Request: Have any of you suggestion on how to convert 36 grots and 6 slugger orks? They are plastic clones from an earlier edition box set circa 1995, identically cast and identically posed; they're very boring looking. I thought to convert one or two of the orks into runtherds with some left over bitz from a more recent grot box, but otherwise haven't many ideas.

Situation: My longtime buddy sent me by post a smallish horde of Warhammer Fantasy odds-and-ends because he heard I was back in the hobby. He stashed away a lot of stuff back when we went college; that was fifteen years ago: I'd even forgotten we had bought this 40K plastic all that time ago, and now I'm playing Space Orks. A week before this package arrived, I had purchased the newer gretchen set: very nice, much nicer than this clone stuff. But it seems like a waste not to try to do something with the old stuff. If I do, I could field 46 grots; not bad.

Any suggestions?

Crickey thats a tough one. I'd say that for runtherds, off with their heads and throw some new ones on. The new plastic kits have loads of bitz and odd ends, or a head from that smallish horde of fantasy odds and ends ought to do. Repositioning the axe arm might be possible- I haven't done to much of cutting off arms and readjusting them/greenstuffing them for a new angle, but the axe has got to go in favour of a whip or grabbin' stikk etc. The pistol shouldn't be to hard to chop the arm at the elbow and file it a bit so arm is pointing down a bit more- you could get a herder with his pistol down instead of stuck at a 45 degree angle and his whip going out so he doesn't look like hes just standing there for parade

Those grots though... all i can say is good luck!

Don't you dare defile such an epic sight with your conversion tomfoolery!

Nah only joking, I have these grots too, if I recall the box came with 40 of the buggers with another 20 orks and a cardboard deffdread! I still use the orks as-is for old times sake, and have even bought a old-style nob to lead them from ebay.

My suggestion (and the only thing I can think of) is either play them as is for nostaligia (there's not much of a difference height wise between these and new grots for TLoS nazis) or start swapping heads as the easiest conversions, if you feel like dabbling in other conversions try carefully shaving off the guns and replacing them with more orky substitutes.

EDIT: Curse you JiHallah! beaten to first post while writing this post!

I've got about 150 of the little guys. I've done up one runtherd to look like a Commissar, so I figure they will look great in ordered ranks, marching up the battlefield in uniforms. I'll probably do a few more runtherds in various imperial garb to add to them.

The 6 slugga boys... Honestly, I don't think they would look bad just painted up a bit different from each other but still matching with the rest of your army and tossed into a few different units. I've got 20 or so. Some I'll be changing out weapons, but honestly if you have a decent sized army of Orks, they shouldn't look too out of place.

Someone has a beautiful Bad Moons army with an entire unit made up of them. They look great with the rest of the army.

That's a really good idea, actually. I think the best you can do in this case is to embrace their consistency and theme them like that, some kind of special structured troop.
