I have alot of time these days, so I started working on some simple scratch builds that would not upset anyone if they looked like crap. This is what I got so far. Kind of shady pics, not to show all messy details. Just the concept so far, but basicly ready to drop!
My thought was from the beginning that a DP scratch should be like an sturdy iron cage containing some marines; and I found at work some plastic frames for small gas tubes, and knew those would be a good thing to work on.
What do you think so far?
(sorry about the last pic its very bad quality, but I put it there for size comparison)

Where'd you get the parts and/or what are they made from? These look really nice and with a little extra work could show up in my CFists army...

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money
"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

They're rather funky, in a tin kan sort of way. I like them, they look like refitted industrial equipment.

Well, the parts are, as I mentioned, a plastic frame/holder for small gas tubes (thats the outer frame). The rest is a cut up plastic desk shelf for loose papers, glued around a hard paper cylinder (any can would do). The top is lids from instant coffe jars, crowned with some little odd mtor device I have no Ide how they ended up in my bits box. Sorry this is not much help for reproducing, Im afraid. As I wrote, a very scratch built pod
Edit: Oh and the wings are also from the plastic desk shelf, and an attempt to tie it a little to the GW design...well.

Never seen / knew about a pre-heresey pod, but these would work well for em lol, look nice and clunky like all old marine tech.
I say make more of em, actually like these more than the basic ones (kinda like i prefer the pre-heresey jump packs)

They are nice in a way many of you have pointed out already: they look kind of industrial an can make do as scenery or factorial objective markers if you dont like them as pods
I think they ought to pe pretty "clanky danky" if you want to drop them from above
Thanks for the comments all.

Ok, if you would like to make them your self, its not so hard, and you can probably make it look much better if you use GS and regular plasticard. This was built on a no cash basis, all is stuff/junk I had at home.
Anyway, the only tricky part is getting the outer frame (shown separatley on the third picture). Its a one piece plastic frame that I just added the fins to. Its basicly just two circular parts (one with a slightly smaller diameter) with 4 posts holding them together. For a handy moddeler it should not be to hard to make.
The inside "can" is made by a long plastic rectangle (about 11*2" or 28* 7cm) with a row of 12 rectangular windows cut out. Two opposite windows were made about twice the size of the others by cutting the plastic between two windows; and the windows next to the larger ones were covered with large panels. So remaining is 4 smaller windows an two large doors. All this is just personal taste and you make it as you like.
This rectangle was carefully bent to be able to wrap around a hard paper cylinder. In fact, I cut it in half to make it easier to bend and fit, and still messed up alot. Then glue it fast to the paper cylinder (or a large can/ pipe if you like; it should be little more than 3" or 8cm in diameter).
finally add a suitable top lid with some crude device to crown it. My own tops lock horrible if you look down at it, so Im remaking that soon. Preferably you dont use a straight flat lid, to make it look less like a can
The size of the whole thing is: height 6,5" or 17cm. and the base diameter is about 4" or 10cm. I dont know what exact size the GW version is.
Dont know if this actually gave you more info than the pics could
Edit: here is the pattern for the can´s panel. just make two of these in proper size and plasticard, bend, and glue them to a proper cylinder.

I know this is an old thread, but these look awesome. I'm gonna try to steal the idea for my orks! Now I'm on the hunt for the outer frame bits.
Really nice.

I guess I'll be the odd one out here.
I don't really like these as drop pods as I imagine them going through a atmosphere and burning up with all inside.
There should be (imo) some degree of aerodynamics aside from the two fins. Regular drop pods may not be that much better but they still remind me of of a RPG round as well as a noticeable heat shield on the bottom.
Perhaps adding the same sort of shield on the bottom (that's smaller in diameter then the pod is to stand out) and having all 4 fins on would help.

I like the look of them. I think they would suit representing something that drills its way up from underground better. Add a big drill on top and your good to go
Plus you earn bonus points for reminding me of this childhood gem.
