There might already be a few threads about this,
but its very hard to choose which chapter i want to paint.
Obviously i dont want to paint 500 points and then realise i dont want it anymore.
There are a few i have in mind:

Ultramarines
Pros - Ub3r Fluff, Lots of background, Easy to paint, lots of tutorials and help, balanced gaming
Cons - there are ALOT of people painting ultramarines, aparently everyone seems to sigh at the smurfs?

Blood Ravens
Pros - Individual army, have a nice deep red colour, balanced army
Cons - not so much fluff as the ultramarines

Howling Griffons
Pros- They look sick
Cons - B!@7ch to paint

So what do you recon forum?

Black Templars are for pussies!

Go for the UltraMarines. You know you want to. I know you want to because they were your first choice up there. Stop being a sissy and just go with the blue guys! DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Howling griffins, they're unusual and look great. You dont really see many either so you will score, "Oooo what are they!" points.

Im a big fan of the checkered schemes! Or quartered as i think they are called?!

Im designing my own chapter colours at the moment. Not that i will follow it through or anything. But designing your own is an option as you are free to do what you want!

Of course, as an American, that means I must say that soccer sucks, and football (real football... you know, the one where you do everything with your hands) is 10,000 times as good. I mean, football players could probably beat up soccer players, even, because they actually know sports.

Sounds good! ive been trying to find tutorials on how to paint howling griffons, i have no idea... ive googled it and binged it but cant find much.
If i were to paint ultramarines they would be pretty much AoBR styling, right off the website.

Go with the Aurora Chapter!

They are decended from Ultramarines geneseed, and are very codex - adherent, so they are just as balanced as the ultras. They focus more heavily on mechanized combat than any other chapter, so if you like tanks, they are perfect. Their color scheme is just as simple as the ultramarines, just replace the ultramarines blue armor with snot green armor, and the gold shoulder trim with black shoulder trim.

I have a company worth of them so far, and I still love em.

So far its between these two

The Aurora chapters looks good too

Between those two, I vote ultramarines!

I'm not a fan of the quartered scheme, and ultramarines just have an aura of nobility about them... that and they are not normally done well. Most ultramarines armies you see out there are done by schizophrenic 5 year olds who paint them with buckets of house paint, using the family pet's tail as a brush.

Well done ultramarines are a sight to behold.

I would go for Howling Griffins because the paint scheme although a pain to paint will look great when you have a small battleforce together , there's way to many Ultramarines floating about and the same goes for blood Ravens.

If you think you might sell your army the Ultras are a good way to go since there's more of a market for painted Ultras.

But I always recommend for playing that people come up with their own. GW rules change significantly every 4-5 years, and for Marines there's a new codex of one form or other every year.

So I recommend playing the 'Sons of Flexibility' who can change codexes at well when you want to try out something new.

The approach I followed to choose my chapter was to look at those that GW mentioned in their codex (briefly) and go with one of those that I liked the scheme of. Because they were mentioned in the GW literature, it feels more "legitimate" to me than a totally homebrew chapter. There are plenty of chapters out there with only a line or two mention in the fluff somewhere that would make a great tabletop army.

Instead of making boring sm you start uber cool csm and it doesn't matter if you want to change color between every 500 points because you can still play with them as black legion.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

Howling Griffons simply because it's something different from the norm. Way too many Ultramarines and they're kinda boring, didn't realise there was a lot of Blood Ravens armies though, had been tempted by a deep dark red and bone colour scheme for years before DoW similar to theirs.

My personal favourite chapter, hands down.

Mentor Legion.

Beautiful colour scheme, interesting history and background.

Go Howling, you have an original army and a great colour. You can batch paint in the yellow and then add the red over it (not too hard to cover yellow with red). Plus history is what you make of it, not what you copy from a book!

Make your own howling griffon characters, base them around a story or a tactic. Give them names and make the game more fun!

Whatever you choose, I hope you enjoy it.

Does anyone have any links of sources that could explain the painting???
i was thinking of spraying the yellow then painting the red followed by washes then highlights.
rough idea?

Howling Griffins got my vote. They look nice and like others have said, you don't run into them every day. I'd go quartered though... they were (I believe) originally double quartered. Looked too busy and were an even bigger pain to paint! Plus, I happen to know you can find decent Griffin decals around the net!

In my opinion the Howling Griffins look terrible. I'm also not a huge fan of all red models, so I had to cast my vote for the Ultras...

play black templars man...

pros=easy to paint(as long as you can do line-hilighting, but if you can't then you shouldn't be in this hobby), bad-ass background, the army as a whold looks sick(c'mon black/red marines with white crosses....gutta love 'em)

cons= not an easy army to play due to "two-edged blade" rules...that's all

play a part in the greatest crusade any chapter has undertaken!!!
