So, what would you say to be the best troops choice in the 40K universe (game terms)?

I've included a poll of the likely candidates so please vote and voice your opinion of why you voted for whomever, thanks.

(this will be regarding standard troop choices, not units that are made a troops choice through special characters, eg. Sternguard/Pedro)

Personally, I'm torn between Grey Hunters and Dire Avengers, but (likely due to bias also) I'm gonna have to opt for Grey Hunters due to being tough, possessing formidable close quarters firepower, capable of possessing specialised weaponry that - unlike tactical squads - would all work within the same range of their boltguns and also upgrades such as MotW to help them in close combat. thoughts?

Grey Hunters. I mean what can't these guys do? And for less points than their SM counter-parts.

-Any terrain containing Sly Marbo is dangerous terrain.
-Sly Marbo once played an objective mission just to see what it was like to not meet every victory condition on his own.
-Sly Marbo bought a third edition rulebook just to play meat grinder as the attacker.
-Marbo doesn't need an Eldar farseer as an ally; his enemies are already doomed
-Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain
-Sly Marbo still attacks the front armor value in assault, for pity's sake.

Plagues and SW were on the top of my list, but I have to hand it to the Plagues, they have never let me down.

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

You forgot battle sisters. They've got my vote, for being cheap (in pts obviously ), good quality, tough troops.

Yeah, Plague Marines almost had my vote aswell, but then there's their points cost, giving Space Wolves the edge IMHO.

and yeah, battle sisters have been added...

I didn't think anyone would give them the chance, afterall aren't they trumped by tactical squads and grey hunters?

Still early in the poll, but I expected a bit more love for da ladz. Lots of solid troops choices, but how would each fare against the 2-3 ork boys you get for the same price?

Grey Hunters, easily IMO. I think Berserkers or even basic Chaos Space Marines are arguably better than Plague Marines, but whatever.

Point-for-point, Bloodletters are very impressive. Fearless, invulnerable saves, S5 and I5 on the charge with power weapons and a higher WS than anything but Genestealers...

Grey Knights deserve an honourable mention for having the highest strength (S6) of any troop choice in the game as well as Storm Bolters, True Grit and the ability to counter any Psyker attack and having Shrouding.

Were it not for the fact that there are only five metal models and they cost too much (points and pounds) they'd be my winners.

Dire avengers aren't necessarily overpriced, but they're not great against marines (i.e. most players) they can't get any weapons to help wound high-toughness or FNP units, or any anti-vehicle weapons, which are the #1 criteria for success these days.

So, I vote for plague marines, they always give me trouble when I play them.

Hell, it's good to see everything has got a vote.

I'm surprised that Tervigons, Veterans and Assault Squads aren't getting more love tbh, but I agree with Grey Hunters and Plague Marines being the front runners...

I am personally a Tactical fan, for two reasons - they are pretty nasty buggers in combat, and they don't look like fething space vikings (Spehss Puppiez).
