Feasting on the souls of unworthy opponents

Hey folks!

I play Orks and Dark Eldar (and have about 7k points of disused Tau). I have everything except for Forge World models for both, and I have both no need for further models of either, and no wish to play a third army.

I've been running into problems when I go to tournaments with prize support. When I win stuff, I feel like there's nothing to get. In the ideal situation, I would get store credit that I could spend in the future, but realistically I travel across the country for events where that wouldn't be feasible, and even the semi-local stuff doesn't give store credit.

The last few tournaments I went to:
1. ('Ard Boyz) - the store made me pick something $60 or less on the spot. I got a battlewagon and am giving it to a friend.
2. At a tournament today, I won a GW "Fast Attack" carrying case. I have two GW large cases I don't use, a PACK1520 from Battlefoam and credit for a free second one.....so I gave it to one of the players there.
3. At a recent event, I got a $100 gift certificate, but it had to be spent by the end of the day (and the tournament ended at like 8:00) so I sold it to someone else for $80.
4. At an RTT last month, I won Calidan(??) IG Battleforce Box....I don't play IG, no one at the store wanted to buy it...so I gave it away.
5. At a GT that I flew to with luggage costing $25 per bag I won a Battlefoam X-Board, a Stompa and a Chimera. I gave away the Chimera to a friend there (I don't play IG) gave the Stompa to another friend (I already have frikkin' three that were also store prizes for other events and I haven't even assembled any of them), kept the X-Board....and the plaque was actually the best part of my prize packet.
-------------------------------------------

It frustrates me that I pay to enter a tournament, and there's nothing to look forward to for prizes; I've got to be missing something. At this point I'm just playing for prestige, so I'm not worried about fleshing out my armies (most of my DE and half the Orks were acquired through tournament winnings), but there's got to be something worth focusing on when I do win something.

So two questions:
1. What do you do with the random 40k stuff you win that you have no use for? I'm not trying to make an e-bay account to sell stuff on there, so please don't suggest that.
2. If you were in my shoes with two armies (and a third you don't play) and no interest in another army....what would you do when you DO get store credit? I got a planetstrike book as part of my winnings a while ago, but have never even played a game with it, making Kill Teams or whatever and Spearhead unlikely useful acquisitions. Sometimes I get paint or stuff, but what would you focus on? When I win I don't want to leave with nothing, but I also want to get something useful...

Advice would be welcome.

Well, if you aren't wanting to build a new army or flesh out your current ones, models are pretty out of the question honestly.

At that point, if I don't need any models, I tend to stock up on the various hobby supplies I need or that I don't like to purchase as they're a bit overpriced (tool sets, etc). Another option along the same lines is to pick up models you don't need for an army, but have lots of nice bits to use for conversions (empire flagellants I've gotten for IG conversion bits).

Or, a totally new game, whether its a CCG or a board game you've never played and wouldn't mind trying out with some friends.

So:

-Hobby supplies, tools, paints
-Model kits to use for conversions/bits
-New game/ccg/board games you want to try

Edit: most of this assumes the store you're at is willing to let you trade whatever box set you won in for credit to use on something else. If they aren't and you're forced to get a specific item they choose theres obviously nothing you can do with it other than:

-use it for bits
-give it away
-sell it (ebay)
-use it as bartertown trade material

Use all your credit and get popular units/kits.

Start a trade thread here on Dakka and hopefully someone will want it.

I always just start in on another army, personally.

I've got DE, Orks, Wolves, Raven Guard, Necrons, and am currently working on Eldar.

Hmmm, though now that I think about it the 'new army' concept does lead to problems of its own in due time...

If you legitimately don't want the items and have no desire to sell them via eBay then I would say the best option is either immediate sale to players present (at whatever discount may or may not be needed) or simply doing as you've been doing and giving them away for goodwill.

As you've said, you're playing for prestige - you could do just as well requesting that your prize support goes to whoever is the newest player present or something.

Most of my Tournament winnings have gone one of three ways:

Traded for stuff I actually want with fellow gamers

Was stuff I wanted for one of my armies

Still sitting in my build box in case I need it for conversions

I play in tournaments to test my skill, and to have 5 good games in 2 days.

I'd try to trade the stuff you don't want with local gamers, via the dakka swap shop, or just try & get some $ off ebay.

Also, seeing how you have 3 40k armies it might be time to take the plunge into Fantasy, once 8th edition comes out. This would give you a host of new things to get.

Another thing that I've done when faced with the "must use store credit today" is to buy scenery, Not only can it be used for display boards but it can also be used when gaming at home.

And if you want to play for both prestige and prizes start playing no limit hold em, no one I know of goes to 40k tournaments for the prizes (except 'ard boys).

A few of the stores around here do something really cool. If you give your prize support to one of the newbs that are trying to pick up the game, but obviously are struggling, or just taking their time, they will match what you give. So in essense the new player is getting your prize, plus another of the same amount. Your shop may not do that, but it would still be cool to do to help the new players out. It can be anonymous through the store, or you can give it yourself and show the other gamers that even the great players can be super nice guys.

Holy crap, good ideas.

1. Terrain: Never thought of that before. I'm got felt strips with some trees for most of my terrain at home.

2. Non 40k stuff: I hadn't thought of that either. I don't play Fantasy or Warmachine....because I don't know how to play either. And I haven't gotten into either because I don't know how to play them. Maybe I should look into one of them. Flames of War seems to be popular too? Not sure if that's just local, or if people play FoW all across the U.S.?

3. Give it to the newest player in the hobby: Totally awesome idea. Much better than "Who wants this?" and the first person to say "me" gets it.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

Since I have everything that I want, and have about 5 armies scattered about unassembled and unpainted I am in the same boat.

What I do it just grab the latest release and put it up on e-bay.

You can just get cool minis to paint or model...or ask your friends what armies they are working on and hook them up.

I used to win tons of credit playing 40k and have ended up getting fantasy, at-43 and warmachine armies pretty much for free over the years.

Dash-

You do have a unique position relative to normal gaming people (i.e. people like me ). The normal player who may win once in a while, may have little time to go to tourneys and/or does not have the experience or skill to win consistently would glady take a prize and would love to spend that money to enhance that army or fund a future project.

While I will not advance the idea you are a lucky person Dash as your winnings come from your time, devotion, and skill, I would do what you believe is best for what you have rightly won.

If you have compassion for people, pass those prizes to those who need it. Do not do it every time though as you do not want people to expect charity without improving themselves.

If you value materialistic goods or need money (which I believe you do not since you have maximized your 2 armies, consistently travel around the country to play Warhammer 40k, and seem to have a comfortable job and supporting wife with no monetary needs herself) selling these models and or prizes would be for your benefit alone. If you wish to help others, you can offer these at discount.

If you wish to fuel the compeititive side of your personality (and judging by your dedication and impressive number of games you have played), how about turning those prizes from those stores into online tourneys for people on Vassal. Since you and Gwar and a few others are advocates of playing on Vassal, how about drumming up support of such a venture by using your winnings to host online Vassal games with tangible rewards.

I would also consider the prestige side as well: I have already posed the question of what would you do if you actually do go "all the way," meaning you are the number one player in Warhammer 40k within your sphere and compeititon does not challenge you anymore with your two armies:

Why not master other armies? That prize money could fund an army that actually would pose a challenge for you to build and pilot. Prove people wrong that the new Tyranid codex could actually prove a challenge. Make an army of Blood Angels become the most sanguine instrument of destruction known to man.

Keep in mind though that I have never been in your position Dash. I don't play enough of any game to qualify for your position in Warhammer 40k. Ultimately the decision for what you want to do is largely up to you.

I would help others by helping to buy and construct and instruct others in how to make armies and make them compeitive and fun, or go the Vassal prize route.

Either way, the choice is yours alone to make.

Hmm,aside from getting a warhound titan?

But anyway, I'd just take the sets I don't particularly want and take them to a FLGS,let some people paint them, and have them on display. That way,you can benefit the community in some way,and have the personal satisfaction of having your models on display. Everyone wins! ^.^

One thing to consider doing is to use your winnings to collect a fun new army, and then host your own tournament at a gaming store where you provide the prize support.

Another is to ask the TO or store manager before if you can sell the store credit a little more discretely than simply shouting it out. they may not like the idea of a guy, especially out of towner, rolling in, winning, and not even caring about the prize.

There's nothing wrong with giving it to the second place finisher, the last place finisher, the new player, the young kid, or a friend.

Depending on what the FLGS stocks, there is:
other games (FoW, etc. or even stuff like Munchkin, Cheapass Games, Horus Heresy, board games, roleplaying games, etc.)
hobby supplies - paints, brushes, flock
black library books
latest codex
white dwarf
terrain
resin bases or GF9 magnetic bases and rebase an army

Another thing to consider is picking up a model you've always wanted to paint. Or even a model to replace one in your army that you'd like to paint again, but better.

The other possibility is to simply tell the TO that if you win, you want your prize to be divided up. Either among the other top finishers, to the best painted, whatever.

Why not start a "Dash winnings overflow sales thread" here on Dakka? It could help fund your travel/entry fees and be a cool way to pass on savings to dakkites (you spend plenty of time here) rather than some random dude.

Of course, you know, all the other people in the thread agreeing he's a nice guy and offering advice... and that he's given away SEVERAL tournaments worth of prizes to others rather than be selfish... that just reflects that he's HATED by the community, right?

Troll.

I can't add on to what other's have said here Dash, but unless you plan to get terrain or some nifty apocalypse stuff for yourself, giving it to the newest player will make their day and probably make them love the hobby forever. Seriously. If I had managed to get it in a tourney before I bought all my stuff, if someone had handed me a battleforce I would have felt like I was walking on clouds. I like that idea. Keep it up. Those 12-year olds turn into contributing citizens eventually.

The prize support for a Vassal Tourney would be fantastic, except for the issue of shipping; if someone from Germany wins a prize, do I shell out $100+ to send them a $50 prize?

*EDIT*

I'm really liking the "give it to the new guy" thing when I win something specific (like a Fast Attack Bag or a Stompa). I'm going to start poking around about Fantasy for when I do win straight up store credit.

@calltoarms: There are dumb people everywhere; the fact that there's a concentration where you come from that don't like me because of an incident that everyone outside of your area has read about and sided with me on....well, get over yourself. I'm not worried about a handful of folks who think I have bad rap.

1. Prepainted terrain - I've been filling out my collection in the basement so I have cool boards to play on. GF9 stuff is cool. Been also getting Pegasus Hobbies stuff.

2. Other games (ie: board games) - hell - they could make good Christmas or birthday presents.

3. Sell or trade for stuff. I typically just sell stuff at about 30% off to my friends or post it on the forums. I shy away from Ebay because it's just a waste of cash for me. Plus it saves time.

4. Black library or other books.

5. Clean out their fridge or snacks section. "I want $100 worth of candy bars" and just start handing them out to everyone.

6. In the years that we traveled a lot and won a ton of prize support, we sold a lot to pay for out next trip or at least help cover the costs. Lots of fun times were had. I had a lot of fun meeting up with several of the tournament regulars at the time.
