Disbeliever of the Greater Good

This is a scratchbuilt scenery project I've been working on the last month.
Step 1: Create a template of all the major shapes of a Rhino. Luckily they look a bit like sloped shoeboxes, so it's not as hard as you might think. I made this from a few nicely angled reference pictures and my knowledge of the size of Space Marines. No actual Rhino was used.
Step 2: Transfer these shapes onto 3mm cardboard and cut them out. This step takes a strong arm and some time.
Step 3: Assemble the pieces with copious amounts of PVA glue.
Step 4: Now comes the daring step. Take a saw and cut the model in half at an angle. I used a medium-size metal saw to have better control over the cutting angle.
Step 5: Turn the Rhino pieces cut-side down and marvel at the dramatic terrain piece. Next step is to add a base so they can't tip over during play.
Step 6: Add details like doors, hatches, reinforced armour plates and guns if you want. The exhaust chimneys are made out of thin card.
Step 7: After some more detailing came the time to start painting the models. This week I finished the Rhino graveyard. Here are some pictures of the result. I'm quite pleased with the result and hope to make many more in the future.

Very very good peices of terrain and much cheaper than using a rhino.

Nice idea.Saves buying real rhinos or prefabricated Forgeworld scenery. They look good. I have to agree with cakefool though, the wrecks need evidence of enemy action. Or do they? hmm, depends where in the warp you are.....

This is freakin awesome, bucket! I would love to get the particulars from you, like the templates you used and what kind of materials were used. Edit: I really need to learn how to read before I go straight to the pictures. Great work man, I may need to go find templates of my own to try this!

Cool idea.
My one complaint: they look like they rolled off the assembly line and then somehow got buried instantly.
They need some wear and tear and grime applied to them: rust, dirt, soot, bullet/shell impact marks, etc., etc.

Bad day for the Ultramarines eh?
these look great, too good though. They don't really look like they are battle damaged, but merely like they were left for about 100 years and nature reclaimed them (evil trees that saw tanks in half!!).
Try adding some gaping holes/exposed wires/you know the drill...

Any chance of getting you to make a us a copy of that template? Would be awsome to have like half a rhino burried in the rubble of a destoryed building or something.

Almost the first thing he said was he created a template, not found one. If y'all need templates try the Golden Bolter Paperhammer site, near the bottom, There are templates for damn near everything, including a really good MkII Rhino.

Not a big fan of the "nose up" and "tail up" pieces (I'd find those pretty hard to explain being sunk into the ground), but the rest are excellent indeed.
I do agree, however, that weathering and damage are needed to finish the look in general. Even so, that one aesthetic point doesn't detract from your inspiring work. Any more such projects in the pipeline ?

Nicely done! I doubly like the fact that they're made of board, instead of actual models. Scenery on the cheap is always good.
I might have to attempt to replicate that.

Awesome job! I was a little skeptical when you were just doing mock-ups of the rhinos, but when they are all painted they look amazing! Very realistic terrain type too.
Just finished reading a book, "Patton's Photographs". Which are all from his personal camera and he has a lot of pictures of burnt out tank wreaks.
