I just got a new phone that has a camera, and I'm sort of giddy that I was actually able to take a picture and e-mail it to myself. I made this and two others from foam egg-shapes from hobby lobby and parts from Starship Troopers warrior bugs along with some Tyranid heavy weapons that were hanging around.

Hmm... Maybe use some hot glue to give it some good texture. Other than that, methinks this thing is going to look right wicked on a battlefield

Good idea. I already have some textured paint to use on them. I haven't decided what broods/models I'm going to drop in them, so I don't know what I should use for openings.

Perhaps, and it would add interest to the middle, which is pretty barren.

I would try to get ahold of those wierd battle for macragge "anemone" bits and try to incorporate them into the design. Also, before you paint it I would go over all the foam parts with putty and try to blend it all together/make it look organic.

As for openings I would recommend ridges going down each side in between the legs a la Aliens facehugger eggs, that way you can use them for anything.

I use hot glue all the time and it works just fine. Try using a low-temp 'home arts & crafts' grade gun instead of one set to the temp of an industrial smelting furnace

Okay, here it is with some additional detail and an undercoat. I dug out some divots around the upper section and then glued them on inside-out to give the appearance of both exits and the stubs of appendages which were holding on the outer ablative layer of the pod, which could have also served as stabilizers for the final approach.

Cool work. You gonna add some plates to give it the tyrani feel.

Nope, I figure that sort of stuff would burn off upon entry, and this is the innards.

This is it, I have more of the claws, but I want to save them just in case I decide to go spore-crazy.

One spore done, two (So far) to go. The green/blue is going to be the color scheme for my 'nids whenever I get around to starting the actual army. The red is the exposed flesh that was under the ablative shell. The black is visual shorthand for the openings that the creatures will use to swamp the enemy. I'm thinking 3x20 Termagants with devourers. If that's not enough Dakka, I don't know what is!!!

Hmm... The "Exposed Flesh" idea is neat, but... Look at burn victims. Well... Okay - don't. Because it looks gross. But you get what I mean, right? Their skin is never totally burnt off. You should leave some flaps of charred flesh and the blackened remnants of some plates on the bottom. Right now the burn just looks too clean to be natural. Still, this thing has turned out quite nice

I don't like the gun, but otherwise it's good. The gun just looks too tacked on, not really integrated into the fig. I picture Spore Pod weapons being more like the Ravener's, where it's just an opening, and not a full gun barrel sticking out.

To answer both comments, I made the choices I did because I wanted to avoid doing any more sculpting than was absolutely necessary.

But then how do you callenge yourself?
Besides, skin and whatnot is easy. Just get some GS, stretch it real thin, then apply it and add rips and tears. Cah'mahn. Add some grossness

I will stare at pictures of various models or sprue pics if I can get them, just looking for ways that things could go together. This is necessary, since it's harder to get bits and I don't have the money to buy an entire boxed set just for a few bits. However, I do definitely have a few ideas for building creatures that are not in the codex. Stay tuned.

I hear ya on the kitbash. I'm getting fairly good at the sculpting, but it's still a pain to work up the motivation to do it. I always look first at what parts I can glue together to get the desired effect, or if I can simply carve it out of a chunk of plasticard.
