So, I want my necron army to look like they're all rusty, since they've been buried for a bazillion years. I did this test guy with a base coat of rustoleum red primer that comes out more like brown, then I splotched on random splotches and sloppy drybrushes of blood red, dark flesh, blazing orange and a little bubonic brown. Then washed heavily with badab black, then hit it withs some more splotches, then I drew on scratches with a silver Sharpie marker.

The bases are going to be square tiles on top of rounded bases, but for them I ordered a mold from Hirst Arts, they're the cracked egyptian floor tiles. I casted them in resin and painted this one with basecoat of desert yellow, devlan mud wash, and dheneb stone drybrush.

I'm trying to decide if I want to do anything with my pigment powders or if it's overkill at this point. Maybe I can save that for the bigger models like the destroyers or monoliths

Anyhoo, here's some test pics. wadaya think?

Looks nice; the rust could do with a more orange tint, but that may just be the pics.

They look good. I think to improve them you should add more silver chips, as it would just make it more easy to recognise as rust. The feet and head could use it most.

I think pigment powders would be too much (on any of the models) and would take away from the look.

yeah I'll add more chips and scratches next time. I have 3 more to paint, I just built 1 sprues worth so far but to start with I have a whole battleforce to do, then I plan to add 1 more box of warriors for 4 units of 10, a lord and a monolith and that should give me a good base to build the rest of the army off of. I also thought of just getting a 2nd battleforce and doing an all plastic army with my own conversions for flayed ones and immortals out of warriors.

I think for the blocks they stand on I'm gonna go with a lighter color maybe more like light gray.. so the model doesn't blend in as much.

Runnin up on ya.

Junkyard necrons. I like it!

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

Also thinking about doing a display board later on with those blocks, i'll just have to keep on casting them. I was thinking I'd set up the blocks on the board so there's missing blocks that I can just slide the figures into. Just not sure if the board would be really heavy since I'd probably do those blocks in plaster or hydrocal.

I wanted to do the blocks for the bases just because I have a pet peeve of hating it when the models feets are hanging over the sides of the base, they fit on the squares perfect and I figured for game issues, they're still gonna be on top of a round base.

Actually it's not a lot of work at all it took me about an hour to paint that one guy, plus waiting for the washes to dry. Should be pretty easy for assembly line painting

I'm in no rush though, the plan was to get started with the battleforce and wait around for the newer models to come out some day when the army is redone. For now it's something different to work on between other projects

Not really a fan of the overhanging basing, but it is done well.

The fig itself looks great.

Fine tip silver permanent markers are great for detail edging models btw and would work well on this necron scheme.

I use them on my orks as I find it faster and less prone to errors then using a brush/paint.

I think Necrons tend to look rather boring, you've done a great job of spicing them up. They look great!

Yep you mentioned that before so I stole your idea I didn't get the super fine point, but the sharpie still comes to a good point at the tip. I got a pack of 4 of the for like $2

The pipes? I painted the bumpy tubes with rotting flesh, then thraka green wash. The smooth tube I painted with gretchin green, thraka green wash, then a light drybrush of sunburst yellow The eyes were just 1 little dot of yellow

Love the base tiles, although i'd have been tempted to not glue them to bases (they look a little weird sitting on them). The guns look great how they are.
However, I'm not a fan of the rust. It's very red and I don't think i'd have assumed it was rust if not for your thread title.
I agree with the above about more orange - but disagree about the shiny silver paint chips.

You've already chipped them so much that it looks out of place, it looks like the paint is chipping off rather than the edges have had the rust scrapped away.

Excellent job! I see a fair amount of pretty decently painted necrons, but very few stand out as truly unique. Your rise to that standard. Please show more as you make them.

Looks really awesome, that rust effect looks realistic and gives the necron a more sinister look. Neat!

By the way, that basing is sort of huge... but I can imagine it looking really cool when the whole army will be like that. Except the fact that enemy models will look puny next to them

I've always fancied a Necron army myself and yours is very similar to how I imagine a Necron should look - All rusty and worn.
