Love the Boss, I would like to know how you did the checker patterns so cleanly.

Freehand, i first layout a grid with a dark grey, then i fill in every other square, and hightlight as normal. So you would go from that dark grey up to a white. Then with black go through and touch up anything that came back over. The key is to highlight the same corner of every box so that there is almost a light reflection, that way there will be a pop and brightness for the end result.

Squig-theme thief! (check out nobz in my gallery for proof)

Based mine on the strawberry tree frog, looks almost identical.

Seriously though, your's is a lot better painted than mine, excellent blending. Also your bare metal is looking sweet.

Yea, the idea with the squig was an almost chameleon look. I wanted to keep the color pallet very neutral to unify everything and have the squig a bright color for contrast.

Here it is almost completed, minor changes may be made and final touching up will be done, especially on the base.

Great job - I love the gums oddly enough - just a great transition from the red to green there.

My only critique is that the base blends in with the pants - but I suspect you just haven't gotten that far yet.

Kudos.

The base looks great and the model is coming out nicely...I really like how the horns came out....I always find them annoying to paint

And yes....Flash mode on a camera is a big no no .....as you said it really ruins the over all look of the miniature....I use three lamps to take my pics and all of them are natural light bulb...if you don't have such setup you can always resort in placing your model next to a window during the day.

Im going to add some greys into the base so that it pops more, plus im going to weather the barrel more. Im noticing many things i need to touch up now, the streamers on the boss pole for one, and i think something needs to happen with my metallics, idk what but they just arent cutting it.

Here it is with the grey, and could someone help me please, and tell me if there is something wrong with my metals, i just dont know.

And i just want to know if the grey+the brown are a good combination, dont worry about neatness just yet, colorwashes will be added.

the metal is way too clean. Orks don't give a damn about hygiene and a warboss's helmet will undoubtedly be beaten up and rusty. Add some scrathes into it, and dirt and rust and you'll be good to go! Good luck!

I attempted that i just dont want to overpower the color with washes and too much of the rusty scratches because it is incredibly easy to make those look cartoonish or unrealistic.

Some more updates. I used some blues, greens, browns, and soon maybe reds and oranges on the metals, let me know how its looking.

Firstly, very nice skin tone, it makes the model stand out. Secondly, that Squig is very well done.

Thanks man, i really like to throw in more colors for ork skin, it really brings a realism. The only thing i cannot get satisfied with is the metal...i dont know what it is i just cant get it right.

Thats what i was thinking, you think maybe a deep orange or red would give it a good look? I want to try it but the mini is too far into process to do any experimenting.

How about taking a sprue, prime it and experiment on that?

Whoa, that's REALLY good!

Very nice blends! I do have a critique though, right now he is lacking in contrast a bit, except for the squig. The squig is the focal point of the model right now because of the color intensity vs the rest, I feel like you should paint the helmet red, yellow or black in order to bring attention back to the face. The horns could also do with a few more steps at the base to darken them, again to add some more interest to the head area. The base, same deal, very tonally close to the ork's clothing.

That may seem like a long list, but honestly it is extremely well done, just bring up the saturation and a little texture in some areas will make it 'pop' and turn it into a full blown masterpiece!

I didnt really think about adding color to the helmet, that would also probably alleviate much of my anxiety about the metal not looking good enough.

Overall I think it looks great

I do agree with the comments regarding the helmit looking far too clean, but would just go for a darker metal tone than actually colouring it.

Would love to see photo's under better lighting as it looks like your flash is obsuring some of the detail.

Unless you are entering this into any painting comps, suggest you get on with the rest of your army - you can always come back to the boss

Yea but thats my problem, im starting up a small ork army for scenarios and what not, but he is my centerpiece to my army so i have this desire to make him perfect and that is my problem.

You could blend the colours on the squig a bit more, right now it's to much kontrast between them imho.

Looking great otherwise.

You could also mute the colors of the squig and yellow fist. The 2 highest saturation points of the model by far are extended far away from the primary character, the more I look at it, the more convinced I am that that is the main issue.

If you look at this pic, where the squig and fist are cropped out, the model is much more in harmony with itself. Do you guys see what I mean?

Yea, the body does fit itself, but i wanted the extreme contrast from the squig, i have added some red into the helmet and stomach armor just for unification, i will post updates as soon as i touch some things up that i keep spotting, plus the boss pole wont be going back on the model so no yellow will be added, or should i make the red yellow, and not red at all....hmmm
