There's a lot of talk about how competetive 40K is handicapped by GW's current stance toward competetive gaming. To help rectify these problems in a community-oriented manner, I think a 40K Tournament Forum would be a good idea.
Thoughts?

This idea is more for discussing the tournament scene in general and how it can be improved. There's the INAT FAQ, so how about some national Tournament Rules (points level, approved missions, etc.)?

Why not a few different brackets for tournament play? 1500pt, 1850pt, and 2000pt for example.

That would be possible if there's enough support for each. Obviously, there would have to be separate rankings for each "bracket."

I think the goal of any attempt to create a more uniform tournament scene (because that is what it sounds like is being talked about here) should be undertaken in a way that places the minimal number of constraints on the tourney organizers. Otherwise such an attempt would tend to alienate them, and they're the keystone to getting any type of tournament scene up and running.

Gimme some parameters here. Are you talking noting tournaments or much more?

Edit so far your idea is intriguing with some Mods liking the idea but you need to flesh out a little bit. Nows your chance!
What would be the scope?
What would be on topic?
What would be off topic and subject to moderation?

Frazzled also sent me a PM to this effect, here's my response so everyone else can see it: The scope would be a discussion of the 40K tournament scene. This would be partly with an intent to start to "standardize" 40K tournament play with an eye towards making it more competetive by doing so. Things like determining a standard points level, creating a ranking system, creating an approved missions list, a list of "approved" tournaments that use these rules, discussion of all of the aforementioned, upcoming events, metagame discussion, etc. would all be on topic. Things like army lists, batreps, etc. (that already have forums) would be off topic and subject to movement. Of course, the usual Dakka rules would apply with the addition something along the lines of "This is the tournament forum-for discussing playing 40K competetively, to win. If you don't feel that this is the way 40K should be played, you are entitled to your opinion, but discuss it elsewhere." Any attempt to start a "tournament/power gamer" vs. "casual gamer" discussion would (obviously) be subject to moderation, as would a thread like "Why do all these stupid scrubs go to tournaments if they don't try to win and then whine about it?". Glad to see the positive response Iron_Chaos_Brute I'm obviously open to input on the concept (I want this to be a comunity thing), but try to stay within the spirit of the idea

*How interact with lists and current lists subdirectory?
*same to same for tactics?

We already have perfectly good lists and tactics subdirectories. If the community wants it, there could be a "tourney lists" or "tourney tactics" stickied threads or subsubdirectory (I don't know how it would exactly work, to be honest). It would be one of those things that would be fleshed fully out as the subdirectory grew, probably.

The tournament forum wouldn't be for discussing tournament lists or tactics; it would be for discussing tournaments themselves, as well as more general "competitive 40k" issues.

Update: this has been viewed as being duplicative and unneeded as much of the focus of Dakka is directly related to tournament play.
