Haven't got to painting yet, but I've 3D printed some gothic-style spaceships:

I've been playing around with 3D printing for a few months now, and it seems like an interesting way to scratch build models. I'd be interested in other's experiences with the technology or thoughts on these models.

thank,

arun

Haven't gone to print, but you're not the first. Dreamforge-games is 100% computer designed, and theres a dakkite who has designed a knight titan and gone to print with that as well.

I'd buy those Gothic Ships for a $1! (or maybe more depending on what you might charge)

No clue. I'd take a look at the news and rumors section, probably a sticky there.

No, a printer is still well out of my budget range. :-)

I used Shapeways.com

More models can be found at my shop at:

I should post the Gothic Sytle ships for sale in a few days.

Thanks White Wolf!

Any suggestions for a color scheme? The material I used is somewhat rough to the touch, so I am thinking it would work well with a stone-type look. The material also takes fabric dye very well, so I might use that instead of a paint base.

thanks,
arun

Yes, I've been really impressed with their capabilities and cost. Also, the models do take paint pretty well. Jeff, at Impoverished Lackey Services has done a great job painting a few of my other Shapeways models:

Maybe it's the 3d model you make, but it doesn't appear like the technology is quite there yet. The bits by GW and some other companies seem to hold a lot more detail after production than what I'm seeing with 3d printers so far. I'm waiting for it to get to the point where I can make alternate torsos, weapons, etc.

First there was Churchtank, now there's Churchship? Now I've seen everything! Good work though.

I'd tend to blame my own modeling skills before the technology :-)

The specific machine I used for these models has a minimum detail of about 200 microns (2/10 of a mm). There are machines which have detail in the 10s of microns. (for scale, a human hair is between 17 to 181 microns).

For high detail parts you might want to try printapart.com, they offer 30-40 micron resolution.

I'm hoping the 200 micron resolution should be reasonable for the tabletop - the angular resolution of the human eye is .02-.03 degrees, so its resolution at a meter is 350-500 microns.
