After an extended break from the 40k universe i took the plunge a few weeks ago and have suddenly hit a bit of a wall. After striping the paint off an Emperor's Champion metal model that i had painted up as a Grey Knight Justicar, i have gone the way of the plasitcard and grey stuff and have been using all my skills to convert the model into an inquisitor lord, although without the paint i am still seeing a model that looks more like a Grey Knight. Anyway i have reached the point where he is near completion (in the build that is) and i am stuck.

So the question that i am putting out there is:
does the model/rules REQUIRE that i maintain the power armour's backpack/powerplant, or can i leave it off and cover it up with a cloak or cape of some kind? (I will admit that i got into 40k for the fun of painting and modelling and have never, in my all my years, battled out a game or even spent any reasonable amount of time trying to learn the rules/method of playing)

Although capes aren't exactly my forte, i would love to put one on him instead of the backpack. also, any comments on how i should paint him... like a grey knight or more like an inquisitor, or even suggestions for additional conversions are very welcome.

Anyone with questions about how i constructed the daemon hammer just let me know and i will share the how-to.

Wow! That looks incredible! The rules state that a model has to be WYSIWYG, but seeing as you quite clearly have modelled power armour, I see no reason why you cant forget the power plant and go ahead with the cape.

Again, fantastic looking model, can't wait to see some paint on him!

you could try snagging a cape from a fantasy model as the base, and greenstuff from there

also, looks damn cool so far

Personaly, i've always disliked the backpacks. Having the cape would just up the awsomness, you have to do it. The EC is pretty obviously in power armour.

Is that followed by a pile-in move?

That brings a whole new meaning to the term "Hit and Run"

Can that be following a deep strike, or do you have to wait until the next round?

Loving the model

just cause there was a question about the daemon hammer i will give a quick run through on the parts i used... it is bit long because i have a bits box full of chopped up models from old projects, but i it isn't hard to make something similar with different parts.

Anyway (from the top down)

1) 0.04 inch/ 1.0 mm - plasticard... i tightly glued 4 pieces together in a sandwich and then filed it into a nice rectangle, and then glued two faces on either end.
2) inquisitor symbols cut from standard sm plastic deathwatch shoulder pads - this bit comes with most conversion sprues these days... this technique is a bit tidious but worth the effort if you are like me and can't gs that kind of detail
3) the plastic shaft is from a Black Templar axe from the BT conversion sprues - really any power axe shaft will do
4) hand is from the metal "sm commander with axe" - i prefer to use metal for jobs like this, pinning into plastic hands can be a pain... also i haven't seen this model in recent memory
5) 1/16 inch/ 1.6 mm plasicard rod
6) gs - once i had the desired thickness of gs on the rod i rolled it on the diamon pattern grip on my hobby knife to press in the look of grip tape
7) finally the skull off the end of Witch Hunter Confessor Kyrinov's power mace

that parts list consists of a lot of little fiddly bits but it could be simplified for sure... also... if you didn't know already and are looking to fill out a bits box without having to buy GW box sets... the Emporer has blessed us with http://www.thewarstore.com/battlewagonbits.html

From what I understand, Space marine power armor uses the backpack as an external power supply. The suit itself has an internal battery and can function as normal for a period of time.

Your inquisitor simply couldnt go on long protracted missions. Not that Id see an inquisitor doing that anyway.

It could be worse, you could be on fire.

thanks for the feed back everybody, it was really appreciated. although i was on the fence about the cape v. backpack i ended up deciding that the backpack just wasn't custom enough... an inquisitor has the best available equipment, even if he was wearing sm power armour there would be some rare form of powerplant that was the size of a laptop battery or something... so cape it is.

An Inquisitor would probably using the strength-boosting functions less anyway.

I mean, look at him, he's just going around showing people his book.

(Really nice model by the way. I agree that the cape looks better.)

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

I used to hate that Emperor's Champion model. But you actually showed a good use for him!

I really like where he's going so far, but I think he needs more =][= material - and this should be shown on the shin pads (greaves?) with extra detail (kind like the way Solar Macharius minis has lots of filigree details). Plus you can show more detailed work with the paintjob.

The cape really lifts it- well done and good choice!

I agree with FrantzFanon: a little detailing on the leg greaves and you'll have a 1st class mini. I think the =][= on one leg and a bunch of purity seals on the other.

Well done, and can't wait to see him painted!

thanks for the compliments! i wish i could write a tutorial for the cape but unfortunately it was pure luck. i must have scrapped an idea and restarted 6-7 times. i think i have the worst technique, it somehow works but it can't be taught!

the one thing that i can say is that, after a couple of hours the gs was much easier to deal with... i mean, when you first mix it, it was very sticky and requirs a lot of water. if you roll it (i roll it between two pieces of plastic cut from a new sandwich bag to prevent finger prints) and cut it into the basic shape you want and then leave it for an hour or two it becomes much more managable. once it had reached this stage it was still flexible but wasn't sticking to everything or becoming misshapen when i handled it. however, i don't know if this is a recommended technique, it just worked cause i am a persistant sob (haha, not a "sister of battle" but the other sob). i guess pracitice makes possible.

anyway distractions happen and for the next little while i have to work on this Chaos Lord... another example of my adhoc cape making abilities, that i am building for a friend

WOW. Love the flail you made. Reminds me of the one the Litch King guy used in the last LOTR movie.

Your Inquisitor looks really nice too. My only complaint, is why is he showing the book? It makes more sense to me, that he would have it towards him, in a reading type of manner.
Anywho, very nice work man, paint it!

i thought about doing it so that he looked like he was reading but for no reason other then because i liked it facing outward, thats the way it ended up. being a grimoire of names it would make sense that he would be reading from it... but maybe he is being a douche and showing some daemon that his goose is cooked. And well spotted, the flail is based on the Witch King's from LOTR-ROTK, but don't tell, copyright infringement is taken very seriously these days ; )

I remember reading in Eisenhorn that "even seeing [the symbols of warding] would hurt it, even if it wouldn't banish it completely." Perhaps thats what the inquisitor is doing?

thanks to the Space Marine Painter provided by bolter and chainsword ( http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/smp.php ) i think i found my basic colour scheme for the armour... i stress the basic part of this.
and painting begins with an undercoat of Chaos Black, and then the base for the armour, staight Kommando Khaki.
some flaws in the model seem kind of obvious thanks to the super close up and the lighting, but i think they won't stand out once the successive highlights and weathering are completed.

love the conversion on the inquisitor. only thing I am wondering is where you are fully heading with it I guess with the paint as you went uber light grey on the sides or at least the pic makes itlook like that. Anyways I am looking forward to seeing it done.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!
