Models for me everytime. I field models to my detriment just because I like them, win/lose rate is about 50-50 but who cares about winning when you see a lovely bunch of minis on the table?

As a *player* the only thing I care about are the rules. Pretty models are nice but in terms of what I'm there for- to have a contest of skill against another player- models are window dressing. It's nice if they're pretty but it won't get them into my list over something useful.

That said it doesn't mean I can't buy models just for the aesthetic, but as a player I separate want from need.

Rules can change overnight, models can't.

That being said, rules do play a part in which models I decide to buy. I wouldn't, however, buy models I disliked just for their rules.

To be fair to my post, the "all" I was talking about was good rules and good models.

Still, I do sympathize with you, my little monsters keep me busy all week. I'm lucky to find any time at all during the week for painting. I've even taken to making terrain (which I know I can do quickly) for friends in return for them painting basic line troops for KoW for me. That said, my club meets every other Thursday, and I rarely miss a meeting, so I'm at least getting my game time in.

Ha! I too have found it much easier to make terrain. You can be messier and you can find ways for the kids to help.

Rules are more important. If I don't like a model, I can just make a new one.

Since when are models tied to rules ?
If you like the way a unit works on the battle filed you can always proxy 'better looking' models.
How some thing looks is subjective.(You like what you like.)

Rules are supposed to be functional.A clear and concise instruction to play the game.

When rules become subjective like 40k rules have, things go down hill rapidly.

SM Centurions... I want them so very badly, infact I will probably get some anyway, but rule wise and pointwise I look the other way.

I've always love aesthetics over rules, for me the hobby is about the painting and building, and seeing them all lined up in their ranks of vivid perfection.

I agree with PrehistoricUFO, the fluff and hobbyist side of it is what makes it for me, i'm not to bothered losing most battles. I just tell myself that they look good and feel right, thats all that matters to me.

Give me a hundred Space Marines. Or failing that give me a thousand other troops.

Models before rules.

I'll happily have my models sit in my cupboard if I stop liking the rules for the game(s) they are from.

I'll happily use them in other rules also.

So why I'll happily play 40k with infinity models, or vice versa, I won't even think of trying to 40k up infinity rules. They don't work on that scale (unless you are playing RT).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).

I put rules before models.
Because I want to play the game, and I would use any model I prefer to represent the 'playing piece'.
I may have voted opposite to chromedog while totally agreeing with his P.O.V.(ooops!)

I do not think that rules should be that unbalanced that players are prevented from taking the units they like because they can not be an effective option in game.
And I do not think that players should be restricted to buying minatures from the company that they buy the rules from if they do not like the sculpt.

Models and fluff first! Then when i start playing games, then i might find myself adding new stuff based on rules over models and getting things i otherwise might not have. Then i fall in love with them, then its about the models again yay.

With the exception of 40k (which i have stopped playing), I tend to gravitate towards the really cool looking lines of models that tend to be hard to learn.

My first Crew in Malifaux was Collette/Showgirls
My first warband/army in Warmachine was Mercenaries (and is now, permanently Convergence)
I prefer Westerners in Hell Dorado

Almost all of my DnD characters have "nonstandard" weapons, etc.

I like a balance of the two. If the models are awesome I'll just get them and either use them as a counts as or a display piece. If the rules are good but the models suck I'll try to either improve the look of the model or find a suitable counts as. If the model is meh, like in the case of the Heldrake, it'll depend on it's rules. I'm going to pick up a few just because it is so good.

Definitely models over rules. After all, if I'm going to spend hard earned money on a model, and then take several/many hours to paint it, I'd better like the looks of it.

It has only happened a small handful of times where I wanted to have a particular unit in my army, but really disliked the rules for it. In that case, I just converted another model to make my own version. Prime example here being the Obliterators, I despise the fleshy look of them, but I really wanted to try them out on the table. So I got myself some Chaos Terminators, added a bunch of weapons on their arms/top, gave them a regular CSM on the back (to demonstrate the extra power they need to use all of their weapons), did a few other minor conversions, and bam! I had myself some new Obliterators!

I would say that 66:33 models before rules kind of guy. When I pick out an army to play, I usually do it for the look or fluff of the models not the rules. I then pick a theme on to based the army on which is mostly based on fluff and models (Like Worldeaters, Khornate Daemons, Warrior Nids) not necessarily based on what are the best rules. Then playing with the theme that i have picked, i choose the optimal load outs.

But i wouldn't fault anyone who picks rules of models

Hive Fleet Cerberus 2500pts
Blood Pact Traitor Guard - 500pts
