hat. There's time for that later I suppose. With this first Genswickian painted, I really want to pop out the Regimental Banner bearer. If for nothing else to get my Regimental design finished. Thinking of using a near copy of Dave Taylor's standard bearer. Except using a red blood drop as the banner free-hand design.

I like the idea of adding a big splash of red, and it fits with the nickname of the regiment. "Bloody Eighth"

Need to add a bit of green-stuff to my fat flamer trooper. The flamer position requires me to craft a custom fuel tube. No biggie. Then I'll get him primed and with the banner man. That'll be 4 out of 100+. Wooo!

2nd Genswick painted. Took a little less time this go around. Namely because I wasn't hunting for colors or debating what color goes where.

Flamer Trooper has the greenstuff added, and I DID build the Regimental Banner man. Once the green stuff dries, they will both get a nice even primer coat then go under the brush. The Flamer will be pretty easy to paint up but I'm really looking foward to the Banner.

Give something for my army to rally around as it grows.

@Steempunk: The entire torso, legs, and sleeves are one piece of plastic from the Bretonnian Men at Arms. Soooo, as for short legs, talk to GW =D

I don't know if it was the lighting or flash, but yeah, his left arm is illuminated way up in the joint. The conversions are simple. Taking a Cadian arm and Gun, and matching it to the empty sleeve of the Bretonnian. Simple, but exacting. Miss the clip, and you end up with long or short arms. The joint in the picture isn't the greatest, but it's recessed and won't be noticed when there are 100s of these buggers marching towards you.

*looking at the pic.. I can see where I smushed some white unto his sleeve when I painted the crest. I'll have to retouch that. Wow, its WAY more visable in the pic then on the model*

Stalling out abit working on the Banner Man. Having a bit of difficulty with the blood drop. Just can't free-hand for carp.

Also played with the list a slight bit. Looking to take out the 20 man conscripts squads and replace with 2 Melta/P-sword squads and 2 all-melta Special weapon Squads.
Still leaves me with 60 points. While talking at the Local Gaming Club, someone brought up the idea of DaemonHunter Inquisitor. Looking further into it, I just might go for it. It's only 68 points for an Inquisitor, Psychic Hood, 2 Hierophants (to boost him to Ld10), and 2 Mystics (anti-drop goodness). For cheap, will help out the army on the whole.

Eagerly awaiting to have a Banner Man painted, and a full Infantry Squad done and painted by this Monday.

Then to start investigating who in my area has a programable laser cutter for my Ork Truck/Hydra conversions....

Looking very nice. Genswick regiments are always fun to watch. I say go for the Inquisitor. Maybe you can fluff him up to go with the Genswick regiment,as a provost or something? The mystics help him find which soldiers have been up to no good and the hierophants help make examples of them.

Well, Mondays here and how about that promised fully painted 10 man squad.......

erm.... yeah......

As much as I want to blame it on work and loosing two days of what I thought would be time off. I know I could of gotten farther in the time I DID have. However, I did get 4 more infantrymen built, finished the 2nd Genswickian with paint, and then (almost) finished up the Banner Bearer. Soooooo... TO THE PICS!

Here's a frontal shot of my bannerman. (I couldn't for the life of me get it to save "rotated right"... sorry for the neck cramps)

With a side shot, better to see the Banner with.

I can see I need to get some paint on the cloth near his legs. But... as the back of the banner isn't done with the freehand yet, this is still a WIP. My first ever Painted Banner. Like the way it looks. Very VERY happy with the lettering and number. The HQ squad is going to have white highlights, Hence the white shirt, and (groin?)cloth. The Banner pole topper was made with two IG Tank Sprues bits. I didn't want to go the route of just using a Bretonnian topper, but didn't want to leave it bear either. Something clicked that those Double Headed Eagle bits that come in every IG tank kit would be PERFECT glued back-to-back then plopped on the top. I love it. Looks like it's supposed to be there. Not sure if I'm sold on every model that has the tiny shield on his person will get a freehand blood drop on a white background. But they'll be painted white for sure. I'll leave painted tiny blood drops for latter.

My two painted Genswick Foot models. Wow, looking at the pics, the camera is BRUTAL. I can see the tiny bit of flash on the mag of the Lasgun, also, this close and fully lit, I notice the arm doesn't 100% match. bleh. Oh well. I'll have 94 more guys to practice on to make it perfect.

And a group shot of my built Genswicks. Ooof, Had ALOT of learning with the Meltagun guy. The arm angles just would NOT match. Eventually I got it into a believeable, and natural pose, but most of the guys were like that. Tough and Fiddy to work out. I hope the end result will blind my opponents into not taking TOO close a look at the boys.

Hope you dakkites enjoy the update. Few questions I have:

Besides the IG command box, where can I get Imperial Plastic Meltaguns on the cheap? $15 a Command Squad box for 1 Melta apiece I think will break me faster then the regular Genswicks
Banner too open? While clean and crisp... I just have the itch that this Regimental Banner is a bit to.... un-cluttered.

Finnaly, my next goal. (Hopefully not to go unfulfilled as my last)
Finish 1st Squad and Start my first Mortar Squad by Monday.
With little updates along the week. Till then, Cheers!

Forgeworld is going to looooove me.

2 IMPERIAL GUARD SABRE DEFENCE PLATFORM WITH HEAVY STUBBERS £40.00

IMPERIAL HEAVY MORTAR £16.00

4 DEATH KORPS OF KRIEG MORTAR SQUAD £168.00

40K BARBED WIRE £6.00

2 ORK HALFTRAKK COMPLETE KIT £64.00

Ooph. On the otherhand, I'll have all the bits for my Hydra's and Collosus. Plus all those yummy mortar's. Did the math, and it was a few dollars cheaper to go with FW on this. About $22 a mortar, while going Empire Cannon would have been $25 or Ork Kannon would have been $23. This way I get neat looking mortars AND bits for making some objective markers. (DKoK guys) I went with the Heavy Stubbers for the Hydra with the image inmind to lengthen the barrels abit, then craft a shield around it in the stylings of a Wirbelwind

With all the work I've been getting, (I'm a chauffuer IRL. Pay is great, hours are erratic and unpredictable) if I don't have time to work on the Genswick, at least I'll be making the money to afford em. Even after this FW cash dump, I know I still have a good $300 in Men-at-arms and Cadian Squad boxes to purchase. Meh. All for the love the the game I suppose. Cheers!

@Stretch: Oh! I didn't know about that. Yeah, now looking at the GW website, I'll go for those metal metals. Cheap enough for me, and still 100% visually a meltagun.

Played my first game as Genswick the other day. 1500pts against another conversion project to boot! Ork Ravenwing/Deffwing. Some fantastic bikers with all the Dark Angles bits. Even wazzdakka looking like Master of the Ravenwing. Best of luck to him, it'll look sweet.

Rolling the dice, we played Dawn of War/Kill Points. Both of us grimaced. I won the roll and went first. In retrospect I shouldn't of just turtled in a corner. I did learn that while (with Straken) that Guard (with enough numbers) can be AMAZINGLY dead-hard in close combat. I folly is that I spead myself out over my entire board edge. Once one flank collasped, and the bikers ate enough kill points to be winning, the orks retreated. I didn't have enough long range to force a fight. Granted this is after turn 1 when both my Manticore and Collosus were destroyed. Both which were learning lessons for me. The Manticore was too far on the (later collasped) flank. While the Collosus was out in the open, and lucky glanced killed by Lootas. (Collosus's CANT direct fire, NEVER place it without building/Terrian infront of it) The Mortars however surprisingly were TONS of fun. Pinning Lootas, and thrashing orks as they marched across. My two big squads where in area terrian, and each took the ork charge. (One of them tried to assault, but I rolled a 1 and a 3.... was 4 inches from assaulting!!!! With the priest and Straken, I woulda HOSED that 30boy mob.) However, they held on the charge and won. Even the warboss and HIS mob got ate by H'garians (with later help from a Straken and PCS counter assualt) At the end of turn 3, the amount of Green and Pink bodies was AMAZING. Blood bath. However, he was up 5-3 in KP's, and so his Kans, Bikers, Wazzdakka, Battlewagon, and 3rd boy squad (now 8 out of 20) just started to run. On foot, I'd never catch. So I conceeded that I wouldn't get a chance to make up and KPs.

GREAT game. Amazingly different playstyle. I REALLY wish I got that assault off. 60+ Str4, I4, re-roll's to Hit, Stubborn, 16 powerweapon attacks would of just been TOO sweet. To the Credit of the Manticore and the Collosus. (Each which got to fire once.) They did do nasty damage. The Collosus nuked 3 bikers in one hit (more if I didn't roll a few 1s and 2s.) The Manticore's single rocket of the match took nearly 10 orks. (and that was with the 3rd shot scattering WAY off) With this battle, I'm eager to get more of my guys done, AND order my next 5 boxes of cadains and men-at-arms. =D

Cheers!

WOOOO.

Big box of FW stuff arrived the other day. As with ALL forgeworld items, I'm a bit put off by their "instructions" (usually a picture of the finished model, or maybe just pictures of each individual parts with flash and sprue still attached)

However, starting on my first Hydra Truck and figureing out where stuff goes. Looking like I'll ditch the Wirblwind gun armor idea and go more for a M16 look. Or maybe 1/2 a wirble turret. I dunno. Right now however, all the bits just look cool!

"The mortars were squat, blue-metal machines called feldwerfers, and used compressed gas to fire the three kilo shells pneumatically. The crews kept the weapons spotlessly clean, they were forever polishing and oiling them. In contast, the men themselves were filthy and their uniforms piecemeal." Description of the mortars used in Straight Silver by Dan Abnett

Now having 12 of these mortars to build, and 24 Genswicks to convert to man them seems a daunting task. But wow oh wow do these little mortars look sweet. Have brass etched barbed wire and looking to pick up some wooden coffee stirers to make some trench walls and fences for all of my mortar teams. That combined with the Heavy Mortar (which was smaller then I'd expected...) as a fortification, should solidify this army as a Trench Warfare army.

Pics coming soon.
