Not a "counts as" lizard or something, but an actual good looking wolf fig to use for Thunderwolves.

Chaos hounds i think would be way to small as for the wargs they might work but i have not seen one in person out of the box so dont know for sure.

LOTR wolves are considerably smaller than the Chaos Warhounds you mentioned. While I have not plopped a SW on top of one of my warhounds, I just think that a Thunderwolf needs to be bigger. A lot of people are using the pre-painted D&D dire wolf from the unhallowed expansion (at least I think that is its source) because they are cheap and look good w\o the need for much conversion work. Some people have gone the opposite direction and are using High Elf Lions from the chariot set with a lot of green stuff to make it wolfy.

There are rumors that the TW will be included in Wave 2, but until there is some confirmation of the contents of that wave I am not holding my breath.

Looks small...

I think these have potential:

(from Hell Dorado)

Greenstuff some fur as needed, and that is a 40mm base I think so the model is suitably big to be ridden by a Marine. The models used need to look like they could carry a rider or they are gonna look comical which I don't think would be the desired reaction...

That's great, CT Gamer! Chop off some of the spikes, greenstuff a saddle, and voila! Thunderwolves!

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Having finally gotten the chance to see the Canis model in the flesh I think the wolf sculpt is alright, however they would be very pricey to buy him just to convert the wolf. My friend who works for GW Aberdeen is using the lions from the High Elf chariot kit with a fair bit of greenstuff on for fur and the braids clipped off. When you compare them to the artwork in the Space Wolf codex they look really good as the pictures show the fenrisian wolves have a slight cat like look to them, with much more pointy/longer ears then a real wolf. Even though the chariot kit aint cheap either, it does give you two lions, where as Canis only gives you one Fangir. I also like the fact they are smaller then Fangir as the fluff is that Fangir is the largest of his kind, so would look out of place if all other Thunderwolf cavalry where as big as the Canis model.
I fully expect Thunderwolf cavalry to be a Forge World release in the not too distant future (like Ogre Rhinox riders).

How about the metal warg chieftan? Not too small. I have plans to take a WGBL on TH with saga of the Hunter and FB
(kind of outflanking lonewolf of strength what?!) and I was thinking of using the model. Its the only wolf model I have in my
force at the moment as Im not too keen on the other models I can get my hands on (only ever used 1 wolf anyway)
Thoughts?

Size wise the wolf needs to be a certain size in relation to the rider to not appear comical/unrealistic. Notice the size relations on these models:

Chaos Knights fantasy horses, I am running a SW count as world eaters army though.

But with some greenstuff, they could look very wolfy.

Because a super-human in power armor riding a wolf NEEDS to be realistic?

Are we listening to ourselves these days?

I have some LotR wargs, but they aren't assembled if someone want to take them off my hands.
